  1. At our club the rooftop prop is pretty tall and has foot stops to mount and climb it. Some people take the time to go all the way up however I usually shoot from a reverse kneeling position. Having the rail clamped to the apex of the roof allows the gun to slide laterally and transition targets very quickly, having my strong side leg elevated allows me to brace my strong side elbow on my knee, and since I'm only climbing 2/3 of the way up it's very quick to mount.
  2. There is no one consensus as many people do many different things however I think a long smooth rail offers the most options for how you are going to mount a barricade and if you have things attached to the rail then it limits your ability to slide the rifle around as necessary. Additionally sometimes its faster and more stable for you to slide the rifle laterally on the barricade instead of reposition your body behind the wall when changing targets, having stuff attached to your rail reduces how smoothly you can accomplish this. Same as having an actual quad rail with all the sections instead of something like a 15 inch Samson. I would reco you strip all the unnecessary stuff of your rail(s) and learn to index on the same spot on the gun freestyle without a hand stop present, then practice mounting barricades in various positions until it's natural... then don't worry about it anymore and focus on sights / trigger.
  3. I'd recommend Nordic but make sure to get the capacity that matches the division you're going to shoot in. Factory / Irons / Limited - 8rd TACOPS / Tac Scope / Practical - biggest available, 12? 13? Some will say 12rd isn't necessary and that is true most of the time, but more capacity gives you more options to load up depending on your game plan - which is nice sometimes.
  4. This could be a neat idea to funnel the shells in easier however I think its a solution looking for a problem. That being said, I'm staying tuned to see if anyone pans out the idea into something useable because I'm always looking for the next solution to my perceived problem
  5. Yeah stage 5 was a little sloppy, I'm just glad I didn't fall
  6. I am interested in any critiques of the posted videos. Where am I slow? Where am I wrong? I have done some of this on my own already and made a list where it looks like I'm slow but anyone else (Alma) who'd like to do a review, I would appreciate another set of eyes.
  7. I use the Invictus DeTurk 8x24 vest and its pretty fantastic. I used it again this weekend at the 3GN Regional. Having hand space between the groupings of shells makes them easy to grab. Vertical spacing between the clips allows for the shells to be held on the brass if desired, or on the plastic hull if desired. This results in 2 different retention strengths on the shells in case your course of fire has vigorous movement. Additionally, the nonslip pads on the backside of the vest allows you to wear it high or low on your torso without fear of it moving around. If I was going to change anything about this vest, it would be that I would have got it sooner.
  8. The shooting at VIR this past weekend was great. Stage design, target presentations, and even dealing with the rain/mud, everything was as good as it could be. Thank you to the match staff especially the Range Officers who make this stuff possible. I know people usually thank their sponsors, but they're not the ones putting matches on the ground and making them run smooth.
  9. June 27-28, 3 Gun Nation MidAtlantic Regional in Virginia This was a very fun weekend and actually got some decent shooting videos. If I had shot a clean match then I would have still been 6 seconds short of winning, and still 3rd place because the top 2 guys were only half a second apart. Bummer. CoF #2 was definitely my favorite because I've never shot a pure 3GN style, self starting, polish plate rack, rifle on steel inside 50 yards, run and gun gauntlet like that. It was also nice to beat Chris by a few seconds on a drag race! 1 - 2 - 3 - not captured on video! 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - Still trying to figure out how I want to do video in the future. GoPro? Pivothead? Cellphone camera? This was all shot with my Android tablet and looks much better on the device than it does on youtube for some reason.
  10. Saturday June 20 Shot the local 3-Gun match at my home club Peacemaker National Training Center and crushed it. I decided to shoot my irons rifle with 1x optic, shotgun with 8rd tube, and CZ with 15rd magazines in the Optics division... and even with my reduced capacity guns & irons rifle, I placed 3rd overall. The courses of fire were fun, fast, included movement, one had a low port, one had a round robin run, shooting from a van and the long range was visible and shootable by all divisions (because you could clearly SEE the targets).
  11. Friday June 19 Went to Peacemaker today and practiced close range pistol and shotgun on a plate rack. Warmed up with some pistol draws, then running a plate rack at 10 yards, then stepping into a box and breaking a shot on just 1 plate on the rack as quickly and efficiently as possible. Then I replicated the exact same thing with the shotgun and realized that my shotgun at 15 yards. Afterwards I went to shoot some long range with a local sponsored Pro shooter. Picked her brain about the industry and 3 Gun as a sport, sponsors and politics; and decided that the more I learn about it the less I like it. I just want to shoot and do well, have fun with friends and learn stuff as I build myself into a more capable shooter. Anyway, it was a good day!
  12. Started listening to the 3 Gun Show Alot of gear talk but also some good training & technique stuff http://www.3gunshow.com/
  13. What about making the 400+ targets bonus targets and count as a ten sec time reduction each. Don't think you can hit it? Don't waste your time. If you know you can then take the shots. If you just want to see what happens for fun go ahead see what happens. Irons shooters may not bother with it, more scoped probably will go for it, another division distinction for better or worse who knows? Personally as long as I can see it, I will shoot it... so a 4moa target at 600 doesn't bother me (until I'm missing and taking penalties, but I'll wait until then to be annoyed).
  14. Great points Jim! Bright backers with grey steel is just as good as painted steel as far as I'm concerned. Visibility is key to shooting and anything that provides contrast is good enough. I know some people don't like it that they can't see their impacts on the berm but there's usually enough berm available in the now highly visible impact area that you can purposefully come off target and see some dirt fly to make an on the fly adjustment. As for FNH 3Gun, yes.
  15. Set 2 generous targets 90 degrees apart, preferably non-falling steel at 7-10 yards. Something easy because the focus here is on the transition, not accuracy Draw, and one hit each as fast as you can. Mix dry fire and high speed par timed live fire for the best results The more you do it, the more your speed will increase and your inefficiencies will break down ***Remember to snap your head to the next target and the gun will follow
  16. When you're practicing with your conscious mind grip the gun with both hands using 100% of your grip strength. Then get higher on the gun. Then torque your elbows out and up, putting even more pressure on the gun. You don't have to choose a technique, use them all. Find a way to mesh them together so that you can not only hold on to the gun during recoil, but so you can dominate the gun during recoil. Then when it's time to execute a course of fire, don't think about the grip / strength / technique / whatever - just draw the gun and shoot the targets.
  17. You know, for a 200 yard and closer 3-Gun match... that new Armalite 13 inch race rifle seems pretty well equipped... Just thought I'd give a shout out to the title sponsor of the event! Looking forward to it!
  18. I don't think it's any more / less accurate because of the barrel length (even at distance) but the muzzle brake is being worked harder and there's alot less weight in the gun overall. I'll be shooting 600 yards tomorrow so I guess I'll be able to test my theory.
  19. I'm happy with my new 13" Armalite so far
  20. Well there's a possible trade off. Those thicker shooters who might deal with the recoil better from an awkward position will probably have a harder time getting into and out of some of this same positions as fast.
