  1. Are you saying they changed TX law 30.06, or is this something they "just did" by deciding the law did not mean what is says?
  2. There is plenty of precedent for the media agreeing not to publish what it considers harmful information. The major media does not naming sexual assault victims and minors involved in crimes - rather than being seen as "getting the scoop on the competition", including such details is seen as irresponsible and won't gain the newspaper any points (though I am not in total agreement on the part about not naming minors). When I lived in Rochester, NY about 20 years ago, the major newspaper agreed to not mention the race of a criminal unless it was part of a sufficiently detailed description as to be of assistance to the police in finding the suspect. This happened because of community pressure from groups that felt that naming the race could be politically incorrect and offend someone.
  3. iI it's a modern system, it's recording to a hard drive in a circular buffer and DVDs are only written after an incident. With IP based cameras and modern networks, a business owner can make it dang near impossible to find the recording unit, set up decoy units, or even locate the recording it in another part of the country.
  4. www.smokecloak.com The videos these folks show at the Shot Show exhibit a much quicker filling of the place.
  5. Of what significance is this mark?
  6. A contract longer than the President's term can be signed with consent of the board.
  7. Just because a range had the facilities and is interested, does not mean it will work. I remember one very qualified range that made an excellent proposal - and included a "non-negotiable multi year committment" - without any track record of hosting a USPSA Nationals as a starting point for discussion. I know another qualified range that was scheduled to run a large USPSA (not nationals) match that made the mistake of announcing the location before a contract was signed. Guess what? The price doubled when the match director attempted to make the transition from "verbal understanding" to "signed contract". It's very simply to say "all these clubs will do it", but the list starts to narrow when you get down to details.
  8. Soon ends the instant Michael Voigt has a signed contract with the match venue.
  9. While we're at it, we could have a bylaw that requires USPSA to hold the nationals on precipitation free days with temperatures between 65 and 85. It's not always that easy to get a contract signed, and details have to be worked out. Also, telling our vendors there is a "drop dead" could dramatically reduce USPSA's ability to negotiate if we got close to that date with no signed contract. I favor early announcement of the dates, and will encourage the president to get the contract ironed out as early as possible, but it's not as simple as "say it must be so and it will happen". Rob
  10. Only if not properly cared for. Carbon steel, properly cared for, will still be blued carbon steel in 20 years and I've got a Colt Detective Special from the 70's or 80's to prove it. I've also got a stainless S&W J frame with a bit of pitting picked up back when before I realized in was stainLESS rather than stainNONE steel. On tightly fitted 1911s a blued gun will stay tighter longer than a stainless one, all things being equal - especially if you let it run dry of lube. 4340 carbon steel is just a bit tougher than 4140. I can't think of an issue in revolvers where this will present the same kind of issue it can in a 1911 though. This qualifies as an "inconvenient truth" since people who like the look and conveneince of stainless find it very convenient to believe that it's just as durable a material.
  11. Also, the older form of encryption (WEP) has been broken and the tools are readily available - google for "airsnort". I also avoid using credit cards over wireless hotel internet when traveling - google for "evil twin" and "man in middle attack" for some reasons why.
  12. You will be able to get early warning this is about to occur when you start to notice variances in the glint doppler effect.
  13. That probably explains why the credits at the end of the show included Dillon Aero, Mike Dillon and another Dillon
  14. Mythbusters did a show on shooting fish in a barrel, and failed miserably with many types of guns. At the very end of the show (the timeslot reserved for large explosions and the like), Jamie produces a black SUV with a M134 that looks remarkably like the one in the Dillon catalog and mentions that the "called in a favor". I was waiting to see Mike Dillon and, although such was not to be, his name did show up at the end in the "thanks to" list. They did get the fish in that one last barrel.
  15. Just think of what a big match could do with those guys in charge of props.
  16. I want to see them to a test to determine if small volumes of fast burning powder can makde the deflagration to detonation transition. Of course, if they failed they would consider it proof of a negative which
  17. The differences document was provided by John Amidon. Bill Noyes was kind enough to convert the "as printed" rulebook to a "PDF indexed" version (both are posted)
  18. Are you referring to the ability to resist primer flow, or to the level of force required to ignite?
  19. There are some signs showing that we may be getting into another primer shortage. Federal and Winchester are largely out of stock, or dealers only have a very few types available. I have on-line access to the distributor used by a very large gun shop I consult for, and they have only Remington available in Pistol and Small Rifle. I have heard credible rumors of price increases on primers in the 20% to 40% range in January, 2008. Which brings me to my question: Does anyone on this list have any experience with Remington primers they can share? I wish to maintain an appropriate inventory of relevant strategic commodities, but am a bit nervous about switching brands when doing so.
  20. A very high volume gunshop in MA has had to switch to Remington primers as both Winchester and Federal are unavailable at his supplier.
  21. The nationals location and date is, under the bylaws, the sole responsibility of the president. Although the president does brief the board on ongoing negotiations, USPSA does not announce a nationals date/location until there is final contract in place. Once that happens, I do not expect that there will be any delay in notifying the membership.
  22. I just posted the 2008 rulebook - we had been holding off until the last area championship of 2007. USPSA had a small pre-production of the new (2008, dark blue cover) rulebook made and distributed to directors and NROI for a final check to make sure we were satisfied with the product before giving the go-ahead for the production run. The "bulk printing" has not yet been completed, so USPSA is not sitting on a vast supply of rulebooks. It is the current plan to have these printed and mailed to members by the January 1, 2008.
  23. 1911s without firing pin blocks can indeed go off when dropped onto concrete - the angle of impact, weight of firing pin, length of firing pin, and weight of firing pin spring are all factors. Many modern guns are "drop safe" due to internal safeties that automatically engage, however, it's important to remember that you can defeat all of these safeties by pulling the trigger (duh) - which can easily happen by trying to catch a dropped or fumbled gun. I'v read reports of police shooting themselves in the leg when an individual attempted to catch a gun they dropped. If you've got a modern gun with fully functional safeties the best approach to a dropped gun may be to stay clear of the gun to avoid hitting the trigger as it falls.
  24. It's also noted on www.uspsa.org (the home page) right under the classifier lookup box.
