I wonder what the total % of Open shooters this year used 9x19mm.

How many of the top 20 (if any) used 9mm?

Who was the top 9mm finisher? (Yong, who I know was shooting 9mm finished 25th)

I'll fill these in as we go...

how many of those top 20 pay full price for their SC brass. if money wasn't an object i would be shooting 38sc as well. i switched to 9mm just because the brass is really cheap

Hey, the gun ran flawlessly (thanks JPL!). It isn't the gun's fault that I suck ...

I know for sure at least two people on that list pay full retail for their 38SC brass. I think it's one of those commitment things-- if you want to be at the top, you go with the best you can afford. It may also be these guys have been shooting quite a while and have stocks of brass and mags and guns in those calibers as well.

Most of them pay retail for their brass. A few get free bullets, a few get 1 or 2 free guns - or at least the frame. That's about it.

If you think even 3 ppl on that list can cover their expenses thru endorsements you'd be wrong. They teach 35 weekends a year or they build guns full time or they make good money at their day job and spend it on gear.

late add:

Unfortunately, the majority of what Eric said is true ... very sad but true.

what we really see in this info is that top shooters don't change their equipment or loads like they do their underwear. Good shooters don't look for the holy grail in a certain caliber or gun style or load. They get equipment that works for them and then work on their shooting skills. I think if asked, the top shooters have used what they have for long time. It works, so why change.

Looks like the old addage is true, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

When I first got into reloading I tried a TON of different bullets with a few different powders in the name of trying to build a better mouse trap *turned into reinventing the wheel though*. I did work up a new load that I hadn't seen anywhere else using Longshot powder and a 200 grain HP bullet in .45 ACP for pin shooting by doing so and that is now my standard load for that. I also have a load for Berry's Plated 185 HBRN that I use just for plinking using HP-38 and one that makes USPSA Major using Clays *both with the same bullet*. By the way, I THINK my 185 plinking load might make minor *I still need to chrono that load* but it runs a full weight 1911 slide without a hick up on about a 7 pound spring. Feels like you are shooting an air soft gun. lol

When I got into shooting .38 Super I took what I had learned over the years and worked up ONE load and that is all I shoot out of that gun. I see no need to have all these extra loads for a dedicated gun that is only used in one sport.

I will have to say that my playing around with loads for my .45 ACP did help me out a lot with picking a powder for my .38 Super. Because I was playing around so much with differing powder charges I notices a lack of preasure issues even with larger powder charges. Yeah there is a funky power curve but once I figured that out I worked up to a major load using a chrono and even though I could go a lot faster there wasn't a need to so I backed the charge down to about a 169-170 PF. As long as I have access to the 124 grain bullets I am using I see no need to ever change a thing on the gun, my loads or my loading press for a long time to come.

Then again shooting with a GM and a few Master shooters I take what they say to heart, after all it has gotten them to where they are now right?

Primarily we're talking about the amount of gas produced to work the comp.

I think if 9mm was better the .38SC they would all jump on it.

I think if 9mm was even, there would be no motivation to change.

I think if 9mm generated less gas because of powder limitations in the smaller case, only the tragically hip would jump on it.

Having shot guns in both calibers... I'd say overall that its pretty washy... Its a matter of taste - how do you like the gun to feel and move. The 9mm guns seem to be a bit more sharp, to me (likely because of the standard practice of using a faster powder). I like the nice round, smooth feel the recoil impulse in my gun has (its not slow - but its not harsh, either). Some guys like sharp, quick impulse, some guys don't.

Unless something comes along that just offers too much advantage to pass up, I don't see that changing a whole lot...
