UFC 66 Liddell Vs Ortiz 2

Couldn't take him down the first time, got cocky, got TKO'd.

Have to go with the Iceman on this one. His takedown defense is great and I think everyone underestimates him on the ground since he does not go there often.

But, if Tito can get him down and get a dominate position, it could be a surprising night.

Ought to be a great fight either way.

Did you catch the knee to the head last week? BANG! I was pulling for Diego, but I thought Riggs would take him to the end.

I'm no MMA expert, but Randy had trouble keeping Chuck on the mat, and he is easily twice the grappler Tito is. He actually spanked Tito when they fought, stacked him up near the fence over and over.

I think Randy had a fair shot of beating Chuck but he had the WRONG game plan...

I don't know who to cheer for, I guess I'll cheer for a good fight.

Wow, your the first one to mention that Randy had the WRONG game plan. So did Babalu. You gotta break Chucks timing and neither did that, they just ran into the fists. Tito can do stand up......

Well, when I was a pool player I learned (yes, the hard way) that a good game MAKER can often trap a good game PLAYER. Not that it translates directly, but I think at that level you need to find a game plan for each particular opponent, using your strengths against any chink in his armor.

My roomate from ERAU is a "Viper" jock (F-16 pilot and Red Flag instructor) and he'll cite you plane for plane how best to match up and what to avoid.

Since we are talking, and it's easy to Monday morning these things, but I think Randy should have made Chuck come to him and practiced shooting for the takedown as a counter to Chuck moving in to jab. He looked good and patient in II and like he was just rushing things in III. I heard somewhere in a fight conversation that you "never chase power". I think that's what they meant.

Did Tito learn or will he try his same old game plan?

We'll see...

Chuck has the best takedown Defense in the his weight class (probably in the UFC). Randy had one of the best takedown/ ground control games... Randy could not get Chuck on his back long enough to hurt him.

Tito is a ground and pound specialist... his strengths are neutralized by Icemans takedown defense.

I give Chuck a 2 to 1 advantage... Tito is no chump, and in most fights he is definitely at an advantage, but in this matchup, Iceman has the upper hand.

Tito can do stand up......

I saw the Ortiz vs Griffin fight the other day. I came in about half way through the second round. For the rest of the second and also the third round, it looked to me like Griffin kicked Tito's butt. Tito was getting smacked around on the stand-up and he only managed to get Forrest on the mat once...then didn't do anything with that.

Tito got the split decision...which made me wonder what I missed in the first half of the fight.

Tito will need a better game than what I saw at the Griffin fight.

Here is the UFC 66 Press Conference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-5R0UBKuw0

Watch Chuck (in the background) while Tito talks.

I agree about Tito's stand up. He doesn't have any against folks who aren't fighting long past retirement age...

He'll stand with Chuck for a minute or so, Chuck will go after him with combinations, Tito will cover up like he did the first fight, finally Tito will discover once again that Chuck's combinations will never stop until he finds a hole and knocks Tito out. UFC really needs some decent light heavyweights to at least threaten Chuck. He's definitely beatable, just not by anybody in the UFC now.

I predict a repeat of the first fight, hopefully more bloody as I don't like Tito at all.

I don't know how much Tito's pre-fight injury screwed him up in the Griffin fight, but Tito "should" have slaughtered Griffin the same way Griffin should have slaughtered Bonner.

Of course my GSP/Hughes prediction was slightly off the mark, but who would have thought Matt would abandon what works for him in favor of a stand up fight that is so-so at best. He should have saved that for the Ultimate Fighter winner. I'll try again with the rematch which Hughes will win, then the re-rematch where Hughes will win again.

I'm still feeling sympathy pain for Franklin :( He really took a beating. Both "winners" of the Ultimate Fighter are going to have an unpleasant experience, but Anderson Silva will likely kill the poor middleweight winner.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I suck at picking championship fights. I think I'm like 1 & 4 picking fights on here. No, I will not bet on the next one so don't ask :P I really want to see the fight. I missed it Saturday night. I had planned on going to Hooters to watch it but was unable to make it.

Guess I'm a little late in this thread, Glad it's here, was wondering who won, I live out in the boonies and no way to watch it.. i'm too cheap to pay for it :)

Seeing Chuck's demeanor I totally expected him to come out winning. He's strong, patient and cunning, with about 5 years of karate competition it soon becomes pretty easy to pick the person with the right mindset. and who has the most fight in them, chuch is one who will never ever give up, Tito, well he just wants the glory and money, winning is not that important to him. It seems a difference in grit where one mans pride is controled only by him, (chuck) and the other has to put on a show for everyone around him (tito).

SM,

I came to the same conclusion. It was pretty apparent after watching that pre-fight press conference (I think I posted a link to that earlier?).

Chuck was ready to go right then. Tito was talking about it being time for him to win.

Chuck has one of the best sprawl and brawl techniques that i have ever seen but he can be comfy on his back also...so its a mixed feeling thing Tito has a chance but... Chuck is the MAN

I don't think Chuck has had to sprawl very many times. He skips the sprawl and goes straight to the brawl. Guys try to shoot in on him and catch a left with their tonsils. Good fight though. Too bad it got stopped.

Best fights of the night were 1) Leben going night night 2) Orlovsky reminding his opponent to always pay attention 3) Griffin crying after the Dean of Mean schooled him.

I need to go to Vegas.... to bad I don't gamble, I am like 6 for 6 for my UFC championship picks :P
