Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thanks for the kind words. Kydex is pretty fun to work with, good foam makes all the difference. The press is easy and cheap to build. I took this rig to the range today and it did very well. I had to use a crappy belt because I've lost some weight and my wilderness tactical doesn't fit anymore, so there was a little more slop in the hold than I'd there would have been. But overall, very smooth out of the holster and stable. Certainly worth a few hours work. Also, this 9mm springer RO is fantastic. I shall be buried with it someday.
  2. Well, I had some time this afternoon and slapped together a raven style rig. But rather than use standard belt loops, I built an intermediary piece which connects the holster to a blade tech belt loop, which I find pretty stable and easy to work with. This setup allows me to unscrew the attachment piece and go to belt loops or iwb if I wish. It also allowed me, most importantly, to let the pistol ride as low as possible in accordance with the rules I've read. Best part is I'm only out about five dollars in parts and a couple of hours of time, haha. A few cosmetic issues but acceptable for a 'prototype' Haha.
  3. Hello - I make my own kydex holster for personal use and family /friends. These are usually 'raven' style, but there are infinite possibilities with this stuff. I also just picked up a 9mm range officer for use in games (steel, uspsa, etc). For these types of games, what type of holster should I try to emulate? The blade tech type that rides lower? Stick with the raven /pancake breed? Thanks for any thoughts! Will
  4. Are you guys mostly running da/sa, or converting to sa only?
  5. Howdy folks - I've been eyeballing this model for a while, but I have no interest in a da/sa gun. Which leaves me with the safety / condition 1 system. So for those who have used this pistol, how feasible is this? How ergonomic is the safety in terms of easy off on the draw? Or is it asking too much of this design to run it as such? Thanks for any info- Will
  6. Existential funk mode: is a 9mm 1911 even even worthwhile endeavor if the goal is to get a game gun? Don't really even care which game, haha, but I HAVE to get started. I have put it off over and over because I don't feel I have the skills to be competitive, but I never will if I don't start. I want something cheap to feed and smooth to run, and want a 1911 platform because I feel I have better fundamentals with them. I do already own a g34 and mp9 pro that I could also also run with I suppose, if the 9mm 1911 is something of a pipe dream.
  7. Thank much to everyone for the helpful comments. I've got a lot to consider still. It's probably a comforting fact that all these options have a fair level of support. I only just became aware of this model. It seems like the price difference is pretty small to to get the magwell and mag release upgrade. I saw one in some classifieds with a few mags for 1200. I couldn't see that direct from Dawson included any mags, so seems like like a good deal. Too many choices!
  8. There's a Trojan floating around for $950, so it's sounding like a better deal, no?
  9. Also, this is less than encouraging : http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=202885
  10. I'm exhausted just reading that! You have the patience of a saint to have kept it through all that. Makes me strongly consider an sti instead of the RO I've been eyeballing.
  11. OPENB: it's awesome that that was your 666th post. So here's an evil congratulations haha
  12. Hmm, may have to reconsider my gut, haha. I suppose I could always sell it off easily if it doesn't work. I didn't have the patience to work with the ria frankly. It just couldn't get through half a mag without a jam. FTF and FTE. I imagine it needed better mags and a tuned extractor.
  13. Yup, another 'which if these' thread! I've seen some of these options discussed in other threads, but I've worn out Google and the search button looking for some consensus statements. I'm interest in a 9mm 1911. Having owned a rock island 9mm, which was an abysmal failure, I'm eager to not repeat the experience. I've read reviews on all of the above models, and it seems like the Trojan is king. It's also a bit above what I'd like to spend. I like the forged frame on the springer, but don't know what the expect in terms of trigger and reliability. The spartan is the most attractive price, but how reliable should I expect the internals to be? Right now I can grab a used Springfield RO for $700, and I just learned Shooters Connection is up the road from me, so a $750 spartan is easily obtainable. For someone just trying to become a better shooter, but not yet(!) doing competition, is the extra $500 on the Trojan worth it? That's a lot of ammo and training I could buy. My gut it steering me away from the springer, but I don't know why. Any thoughts are quite appreciated! Would love to get a reliable rig.
  14. Well thanks very much for the thoughts, folks. This was tough but I went with the poly since I couldn't find overwhelming evidence for the alum. Plus I spent the difference on an armorers block. Thanks much, Will let you know how it works.
