  1. Vihtavuori 3N38 is a suitable powder for loading the 38 Super to Major power factor. 3N37 and N350 have also been popular.
  2. The 38 Super has a semi-rimmed case. The SuperComp makes it a true rimless for improved feeding. The same dies for each of them as nobly the shell holder will change.
  3. Something of an oddball gun it would seem. I have both custom and stock guns, ands they all feed the H&G 68.
  4. Not all SWC's are created equal. However, it is my understanding that the H&H 68 SWC was designed to match the contact points of a 230gr RN. It has proven very reliable over the years. If a gun will not reliably feed a properly loaded H&G 68 SWC, I would consider having the gun fixed.
  5. Once upon a time there were single stack 30 round magazines available. Almost could be used as a monopod. I'd hate to think of working against that spring when loading it.
  6. 1.085" is the SAAMI minimum length for the 40 S&W per ANSI/SAAMI Z299.4-2015
  7. Working from (feeble) memory here, but I seem to recall our host, Brian, discussed several types of sight focus, including target focus in his book - and where they would generally be utilized. IU also seem to recall that the rules specify notch and post for iron sights.
  8. What is the bullet diameter? Do you know the bore diameter.\? Is that an expected velocity or a measured velocity? How much crimp?
  9. Likely the most common cause is low velocity, but over driving the bullet. bullet damage, wrong rifling twistor no (or too little rifling) can all be factors.
  10. I've long thought primers should have identifying markings. I tried to convince CCI while there, but there was no interest. It would seem great if SAAMI would organize and manage a primer ID system and have a chart to give the ID's.
  11. Pulling the primer back into the pocket is a known situation. Usually, rounding the decapping pin tip slightly can eliminate, or at least minimize, the problem.
  12. You mean I'm supposed to read the articles and not just look at the pictures??? But I would be surprised if his barrel looks different than the photo given.
  13. The last photo shows the feed ramp in the barrel extends such that you can see casing ahead of the extractor groove, meaning an unsupported area. You should not see any casing in front of the extractor groove to fully support the case during firing. If you put the blown case in the chamber you will find that the blow-out exactly matches the area unsupported.
  14. The blow-out in the case suggests it was not fully supported by the barrel. How about a photo of the barrel feed ramp area with a round in the chamber.?
  15. An hour or two should not present problems.
  16. How old are the springs? It seems many problems stem from the springs when they have been used quite a bit. I'd try a new spring before doing anything else.
  17. Was it with the same magazine each time? If the feed lips are releasing too easily the round may be popping up instead of feeding forward. Is the extractor tension as it should be? If the tension is too heavy it may contribute. Ammo OAL can play a part, but I prefer that the gun will work with factory ammunition, so if it's OAL, the gun may need some tuning.
  18. With lead 200gr bullets in 45's, I've seen numerous primer only squibs that left the bullet 2.5 - 4 inches down the bore. Great if the BIB prevents chambering another round, but many ringed barrels would seem to indicate it cannot be counted on. BIB = bullet in bore
  19. A squib can sound like a click. It sounds like there was a squib, likely leaving the bullet in the bore (BIB) and the second round was normal, but with two bullets, pressures soared and resulted in the damage you experienced. If the BIB was closed enough so that the new round bullet contacted it, there would be no ring in the barrel. If there was space, there should be a ring.
  20. I see that the NRA has cancelled the annual meeting that was coming in a couple of weeks. Home | NRA Annual Meeting (nraam.org)
  21. As I understand, then, you are trying to trim some 0.400" of case in one pass. That's a heavy cut Does it trim a 300 BO case without spinning? As an experiment, can you run a few 223 cases through a 300 BO sizing die (spindle removed) and then use a Dremel (or such) cut-off to cut them to about 0.050" above finished length, then run them through the Dillon?
  22. Tool(s) used? Procedure? Not much in your post to evaluate.
  23. Matches are not practice. Practice to build skills. Matches serve to test those skills. Matches have enough other presure to mask mistakes and do not allow analysis of any problems.
  24. Thanks. I'm not trying say it's right or wrong. But then the term "heads", meaning bullets, surprised and confused me the first time I encountered it. The narrow ogive sounds, in my terms as a long ogive with small meplat. One of the reasons t be here - to learn things,.
  25. Please educate me. What does "narrow ogive" mean? I'm good with ogive, and can picture a long ogive or short ogive, but narrow ogive escapes me. Thanks.
