jimbullet
I have been contemplating on a new project. Given the limited availability of 40 cal single stack 1911s out there, I am thinking of building one. I have a Springfield Armory Loaded 1911 in 9mm. Would it be possible to convert this into a 40 cal? I would need to change the entire upper I would imagine, i.e. slide, barrel as well as the ejector. Is it possible? Cheers

revoman
Get a Delta Elite 10mm and have a 40 barrel fitted to it. It works great then you can switch back and forth.

I did the exact same thing when I had a .40 top end built to go on my 9mm Trojan. I had it done by a gunsmith and it ended up costing about 75% of what a new gun would cost. I had to do it tht way because the guns are no longer legal to purchase here in kali. For you, buying a second used gun probably makes more sense (unless you can do the work yourself). YMMV On mine, had to go with complete upper (slide/barrel assembly) but bottom end remains the same. Didn't need to change ejector or slide stop between calibers. Mrguns
Almost same set up i'm trying to build but in 45acp & 40 cal. Building two different upper same lower same mag.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: The problem with a 40 and 45 top ends is the barrel ramps. You will have to use a 45 ramped barrel in Wilson/Nowlin or Clark/Para so you can use the same in the 40 barrel. Thanks, Eric
ltdmstr
You really can't do 40 and 45 on the same lower because, unlike 9 and 40, the ejectors are different. If you want to switch ejectors every time you change calibers, that will work. But it's a bit of a chore, and beyond what most folks are willing (or able) to do. RIIID
It can be done with out having to switch out ejectors. The 40 ejector will work on the 45 case, there will be a gap around the ejector with the 45 slide. Rich
Mrguns
I'm using a para frame so both barrel are ramp. Gun is currently set as 45, I will find out soon if the 40 upper will work, if not I guess I just have to change the ejector when switching uppers. Aircooled6racer
Hello: What Rich said above. Check with Para they did have some slide setups for sale cheap a while ago. Thanks, Eric
ltdmstr
Most all the ejectors I've seen marked as .40 are really just 9/38s. If you can find one that gives you a safe margin from the primer, then you're fine.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: I know a couple of guys who have Para guns and switch top ends on there 40 and 45 pistols. They just slide right on with no fitting. I would still check with Para to see what top ends they still have. Thanks, Eric
Mrguns
tried my Para 40 slide last night on the 1911 frame with 45 ejector, it fit, a little tight but not binding, I will try it this weekend see how it goes.
