could be a number of things. is it failing to eject, or failing to chamber a round? with a lighter slide mass, your mainspring may now be a bit too much. another culprit once you lighten a slide and run a recoil spring that light could be the firing pin retainer angle. i have a slide on an old steel gun that is REALLY hogged out. i run a 5 lb recoil spring and had to mod the angle of the firing pin retainer to get it to unlock smooth enough. if it's not locking, there are other issues.

Just chuck john's barrel on any good upper and it will freak you out!

last time i talked to taran, he was still shooting a 16". bruce might go with a 20" for irons, but i dunno. 18" seems perfect to me. i had a 16" that was cut from a 20, and it just didn't shoot well. but i've shot some 16's that shot just great. i think the weight is the big deal, so we're talking barrel contour, not length. then, you get into gas systems issues when you start going short as well.
