Recommend me a buttstock for 16" competition build
larry weeks replied to 1eyedfatman's topic in Rifle - Technical
There's a 10-32 thread in my ACE "block". I welded a 10-32 screw to a sling socket and put it on mine. Someone needs to make that variation. For a stock, I've gone to the TacMod. Adjusts for length and tilt and has a cheekpiece that aligns my head perfectly when prone. Heavy tho... -
The 6br forum was where I found good info on range finders. Bought the Leica, easy works well BUT, the "box" you put the object to range in is pretty big. Seems to get confused easily with small targets, long ways out. Have better luck with Swaro 10X binos with the range finder built in. Small "box" that I like. if you're trying to get the distance to close plates, Swaro doesn't do close, Leica does.

Haven't used the Luth, love my Tac Mod. I've used the tilting butt pad feature to make if fit even better when I'm prone. As I understand it, the Luth doesn't have that. I'm short and shoot nose almost on the charging handle so I had to change to a JP side charge upper, the stock charging handle hit the cheekpiece. Also grooved the under side of the cheekpiece to clear the sliding part of the charging handle. It acts like a standard one, comes back when hand charging, doesn't reciprocate with the bolt. Spent about 2 hours at the range adjusting things and it has helped my prone shooting tremendously. I can now lock into the gun. I'm lots better, still not a "good" shooter, but do alright. One of the good shooters recommended, "Set up your gun for the toughest situation, make do for the rest."

Tess Salb works for them and shot the Brownells Lady 3-Gun. She asked for any info I had on matches in the Illinois/Iowa area so I sent her links to everybody I know. There's interest there.

Fitting the stock to you will probably reduce felt recoil more than bolting on another stock. Use the spacers to get the drop and cast right. That, along with the right length of pull will help tremendously. I shortened my Benelli way past where the soft factory pad would go back on, put in wood fillers and screwed a Pachmayr Decellerator pad to them. Messed with the cast spacers, added more (I'm at, roughly 5/16"), had to modify the rear steel plate that maintains the cast when you tighten the stock bolt and now have a gun that comes up perfectly, every time. I've shot 100 rounds in an evening of trap with no tenderness or bruises.

As far as print: Am Handgunner has always been one of our best for return vs. $ spent, same for Shotgun News. For us, banner ads don't work - but we're selling a company, not an individual product. We have an affiliate program that does work. Website/blog joins, we post our ads, for every order that comes by clicking the ad, we give them a percentage. YouTube videos drive a lot of business. Top YouTube guys are Hickok 45, Iraqvet888, military arms channel, Jerry Miculek is catching up quickly. Third party endorsements are best, gun writer, internet star/blogger, etc.

I have to say, I was involved, a bit, in the making of this video. The information is still relevant, rifle hasn't changed as much as shotgun has in the last couple of years. He talks about getting into positions, how to set up your rifle, how to shoot fast and a variety of techniques I'd never have thought of. In some of the camera shots from the barrel, you are looking back, into his eyes. You can see them move to the next target before you hear the bang from the shot being fired. The philosophy things he talks about in the interview session will get you thinking about a lot of your shooting. I think it's worth it and just the other day saw someone on here recommend it highly, but we'll have to hope some others chime in. I was mostly a gofer but Kay and I did rewrite scripts for the studio portion, on the fly, to make them suit Jerry's style better.

Not on YouTube but Brownells sells Jerry Miculek's Practical Rifle DVD - he covers positions, etc.

I think I want a new shotgun...

Get the 930 since you're a Mossberg guy. It's already in your head as the right choice and the game is mostly mental (as are the shooters). I tried a 930, couldn't get it short enough (most won't have that problem) and it felt like a 2x4 in my hands. I went back to my Benelli. M2 is lighter, feels livelier in the hands and doesn't fail me. -
Haven't used the Luth. Do have the TacMod and like it, a lot. It is heavy but I don't know the Luth's weight. Only problem I encountered was when combined with a JP side charge upper (so I could make use of the cheekpiece), I had to relieve a channel on the inside of the cheekpiece itself to allow the charging handle "guide" to move under it smoothly. I have the butt plate rotated a bit to fit MY shoulder pocket and it's collapsed all the way to match my short arms. I set it up to fit when prone and scrunch down into it for anything else. Very solid stock, adjusts every direction I needed. I'm old and slow but hit stuff at 300 to 350 in matches pretty well, with a 1X. At the local range, I've hit at 500 (more than once) and couldn't have done it without the TacMod. No hitches in installation.

Shotguns used in 3gun are starting to look ridiculous!
larry weeks replied to DocMedic's topic in Shotgun - Technical
I think my 21" Benelli with the 10 round RCI tube looks great because it runs and hits where I look. Love sticking that gun in the rack at the trap range, then sit back and listen as trap guys try to figure it out. Walked out of a field carrying it after getting skunked on a turkey hunt. Nosy local farmer stopped and asked "what the heck is that gun?" Then asked if I was a cop. -
I think Trapr was talking about our sight height correction formula: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=11181/GunTechdetail/Determine-Sight-Height Here's a link to the "fill in the blank" version to determine correct height: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=13186/GunTechdetail/Sight-Height-Calculator

Re-thinking rifle zero, Maximum Point Blank Range
larry weeks replied to Wild Gene's topic in Rifle - Technical
I've gone to a 300 yd zero, if I'd have known Kurt was doing so, I would have changed long ago. On targets from 100 to 200+, I just hold on the bottom of the target. Round is high and hits. Many of the targets used are only 10" and center hold could be chancy. I hold at the top of the target if it gets to 350-400. -
Is there any reason to get something other than an M2?

Love my Benny Hill M2. Tried a 930, couldn't get it short enough for me, went back to the M2 and vowed never to cheat again. -
What chest mounted shotgun shell caddy?
larry weeks replied to Dewberry's topic in Multi-gun Gear & Accessories
I have the carbon arms. Haven't lost a shell yet but my "run" is really slow. Have it set up to mount on belt or the vest, works great. Don't lose shells when prone either. -
Best hard case for air travel
larry weeks replied to Headworked's topic in Multi-gun Gear & Accessories
Disclaimer, I work for Brownells. I take the foam out of a Pelican case and put our 3-gun case inside. When I get there I leave the Pelican in the room and take the soft case to the range. Learned that from one of the top guys, don't remember who now, sorry. The Pelican 1750 works for our 48" case (084-000-324/-325) and the Pelican 1770 takes the 54" case (084-000-384/-385). My guns have survived a few flights with no problems. -
Benelli trigger group pin falling out

Thanks Tyro, I knew we had one, just couldn't remember the name. Trapr, got one coming from GunCat. Thanks! -
Mid-priced .223/5.56 "best all-around" 3-gun ammo?
larry weeks replied to dchang0's topic in Rifle - Technical
Hope this doesn't repeat, I think I hit a wrong button. I've had great luck using ASYM 75 gr for the longer range stuff. Hornady Tap 75 also shoots well. Both are around a buck a piece but if I can hit at 350 using my EOTech, I'll pay the price. XM 193 does fine out to 200 but by 400 group sizes double compared to the ASYM or Tap. -
Lately the trigger group pin in my Benelli has been slipping out, seemingly on it's own. Am I correct to assume I need a new trigger pin retaining spring? Since Brownells is out of stock, has anyone found a substitute?

MAC702: Wood grips on a 41, because everyone wants the Glock to be juuuussst a bit fatter, right?

Group shooting, even with a scope, is tough to do well. A benchrest guy spent some time with me and taught me a lot in just an hour. I shoot a 1X EOTech and use a pistol target with an 8" black bullseye at 100 yards. I try to center my dot in the black dot, you can also make a figure eight if the dot sizes match up. James Casanova just won overall (beat the scopes) at both Area 2 and Generation III Gun using a Prismatic. He, and other 1X shooters, hit the 16" 300 to 350 yard targets with 1X so it can be done. Just keep shooting, and stretching the distances. Yes, the target can look small, just relax and do the best you can, after just 100 rounds in a day or weekend you'll be lots more comfortable. KurtM teaches long range and shoots 1X, pay attention to what he says and see if you can get into one of his classes. Oh, and 1 MOA is roughly equivelant to 1" at 100 yards. That would be 2" at 200 and so on. If you can shoot 1.5 MOA, in match conditions, you'll be doing great.

When they do require buck it is almost always 9 pellet. I found some 1200 fps Federal, 9 pellet and have been using that.

The wood plug is what I did to get my required 12-3/4" length of pull. I fit them to the shape of the stock (roughly) roughed the stock up, drilled a couple of dimples and epoxied (Brownells Acraglas Gel) them in. Since epoxy doesn't stick very well to the polymer plastics, I drilled through from the outside and installed wood screws. Looks ugly, works great. Gunsmith friend saw it and said he'd have used pins. If I do it again I will use the original-style AR-15 firing pin retaining pins, and epoxy them in.

Changing barrels requires a vise block to hold the upper receiver, a barrel wrench and whatever tools are needed to remove the gas block. That might be punch and bench block or as simple as an allen wrench. You'll also, most likely, need a longer gas tube. Should be lots of youtube videos on the process. Brownells has the tools, if a buddy nearby doesn't.
