  1. Isn't JJ Racaza was part of Team Caracal?
  2. Limited minor or Open (assuming you already have the rig) It's likely that my wife will either go Limited Minor or Open her first match. Like others have said, no need to complicate things with reloads, etc - she'll just want to go have fun. Fwiw, I only throw in Open because she has an easier time racking the slide on my open gun.
  3. My guess is that you are crowding the barricade. If this is the case, then back up a bit so you don't have to change your grip. How far? In my opinion (others on here may disagree), you want to be far enough away from the barricade that you can swing towards another target array without having to change your frame - so a little past arms length. When possible (sometimes it is not), choose shooting positions where you do not have to compromise your shooting 'frame.' To me, 'frame' means the position you would take if you were shooting at one paper target directly in front of you - your gun is in the middle of your chest (relatively), and your extended arms and back make a triangle.
  4. I've been watching a lot of the videos from this year's USPSA Nationals, and have noticed something while people transition between arrays. Assume that the distance between arrays is 3-4 steps, and no reload is performed between the arrays. Some people will let go of the gun with the weak hand while running between arrays, and some will keep the grip, but 'disengage' (disengage is my term for bringing the gun closer to one's chest). Are there times when you should do one or the other, or is it a preferences thing?
  5. Consider buying a new gun whenever you want to buy a new gun If a new gun will make you want to practice/shoot more, then get it. If you like your XDm - stick with it. Here's what I know about the differences between Major and Minor. Major shooters have about a 1s advantage over a minor shooter for a given stage. Meaning - if you're shooting minor, you'll have to shoot about 1s faster per stage than an equivalent major shooter. This assumes that you get the same hits, and the hits are 75% As and 25% Cs - like the many of the top shooters. (Ratios based on 2014 Area 8 and Area 4 scores) FWIW, I attached a file that shows the times and the A/C ratios a minor shooter needs to get to make the same hit factor as a major shooter. The A/C distribution for Major is 75/25 in the attached sheet. It also includes the times a minor shooter would need to hit if they increased their accuracy. Apologies in advance if the numbers are off a slight bit - I put this together in 10 mins. You get the idea. Major vs Minor.pdf
  6. I won 500 rounds of Ibeji moly bullets, so I got a 500 pack of their 230gr RNs. This is my first time to use moly - usually, I go with Xtreme plated, but since these are free... So for those using moly, what is your powder of choice? While I'm asking - did you change your recoil spring to accommodate the load? (currently using an 18 or 18.5) Of course, the end goal is to find a load that makes Major and groups well. Thanks in advance!
  7. JHP Accuracy-wise, it seems to be pretty good. I zeroed my dot at 20 yds off bags at an indoor range and it held a 1.5" group. I know a good bit of that variance was me.
  8. Fwiw, 7.6gr CFE at 1.240 OAL using a 124 MG (weighed 124.1 @ chrono) made 166PF at Area 4.
  9. Nardis was a really good range - nice people and nice facilities. I'd go back again. Thanks for the tip!
  10. Would like some suggestions for an indoor range in San Antonio. I had to travel here this week, and I want to zero my open gun. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
  11. Well yeah, I saw that article. Whether good or bad, I always seem to give more creedence to posts on BE vs internet articles. I'll have better data to share in a few days - I worked up 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, and 7.4gr loads. To the chrono, Batman!
  12. Is anyone using CFE Pistol for 38 super major with 124gr projectiles? If so, how much and what OAL? Sorry if this is a repeat thread, but all my searches came up with loads for 9mm major. Thanks!
  13. I have been competing for about 3 years, and only began taking things 'seriously' this past year. My definition of 'serious' means that I've set a goal of being a GM - other people have their own definitions of 'serious,' but this is mine. After setting this goal, I began training - both dry fire (daily) and live fire (usually 2-3x month plus matches). I don't think I'm burned out with training yet, but I feel like I'm close . For example, I spent the past two weeks hammering the dry fire drills in preparation for a local club's 8-stage outlaw match ($45 for 8 stages - hell of a deal IMO). I get to the match today, and as I'm unloading my gear into the cart, and I feel like I don't want to shoot the match. So, I just RO-ed the match and didn't fire a single shot (fortunately, the match is over two days, so I can shoot it tomorrow if I want). Many of you have set similar goals for yourselves and have reached them, i.e., win my club match, win a LV 2, become A/M/GM, etc. My questions: How do you find balance? How do you continue to have fun while being 'serious' about shooting? There are a number of posts that talk about what to do 'after' you're burned out. How do you prevent from getting burned out? Thanks in advance folks!

  15. I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but I can't seen to find a thread that discusses it - 5" or 6" limited gun? Is there a reason, other than personal preference, to go with one or the other?
  16. Ben Stoeger is putting on a class for my club December at the Pacleb Ranch in Bellville, TX. The range is a little west of Impact Zone. Info should be on the classes section of the forum.
  17. Sounds good - when we finalize dates, I'll reach out. Thanks!
  18. Are there any situations that would call for a dot focus?
  19. Still trying how best to aim with the open gun. For those who have read BE's book, you know about the different shooting focal points. These all make perfect sense for guns with iron sights. Should this change when shooting open with a red dot? Take 'Type 3' focus for example, where the idea is to focus on your sight and not your target. When using a red dot, is it better to focus on your dot, or should you always focus on your target and the dot just "appear" on the target?
  20. Any matches in or near Gulf Shores, AL? Will be in the area for family vacation this August, and would like to get a match in. Anything - USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, 3-gun - whatever you got!

  22. FWIW I have both - I shot the G34 Gen 4 (Vogel trigger) in IDPA/USPSA for 2.5 years and a recently picked up a CZ SP-01 (Accu Shadow). They are definitely different, but are both good Production/SSP rigs - both capable of getting you to GM with enough practice. Both reliable. You have to clean the CZ more often, but no surprise there. The trigger in the CZ is noticeably better - especially after the 1st shot. My CZ is DA/SA, but the 1st pull is about the same as the Vogel trigger. The SA shots are almost like my open gun - very 1911-esque in pull weight and reset distance. Muzzle flip is a touch better with the CZ, though the G4 recoil spring coupled with the Glock grip angle seems to make it a closer fight. Accuracy @ 35 yards goes to CZ, but again, it's closer than one may think. Offhand 5 shot comparison, CZ put 2 in the 10 ring, 3 in the 9 ring. G34 put 3 in the 9, and 2 in the 8 ring. CZ is a nicer gun. When people told me that a Glock is a 'tool,' I didn't understand what they meant until I shot the Glock and the CZ back to back. However, I spent 2.5 years learning how to be accurate and fast with this 'tool.' For me, it's all about the reps I put into dry fire, live fire, matches, etc. I'm not at the level where a better trigger and better platform accuracy will make a huge difference - if you are, then my opinion is that the CZ has the capability if getting you an extra .5% or drop an extra few seconds from your overall. I have plenty of time to shave off in draw, transitions, etc.
  23. Curiosity killed the proverbial cat I guess - what do you use and why? Bladetech holster & CR Speed mag pouches here. Honestly, the only reason I chose these was because these brands were all I knew about at the time
  24. ...but not for long! Just got some N320 and 3n38
  25. 94 have signed up in the first 3 days of registration - get in while you can!
