  1. This, exactly. Having both been DQ'ed (when I knew I'd broken a rule and one time when I still believe I never did... but couldn't argue) and been the one DQ'ing, it sucks. It's no fun for ANYONE. NONE of us want to see someone stop shooting for a match. I will say that my local club(s) offer your next match free if you DQ but hang around to help tape with your squad, etc. after it happens (if you're a good sport about it, etc.). That'a a rather cool thing.
  2. The safety rules don't change depending on match level. As always, the name of the game is "cite the rule." If you can't cite the rule you'd DQ them under, it's not a DQ.
  3. Some kind of Keltec. I don't remember the specific model. New shooter, new gun, new holster.
  4. Thanks, I've only ever shot in SW Florida.
  5. In this case, he was choosing to use two hands to holster, which was putting him very close to sweeping, so we discussed "holster, seat mag, draw and deal with it then." As for other holsters, it wasn't for a common gun. Unless you had a generic Uncle Mike's, it probably wouldn't work.
  6. "well known" where? Anecdotal, but my 7 CO mags have lasted years with no issues... but I shoot on average a local a month.
  7. Question for the RO's out there: You have a new competitor with a new gun and new holster. The competitor has issues with the firearm retaining the magazine, typically falling out on draw, which he rectifies by reloading from his belt. You and the competitor determine that the holster in use is engaging the magazine release either on holstering or if they holster then ensure the magazine is seated, engages on their draw. They don't sweep themselves, but the change in holster/draw causes them to come closer to doing so several times. No rule is violated. The firearm itself isn't unsafe. It's simply poorly fitted equipment, and the only impediment is to the competitor's time. The rules allow for physically injured/disabled shooters to use a different start position with the imposition of a special penalty, but this isn't disability-related - purely equipment. Aside from talking to the competitor (who's now well aware of the issue and intends to fix it before the next match), what do you do? We opted to ensure the competitor knew of the issue, reminded him of the sweeping rules and penalty, and ensured he wasn't going to try to overcompensate for the problem by going faster than he safely could... but it felt awkward.
  8. Do tell! What went well? What did you learn you needed to work on at your first match? And the important question: Are you going back for more?
  9. Also: treat it like golf. Beat your own score every time. You'll soon find with practice you're beating more and more race guns in the process.
  10. Florida is big. Where in FL?
  11. No. I've got four (two on USPSA guns, two on SCSA guns (that see significantly lighter duty since they're frame-mounted). I've also got two other Vortex optics on carbines. I've had one problem and that was on a USED device I bought that they still covered.
  12. FWIW, I'm about to have a fun night at a match. Doing something silly because I can... and I've never practiced with it so it should be interesting to say the least... Dan Wesson 8" .357 (shooting .38 spl) for Steel Challenge. From a holster.
  13. Ask for a different sort order. When the scoring tablets follow the squad, a random sort stays the same stage to stage and is "equitable" vs name or number. Almost nobody argues with this.
  14. Was one of your last practice sessions all reload practice? Quite possible that muscle memory was stuck in your brain.
  15. The stage diagrams show them angled: https://scsa.org/stages
  16. They're cheap enough to give one or two a try. And calling them for new floorplates had them to my door in three days.
  17. I've had zero issues with my ETS 140's. None. They changed the geometry of their floorplates a few years back and if you ask them they'll send you the updated ones for free. I have a set in 9mm for CO and a set in .40 if I decide to shoot my Glock 22 in Limited (have a few times). The 9mm have been through LOTS of matches. YMMV, of course, and they're plastic mags, but they've been 100% for me.
  18. Especially given current ammo prices. Sure, most of these folks reload, but I see a lot of .22 (and shoot a lot of .22) at SCSA matches because price.
  19. I've got a set of ETS 140mm mags that have been flawless for me.
  20. And here I am bringing my 8" Dan Wesson to my next Steel Challenge just to have some fun in OSR... and because I have .38 Spl ammo to spare.
  21. From my original post - the ammo I got is this: Speer 140gr .Frangible/Training 45 GAP @ 1130 fps (158 PF). It doesn't make Major (though I did pick up a few boxes - maybe enough for two matches - to make Major in L10, but I already have Limited guns... so why?
  22. I don't reload. I still shoot. That brings up the current "where ammo?" problem. I took advantage of a deal GT Distributors had on FHP turn-in guns and ammo - Gen 4 Glock 37's in .45 GAP. $329 for the gun, $.28 cpr for ammo: 140gr .45 GAP @ 1130 fps (158 PF). They had some other ammo that would make major in limited... but I have a Limited Major gun in .40 already. For those not familiar, .45 GAP was made to be "45 ACP in the same length as 9mm," reducing the grip length of the gun from a large-frame Glock to the standard-frame. It's functionally a Glock 17/22 frame with a Glock 20 slide. Standard mags are 10 rounds, making Production a simple choice. As a bonus, FHP had already configured them with fiber front and flat black rear sights, so it was set up as I prefer. First lesson... it WILL NOT fit in most Glock 17 holsters as it's 3mm wider (it fits Glock 20 holsters fine). One eBay stop later and the Comp-Tac was on the way. I put a titanium guide rod, 13 lb recoil spring, and TTI plunger/striker/trigger springs in it and my lord, it runs like a scalded cat. With the additional weight/balance and respring, it's not that much difference from a Glock 17 @ 130PF. By math alone the bullet produces 26% wider holes (almost 2.5mm wider than 9mm), which doesn't hurt on those close-to-the-perf shots. With empty mag, it comes to 30.41 oz now (up from 28.75 w/empty mag, factory config, vs 24.87 oz factory weight on a Glock 17 w/mag). It should be a fun rest-of-season, and I've got more than enough ammo to practice and shoot matches now.
