  1. You should tune the extractor more precisely than that video shows. There are brass "gauges" that you slide into the extractor and then pull out using a trigger pull gauge to get accurate tension reading. I always keep mine at 14 - 20 ounces. There is also an extractor bending jig available that very precisely bends the extractor to adjust tension. I think Wilson Combat or Weigand makes them (?), it's been a few years but they do exist. Just doing the "hand feel" check with spent brass is OK for a gross approximation but an accurate setting is much better. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/handgun-tools/action-frame-tools/extractor-tools/extractor-tension-gauge-set-prod16125.aspx http://www.jackweigand.com/eat.html
  2. NO. That likely indicates a fit problem of the barrel/slide which is stressing the link... or a defective link. STI will fix it for free.
  3. If done correctly, the ball detent lockup is actually better than the one at the tip of the ejector rod. Not sure about durability, but your question of: "Is it as durable as the 627 Pro or an older model 27?" Hits a nerve with me. The quality of new SW revos (including PC guns) has been so inconsistent recently I will never buy another new one. I bought a new 627 which had serious problems and I was really ticked off. In general, I think older SW's are probably better just because they were built better, based on my limited experience. Python timing problems is a well known weakness, but their internals are completely different than a SW. If you get a good 627, I think it would be very durable. The N frame is "overdesigned" for the .357 round so it should stand up well.
  4. If not the recoil buffer: check the magazines. The "10 round" single stack 9mm mags sometimes have a goofy follower or a reduced length spring, may not be pushing the slide stop up with enough force. If it is a shok-buff problem: just pull the slide back manually and see if the slide stop has enough room to slide up into the slide cut out. They make thinner buffs in case that one is too thick.
  5. They have been trying to disarm us since 1989! It's coming! That really is the problem in a nutshell. Blind panic started the shortage and gougers are haording/reselling to exploit the stupidity. The problem is that the media revives the panic constantly running stories on gun control, and some fools who don't understand basic government think the admin can sieze guns/ammo by issuing an executive order or signing a treaty. Until the panic stops, the hoarding/gouging will continue and shortages will be the normal mode. I think it will continue for at least a year, maybe more.
  6. TRICK: cut the tape to size but before you install it, use a small piece of the tape to "scuff it down" to level the sharpness off some.
  7. True statement that applies to just about any mass-made gun. You may get a good one, no way to predict. In many cases (COUGH! SMITH_WESSON COUGH!) they give you a lifetime warranty and use their customers as their QA. The good semi-custom makers like STI actually care if the gun is right before it ships.
  8. "I WANT A 1911 AS RELIABLE AS GLOCK! WHICH BRAND?" I'm not sure it's possible to build a 1911 as crappy as a Glock, but my STI Trojan 9mm has fired so many thousands of rounds without a burp I could not even count it. My Para 1640 was a nightmare from day one, total piece of crap.
  9. Actually, I have run across some of the newer MIM rebound slides that were RIDICULOUSLY soft. I flat polished one on 600 paper for about 5 seconds and could not believe how much came off. The older forged slides were extremely hard, the new ones do not seem to be hardened at all or maybe they have quality problems on them.
  10. Well, there are about 30 million of us who don't anymore if you count all of us.
  11. If you want a cheap way. I cut the end of a popsicle stick off square and wrap some 400 and 600 sandpaper around the end and oil sand it smooth. Nearly all SW's get drag marks on the frame there from the RB slide.
  12. I have a 66 that does that when I try to pull the trigger left handed but works fine firing right handed due to the angle the trigger is being pulled coming back. That's why shims can prevent the problem.
  13. Was 95 in San Jose for the last three days. They hit 88 at the coast which is unheard of. Now that climate change has moved in, all we get is "20 over/20 under" weather. The temps always run about 20 degrees above or below normal. And of course, the hot dry weather has brought in the wildfires up and down the state which turns the air brown. What a treat.
  14. Always. The worst mistake is to "suspend" the rights of law because of a "threat". It's the excuse that every tinpot dictator on earth uses when they invoke martial law and suspend freedom. Give him the best attorney, a full trial.... then fry him. There is already overwhelming evidence, the whole world should see it.
  15. The smart money is to try him civilian, give him all his constitutional rights, then execute him so that the lunatics who support him can't claim he was railroaded by some drum head court. His mother is already screaming that her sons were "framed".
  16. You are correct: self inflicted attempt to end his own life and he missed that too.
  17. +1. he's a citizen in name only. He sure ain't a citizen in my book. He was born in a country where the mass scale slaughter of civilians (including school children) is an accepted practice to achieve terrorist ends. he may have come to my country and got some fool to give him citizenship, but he brought his religion, values and morality from some place else.maybe this is a "teachable moment" for all of those who think we need free immigration......
  18. Are they CZ factory mags? The aftermarket mags I got for my CZ were so bad they took me forever to get them to work.
  19. I seriously don't think vegetarians know what a royal PITA they are when somebody is trying to feed them. I used to take my departments out for pizza lunches sometimes and always had to order the "veggie specials" for the two vegetarians........ guess what there was always twenty five pieces of at the end of the lunch. The grossest thing is trying to buy Chinese food for my in laws (two vegetarians): you have to get two TOFU "main dishes" which are the grossest crap I have ever seen and nobody ever finishes that junk. And of course all the noodles, rice and egg rolls have to be vegetarian. Funniest movie I ever saw last night: guy is in line for food on a ship and when the cook serves him, he says: "I can't eat this. I must have vegetarian food." The cook says: "Well, no problem. You can eat it. The cow I made the stew from was a vegetarian and the pig I made the sausage from was too."
  20. It's because you are not allowed to have a "discussion" in this forum... wait...... did I just.....discuss.....? AAGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!
  21. I also bought a para in late 90's and they used a very low quality cast extractor. If you are having extractor problems, best to just punt the extractor and fit a good one. No sense fighting a cheap part. If you are having extract issues, I would also polish the barrel throat. Also make sure the ammo is good quality and properly sized or that can cause FTE jams.
  22. That's pretty cool. I got a very expensive set of Pirellis for my wife's Murano last year.... drove it home and noticed one of the alarms was whining. The wheels all have pressure sensors built in: I scanned the pressures and three of them were 35 psi and one tire was 80 PSI! I checked that tire with a gauge and it really was 80 psi, so I drained off the excess pressure. They mount the tire and then over inflate them to set the bead and verify no leaks. They forget to lower the pressure on that one tire. I called the guy at the tire place and told him what they did, I was pretty ticked off because if I had driven it at high speed on the freeway the tire probably would have exploded from the excess pressure. The guy just mumbled some baloney and said he didn't believe me.
  23. Even the guide rod/bushing on my 1640 was non standard diameter.I would say about Para what I would say about any mass made 1911: if you are lucky enough to get a good one, it's great deal. If you get one of the many dogs (I did) your new hobby becomes working on the gun and mailing it back to Para, not shooting it. I won't list all the things wrong with the $1100 1640 I bought about ten years back, but on the upside: it educated me on the 1911 and made me smart enough to buy a STI next time.
  24. It might work, but SW hammer/trigger sets are fitted. According to Kuhnhausen they should always be changed AS SETS. One critical fit pertains to the DA pull "handoff" going from lifting the hammer with the trigger beak to the "step" and it is an absolutely critical fit. You might need to fit a new DA sear to the hammer.
