  1. Folks, I am looking for red grips with palm swell that are as thick as factory rubber for a Shadow. If I can't get red I'll settle for any non-obnoxious color/pattern, but I would like them as thick as the factory rubber. I have read the "comprehensive CZ grip" post that is now closed/locked, and it looks like the Toni systems grips fit the bill but are over $100 and have to come from Europe. Does anyone have any recommendations?
  2. Looks like registration is up: https://practiscore.com/2016-alabama-steel-challenge-championship/register
  3. Concur. Hence my recommendation for an inexpensive gun that you won't be concerned about when it gets holster wear and scratches in the mag well, which you will get a lot of in single stack.
  4. Rock island armory. Bought one in 2008. Love it, can't say enough about it. Use the money you save to add a Dawson ice magwell and ammo.
  5. I've loaded 2000 223 loaded with one shot and didn't remove the lube after sizing. Never had any feeding issues. I've loaded about 50,000 pistol (9, 40, 45) cases the same way. No issues.
  6. As a Steel Challenge Shooter and a CRO on a stage for our own State Match, I’ll offer my two cents. My comments center around communication, match flow, and competency. Knowledgeable range officers who know the rules and apply them consistently. Don’t just hand the timer/scoring tablet to anyone. That RO represents the host range and club, so make sure that person is more than a warm body. A friendly, customer service oriented match staff is key, especially at competitor check in and the pre-match announcements and communication. Not everyone is computer saavy. There is no “one way fits all” approach. Your “front office” staff needs to accommodate everyone from 8 to 80 years old and make them feel welcome. The match has to flow smoothly, so the range officers on each stage need to know how to move the squad through the stage efficiently. I’ve seen backups and bottelnecks because the range officers were not aware of the need to do this. Flexibility of the match staff to accommodate common sense changes. If you are running ahead of schedule, and it makes sense to shoot a squad early before lunch if that helps that squads logistics, that should be done. The clubhouse should be informed so that they don’t run out of food. Ability to rapidly communicate with radios to someone who is specifically assigned to bring needed supplies such as paint, 2x4s, spare timers, water, ice, etc. on an emergent basis. If lunch is provided, then competitors expect that it will be available, make sure you know that you have enough food and have a plan to get everyone fed in the allotted time. Communicate with the competitors about what is going to happen at what time. This starts as soon as the match is announced. People should know when registration will open, when they need to check in at the match, what stage they are starting on, what time they are eating, roughly what time awards/prizes will be. Changes to this schedule should be announced over the radios to the range officers who will share it with the squad on their bay at that time. Pay attention to the conversations on social media. If lots of folks are asking questions, you aren’t communicating enough. At a steel challenge match, where the stages are already determined, I believe that people want a well-run, well organized match that flows well, things occur when they are supposed to, everyone knows what is going on and when it is going on. No surprises.
  7. mag release = A few dollars expense. A happy wife that shoots with you and doesn't have to learn a new technique? Priceless.
  8. My son has one (he actually won it). I removed the series 80 stuff and added the spacer. An amazing trigger now, breaks like glass.
  9. I think I finally held it together long enough in a classifier match to earn the bump to B class. Woot!
  10. Is it safe to assume that Friday is staff and Saturday and Sunday are for competitors? Will all 8 stages be shot in one day?
  11. Maybe my chamber is too tight, but if I don't chamfer and debut loaded rounds will get stuck in my chamber due to the edge on the case mouth. Seems no one else has this problem so I must be special
  12. Ok, that just seems mentally irregular, he is saying keep your hand safe and let the r.o. take the hits if there is any shrapnel ?? I think he was referring to the method where you cover the ejection port with your hand and retract the slide so the round ejects into your hand. I think that he was saying that had a higher chance hand injury since all the shrapnel would go into your hand. To be fair, that was about 6 years ago, so my memory isn't too sharp on that.
  13. I live in South Mississippi and summertime temps can be 95-98, with 80-90% humidity on top of that with little to no breeze. I shoot with my three kids (ages 11-17) and all of also sail competitively, so we have a bit of a routine that really helps us stay as cool as we can and still maintain our competitive focus in our two heat/sun intensive sports. Starting hydrating as soon as we wake up. The older kids get there cup of coffee (my one concession) in the morning and after that immediately start pushing water and sports drinks. I make them eat breakfast. They have to drink 8-12 oz of water/drink at every stage. We go through a 8 pack of gatoraids and waters every local match. We carry the cooler in arrange cart. After two-three stages, they have to eat a granola bar or something. Hydrating AND eating helps to maintain focus and concentration. Wear white or light colored wicking shirts AND undershorts AND short. No cotton at all. Columbia makes lightweight bathing suits with belt loops that the boys cut the mesh out of. My daughter has similar wicking underwear and lightweight shorts. No dark clothing. Wicking visors. Stay in the shade as much as possible. The range has big fans that they can stand in front of. Some of the old timer have big box fans and small generators they tote around. Biggest things I’ve learned: wicking clothing, hydrate, eat.
  14. I have a 2-3 year old Dillon CV-750 tumbler that has always run hot. When I first got it, I did some research and read that the newer models have sealed motors that run hot. Lately, I am noticing that the unit is running so hot that condensation is forming on the underside of the lid. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal?
  15. I liked the COM belts when you could get them. Integrated keeper and an inner belt you can really tighten
  16. I had my audiologist make me a set a few years ago. They work AWESOME. Now all three of my kids have them as well. Best hearing protection ever. And cheaper than what I see at the big matches from the big name vendors.
  17. The last survey is a little outdated, and there are new holsters on the market, so its time for a new poll.
  18. If the following people on squad 8 are monitoring this thread, please PM me. Johnny Reed AJ McCartney Dane Beatenbough Todd Kellar Jake Reed
  19. I don't think you NEED a CRO or RO certification to run a match, but it helps. Talk you the section coordinator for your section. USPSA lists that person as Wallace W Burbage Charleston, SC 29414 Phone: (843) 224-3932 Email: wwburbage@gmail.com If you can't get in contact with that person, contact the Area 6 Director, Bruce Wells. He can be reached at Area6@uspsa.com
  20. Looks like the weather forecast has been updated to 82F with 0% chance of rain and mostly cloudy skies.
  21. Did anyone just get an email from practiscore with nothing in the body of the email?
