  1. I just recieved this in an email and thought it was kind of cool so I am passing it along to all of you. The Red Planet Never again in your lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular! This month and next month the Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August, Mars will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history. So mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grows progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share with your children and grandchildren. No one alive today will ever see this again.
  2. Good one Flex. Thanks Jim
  3. Thanks again to all who responded. This weekend I will take it down to the conversion plate. Wish me luck!
  4. Thank you for your reply Shred. Jim
  5. Duane, very good response I agree completely. I have not had nearly the impressive training that you have had but I believe that cross training makes a better product in what ever you do. Jim
  6. Sorry to hear that Erik, You know this is kind of the way I got started in USPSA though. I went to my local range (20 min drive) on a Saturday morning a little more than 2 years ago to site in my 30-06 hunting rifle. I like to get there about 30 minutes before you can start shooting so I can get set up. Low and behold the place was packed with a bunch of crazy gun nuts all decked out looking like they were going to war. I asked my friend the takes care of the range what the heck was going on with all these loco's on "my" rifle range. He laughed and said go down and watch you might like it. I no sooner got down there when someone, I did not know, offered me a gun and some ammo and tried to talk me into trying it out. Being a shy guy and not feeling comfortable with using a "strangers" gun I just watched. Since then I have been hooked. I guess what I am saying is maybe you should put on your cowboy boots and hat and pop some caps with the good old boys. Who knows maybe you will get hooked just like me. Jim
  7. I got an old RL 1050 last week that was packed with dust & old gun powder worked together with oil and/or grease. It is set up in 40 cal, which will work for now even thought I would like to reload 223 with it as well. I could not stand to just start loading with it because it was so dirty (and I just have to know how things work) . I have started to clean it by pulling off the powder funnel and removing the dies. I down-loaded the 1050 manual so I have the step by step procedure. Are there any do's or don’ts? Any tips or tricks for cleaning? How far have you taken your 1050 apart? Jim
  8. titandriver... I think we have the victim. But I think it was too large for this page. Help Mr. Wizard! How do I shrink this Master Blaster Jim
  9. I do the same as you do. Inner/Otter belt, empty magazines in the proper places, holster and last but not least the blaster. Oh yes, seeing that I am half blind I always have my eye protection on in one form or another. [Thread drift] What type of martial arts do you teach? We have owned a martial arts studio for about 8 years. Jim
  10. Sorry to hear about your loss Lynn, We lost one of our dogs a couple of weeks ago as well. Unfortunately the old girl had lost most of her hearing and could not get out from under my sons bronco fast enough. The good news is that there was quick. We are looking at Labs because of the short hair (we live in a grove that is full of stickers) and the nice attitude around the kids. It looks like EricW may lean towards them as well. When I was a young buck my best friend’s dad had an Australian shepherd and she was a great dog. I think that most breeds of dogs can be taught to be smart, loyal, and friendly pets. It has a great deal to do with the upbringing that you give them. Good luck and let us know what you end up with. Jim
  11. This is great stuff! Thanks, I have bid on the ebay SVI but only $50 "below reserve" we will see what happens. I'm still the high bidder. Jim
  12. I have been on the same squad as Mike twice and from personnel experience I can say that he is a great person that loves our sport. I believe he has the right spirit that will help our sport grow. I do not know the other person that is running against him so I cannot speak for their qualifications or sprit. Jim
  13. Dragonfly Killer! Remind me never to bug you... Jim
  14. I hate changing jobs AGAIN! I hate driving 120 miles a day round trip to work worse. Jim
  15. I just went to the Western Arms website. A lot of the cool SV guns were either out of stock or sold out. They do take reservations for the new ones they are making. Are the barrels rifled or smooth? Thanks to all of you for your input.
  16. PistolPete, I have not tried the 1911 airsoft but the Glock 23 airsoft is very close to the same feel as a real Glock. My sons got the upgrade for me which includes a steel slide and what looks like a brass barrel. The slide functions the same as a real gun (green gas model) and the sound is like an air powered BB gun. They make spring models that you have to cock every time you want to shoot. They also have battery models for rifles and shotguns. Jim
  17. I too like stainless. I just ordered a SVI SS that should be done in about 4 to 5 months. I own a Kimber SS that I have shot for the last few years and it has functioned flawlessly. Jim
  18. Well they legal here in Kalif. But I told my sons we needed to look into the CCW laws if we wanted to play war games in the yard. Illegal in NL
  19. Thank you all for your responses. I agree about the trigger on the airsoft being better than the stock Glock trigger. Once I get a digital camera I will post the pictures of the targets that I built. Jim
  20. Mine would be "Poncho Mission". I don't think that would get me a date. Jim
  21. cpty, Thanks for the responce. Our range is about 30 min. away from our house and you cannot shoot where I live so that is why I am getting so extravagant with my setups. Just another way to have some shooting fun when I can't get to the range.
