  1. I'll have to go back and re-read the rules. Is Trooper a stand alone like Tactical Irons or Tactical Optics, or is it like Junior, Senior, Lady etc? Is Trooper the new place to hide (for non .mil)?
  2. From last week: It was a cold one, but fun. BGSL in Wilmore. Steel12, loose brass and I are getting geared up for SS Nat's! Can't wait. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yqkNidjtps Stage 3: Head shot on swinger. Went for it and it paid off. 92% El Prez, will bump me to Master. 3. There is no place to put shooter classification on the application. Are we shooting heads up? That would ROCK!
  4. I like cheap too. Look on Armalites web site. They have blemish fiberglass tubes, rifle length, for $50. Excellent barrel nut, assembles exactly like a Knights FF rail HG. Not the lightest tube, but it's solid and mounts up nice. Can't beat the price. I think they are blems because they installed two pop rivets on the top instead of the bottom. I didn't care.
  5. If Jim would've lightened his longer tubes all the way out, I would have considered his. I zero'd the rifle yesterday. I had to shoot at the clubs 100y zero target to qualify to use the range. Best group was .85". I had difficulty "seeing" since it was a black 6" circle. I then put a (non black) target out to 200. First shot, nearly dead center. I had a couple zingers (one right, one left) but I backed up the fist bullseye hit with two more. The 3 shot cluster, 1st, 4th and 5th round, measured .685". Now to practice so I can eliminate the flyers. Or use match ammo. I was shooting Walmart bought Federal 55gr ball ammo. Overall I'm super happy with the sight and rifle set up. I'm no where near done. I'm going to swap the internals of the rear sight with NM guts so I can have the 1/4MOA windage clicks and I need to find my clicks for 300.
  6. I finally decided to build up one of my AR receivers I've had since the last election. Haven't own my own AR in a few years, I've been shooting FAL's only. I shopped for a barrel for a long while. Decided on a JP 20" medium contour. I didn't like the HUGE diameter from gas block forward so I had it turned down to .750" and blasted. Also turned it down so I could mount a gas block and JP globe sight at the Titan muzzle break. That set up was changed to a dedicated globe mount. JP sight and gas block will be in the BE classifieds soon. JP adj low-pro gas block is hiding under the FF tube. Tube started out as an Armalite fiberglass tube then I cobbled it together for a 15" tube. I have a 14" aluminum tube being made now, but the FG HG will work for a while. Everything else is pretty standard, A1 buttstock, pistol grip I had laying around, JP fire control srpings etc. JP light carrier and gas block were xmas gifts from the wife. Light buffer courtesy Steel1212. Awesome! I figured now that I had LASIK, I'd shoot Limited. Besides, I heard Brian45 was switching from HM too... First pic is with JP sight and original Armalite handguard. Both lasted one range trip. Nothing wrong with the sight, wanted to try this... Second pic is new sight mount with 22mm globe and long handguard.
  7. Communism, that was a good episode. Just watched it. One of my favorites was when they had a local tribesman fill in as the STIG. He had a loin cloth and white helmet.
  8. I've been looking for long handguards too. Some high power supply stores sell long aluminum tube HG's. Cheaper than the "tactical" options too.
  9. I DVR'd the show and haven't watched it yet, however Shummy had already been "revealed" as The Stig once before. Which was then later discounted as false. Can't wait to watch this one.
  10. Before I finally sold it, my SLP would not run anything but high brass ammo. The lightest load I could run was S&B, which was a midbrass round. Light piston, lube, storing with bolt locked back to "break in" the recoil spring, nothing worked to allow it to run field loads. Finally got tired of it and sold it. There is a sporting clays piston with an extra light spring. That was the only thing I didn't try before I got rid of it.
  11. Sharing: Just waiting for a Titan brake to finish it off. It'll be weird shooting such a small bullet though.
  12. ...and I just finished (mostly) my Limited rifle build. Nice.
  13. Last week I saw how STI got around broaching the trigger shoe slot. Came in from the top with an end mill (ick). Make sure your trigger doesn't stick in that slot. If you run a short trigger you may need to look at it.
  14. We know the frame can be done in a garage ("that guy" that makes his own). I know the grip can be done in aluminum. I'm not a machinist, yet I prototyped one on a 2 axis vert. mill. Not all that hard. STI frame and Al grip is over $700. To be a viable alternative to a standard frame kit the price would have to be the same as the standard kit. The added cost of the grip is the key. If you don't have a supply of grips, you can't be competitive. If anyone tried to buy grips for their own frames, watch how fast that source gets shut off by STI. If the patent is gone, there are other variables keeping others at bay.
  15. 1911 forged frame, about $150 2011 frame with grip, about $400 I bet the main reason the 1911 frames are so cheap by comparison, anybody can make them. I would love to see a 2011 style frame available for $200.
  16. Go-Pro. They have wide angle and standard. Comes with a "water proof" case which will reduce the blast noise. Head straps available too.
  17. The patent numbers on the grip itself aren't even for that part. IIRC. It would all too easy to undercut their price on the aluminum one that's for sure. That's a story for another thread however.
  18. Since I'm paying for the floater policy based on value, I set the price of my guns. They don't care whether it's 1000 or 10,000. I pay for the dollar amount of coverage. "What" is covered is really irrelevant to them. The more the gun costs, the higher the cost to insure it. It's still VERY cheap considering the items I have covered are one of kind and to replace them will be very expensive. They have full descriptions, serials, extra features, and of course I have pics to back it up. USAA, if you have a homeowners policy, is 10k of gun coverage. There is a deductable though. I only have items on my floater that are over 600 in value. Items under that fall into the standard policy.
  19. The further away from the pivot point (wrist) the higher the dot will rise and fall.
  20. I always enjoy watching him work. I guess it's because I'm like the Roy Underhill of gunsmithing.
  21. I have a floater on my homeowners for my guns. This was before my policy upped the standard gun coverage to 10k, before it was 2k. Didn't even cover one pistol. I left the guns on the floater since I can claim (pay for) whatever the replacement value is.
  22. Wow, great topic that has pretty much been beaten to death. Good read. I'll throw my name in the hat with the other instructors. With my security students, most are not shooters but are there to learn in accordance with the job standards. They sometimes NEED to see it done. I shoot it slow and focus on perfect technique. I've had to squeeze their triggers to prove it's not their sights, it's their trigger finger pulling shots. They hold the gun, I press the trigger. It really gets the point across. Same with some movement drills. They need to HEAR the gun going off to 'get it'.
