  1. I own STIs & SVs as well as owning 2 older versions of the TS until recently. Overall, I think the TS is BETTER than the STIs and SVs I have owne & built because: -The CZ is reliable right out of the box. Experiences vary w/ folks buying S_I guns - you might get lucky and an S_I gun works 100% for you - or your new S_I might require a lot of gunsmithing and a lot of load testing to get it reliable. Ever notice how many custom S_I smiths are out there? The TS is designed to take factory length ammo and will reliably take loads up to 1.170" OAL -It does not need a trigger job. Mine were both 2 lbs., zero Oz. when new and broke in at 1.75 lbs. The new gun I handled at a store recently was the same - as was a friend's gun. Plus the adjustments are done by you w/ an allen wrench (included). Virtually no overtravel and very short reset. Just like STI, it comes with a light polymer trigger. -It won't follow or double. Niether of mine ever have had this difficulty. It seems to happen eventually w/ light triggers in other brands. -Capacity is a reliable/reloadable 20 with Taylor Freelance mag base. -Its accurate as heck! -The rear sight on the TS acts as a slide racker and there are adjustable sights & fiber optics for it if you want those - plus mag wells, grips, holsters, etc. So why is it better? Because it sells for about $900 brand new and works as well or better than a $1600 to $2000 .40 from another maker. That difference in price pays for a lot of ammo. Downsides? The gun is heavy - remember that the reigning Limited gun is a light Glock - but I prefer a heavier gun for .40. AND the grip is a bit large for some hands- though that is easily fixed. More info: www.ghostholster.com www.czshooters.com www.strictlyIPSC.com Regards, D. PS as for Glock mags, "It is easy to have 20 round mags. A little tweaking will get you 21." - the Glock's mags are really good. That is simply a fact. Both the CZ and the S_I really benefit from keeping the mag clean - particularly if either brand mag falls into the sand or mud during a stage.
  2. Saw it off and clean it up w/ an end mill, then dress up (i.e.- "melt treatment") the edges. Just make sure the chambers are not cut at too much of and angle or you may have to make an angled end to the comp. -and you ended up with a limited gun?
  3. You can buy USPSA-legal 140mm length mags/parts for the TS and the CZ "Standard IPSC" (same gun). THey can be made to reliably hold 20 rounds and are reloadable - which is an advatage over the competition with only 19 in their stock magazines. I am not aware of any 140mm length Sig mags or parts for sale. Not sure what capacity they might be if they were available. Otherwise, the Sig looks like a quality gun and I am all for more competition and choices in USPSA Limited (i.e. - where are the Caspians?). TY44934
  4. You did not specify if it was a slide for a Tanfoglio, a CZ, a Glock, etc. or one of the 1911s. Virtually nothing is "drop in" on a 1911. If it is a 1911 slide, I would not look to a "mistake" by the manufacturer. Rather, send the parts to a qualified gunsmith for fitting. I suspect there is nothing defective with your slide. Regards, C.
  5. " I did get excellent workmanship and fast turnaround at a fair price." That has always been my experience with Brian's work - though I found the prices were rock bottom and the machine work + know-how to be second to none. He know his way around CZ and Tanfoglios too!
  6. Correct - which was the point of the 9x23 over the .38 sup since the 1911 barrel is completely unsupported in its original, non-ramped configuration. Additional benefit to 9x23 is tapered case for better extraction, rimless, and no confusion over the variable bore diameters found on .38 sup over the past half century. Great inovation I believe.
  7. "What are some alternatives with the same qualities as the VV line?" -not to be a smart ass, but there are no companies with the same overall quality as V V. Why? The Finns are extremists when it comes to their powder. They even go so far as to own specialized cotton farms that grow specific strains of cotton to V.V.'s specifications in order to control the consistency and quality of their single based powders. HOWEVER, there are alternatives. Single based powders used for Open and available in the US include 4756 and 7625, among others. I found a fast burning (i.e. - NOT open Division) single based powder that I am using as an alternative to N320: I am still testing Solo 1000. Regards, C.
  8. Are they brass or copper jacketed?
  9. On the one hand, Eric does shoot only rimless .38 super through a large frame gun. On the other hand, there were TONS of P-9s (small frame tanfoglios) that were built as open guns in either 9x19 or later converted to 9x21 - but still running at 9x19 OAL - and those were shot constantly using 175+ PF ammo!! The gun can certainly take it though you want to get the EGW slide stop for it and heed the advice above re fitting. Or just send it to EGW.
  10. Agreed - sounds like some serious anti-.40 cal bias going on. Take a look around on the .40/10mm reloading section here - including the recent post on "new to .40 reloading" for up-to-date info. I think you will find about 98% of us shooting an STI or SV .40 are reloading for it, often with brass that has been reloaded a reasonable number of times. Mind if I ask where in MD such dubious advice came from? and, welcome to the forum. C. TY-44934
  11. Yeah - the 3.2 to 3.3 is what I would have used in the 17. The TG load that would not work w/ my box stock 17 was the 2.9 grns at 1.150" OAL and Zeros. Maybe a lighter spring would have helped back then.
  12. TG loads look fine - and I LIKE the OAL for feeding and safety. Check several sources, but even the 3.2 grn looks to be below the max book for TG & 147s - (double check). Couldn't get a 17 to cycle w/ the start load of TG you listed. Also, since you are ojnly shooting for Minor, try to stick to the faster powders on the burn rate. For example, Universal would be too slow for the recoil perception you want. AA2 is better, but TG better still. No experience with winchester.
  13. Great work dad! Thanks for posting the pics Stuart. Regards, D. TY-44934

  15. Correct. However, far too often in USPSA, new Limited shooters seem to think that STI and SV are the "only" options to be competitive in Limited. Didn't a Glock beat all the STI and SV guns at the last USPSA Nationals? I was simply pointing out the options in Limited now that the national AWB is dead, and pointing out the further difficulties that state bans pose to the future of some of our divisions (even though I live in VA and am not subject to such restrictions). Please pardon the thread drift. D.

I have no intention of violating any forum rules regarding politics, so please moderate this post if its inappropriate, but there is more INFORMATION on this issue (and possibly info on efforts to defeat this bill - if you catch my drift) at this LINK on another forum, the "hometown" section for Washington D.C. and Maryland, on ar15.com Here is the full URL: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&...5563&page=1 Also, one of our fellow USPSA, 3 gun, and IDPA shooters (Henry Heymering) is leading an effort to preserve the pistol shooting sports in MD and info about him + his efforts is available on his site: www.marylandshallissue.org I enjoy USPSA and 3 gun shooting in MD. This bill could seriously impact the ability of out-of-state shooters to participate in MD. Regards, D. Johnson
  17. The downside to that machine is that it does not use collets. Rather, the tooling must be help by a regular chuck - which has mane disadvantages such as lack of precision, ability to come loose, etc. The minimum you want is a machine that takes R-8 collets. Take a look at the comparison chart on www.littlemachineshop.com D.
  18. Good point. We don't generally pick up brass around here - it stays where it falls. Speeds up the match and it all goes to the same place as the gravel we keep putting down year after year.
  19. rubberneck wrote: " How the hell can the state of NY know when a mag was manufactured? Since they don't come with serial numbers I don't see how they can figure out when the mag was actually produced. I am sure there are plenty of NY open and limited shooters take advantage of this by buying new ones and having them shipped to friends in the states they are legal and then onto NY. I am not suggesting that you do this, as that would be illegal." Well, for 1911s, then yes, they CAN'T tell when it was made. But for many guns, like the X-5 or Tactical Sports that were invented after the ban, they might know ALL mags for the frame are verboten - like the new Caspian .40s. -another reason we should maintain Production and L-10 mag limits.
  20. That's a good point. Where in the heck can any normal person FIT a bridgeport? Its not like most of us have basements or garages unless you are rich & own a huge place (if so, pay someone to do your machine work). And how many condos/apartments HAVE 220v?!?! I've proven that you CAN do it all on a 1911/2011 w/ a mini-mill if you have the skills. I miss having access to the old bridgeport copy at Phil Strader's place, but there are very very few things one would NEED one of those for. Well, a dryer outlet is 220v, but the essential point remains.. In my neighborhood garages are mostly not-used for car storage, but I still like to have the option when hail storms come by. OK - to be honsest, I have not asked. I suppose they <might> let me install a Bridgeport in the laundry room - so long as I made it coin-operated and let the rest of the condo use it too!

  22. The MASADA should really take off once it is available. Why? -it uses my FAVORITE Ar-15 barrel, the [insert favorite brand here] -beacause MY chosen barrel is "the best!" -it comes with a gas-piston upper (thrown in for free!!) - using a reall gas piston just like the: [pick one: M-1 Garand, M14, M1 Carbine, FAL, FNC, AK-47, Galil, G-36 etc. etc. etc.] - and EVERYONE knows that gun I chose from the above list is "the best!" -it uses AR-15 mags - and I prefer (insert magazine brand here) because, say it with me, "its the best!" -the stock folds! AND, I NEED A FOLDING STOCK because [insert reason of choice here] -it uses AR-15 trigger components - and I will ONLY use [insert trigger brand here] - because MY trigger choice is, of course, "the best!" Seriously, MagPul have designed a better mousetrap. This is the company that convinced the punters to buy $200+ plastic AR-15 stocks that are WORTH it because (er - get back to me if you can figure this one out) and the "tacti-cool" AR-15 grip (again, were the old parts broken?). Nonetheless, their AR-15 followers are an improvement. Hope to heck they follow through w. this one. Also - agree that: with the dems in control + rising crime = not looking good for further roll-backs of current gun controll and quite likely that we will see new restrictions passed & they are already popping up at thestate level. W/ luck, magpull will beat the clock and I'll be the 1st in line for the new rifle.
  23. Use the Dremmel cut-off wheel to lighten the hammer. "Montana Gold 230 gr RN and these will drop right in" Good advice. when you have some spare pocket change, buy a Dremel bit called a "Cratex" and just break the edges of the cylinder holes. Go slow, and don't get greedy. Trick is to TAKE CYLINDER OFF OF GUN, grind lightly, clean like CRAZY, and once you think all the polishing grit is gone, clean it AGAIN (nothing eats up a gun faster than grit).
  24. That weight is consistent w/ many configurations of the AR. Sig's website lists the 556 barrel as "cold hammer forged" and import restrictions mean it has to have been made in Exeter, NH (not Switzerland or Germany). Quite an accomplishment on Sig's part to get these things built and out to the public. It is good to have options & competition in the 3gun equipment world. Will it be competitive? Remains to be seen.
  25. 231 = HP 38 - for purposes of loading .45 ACP. You are better off w/ straight Clays or Solo 1000 though.
