Prescott Valley, AZ

Recommended Posts

We might be looking to relocate in a few years if Oregon continues it's plunge down into the sewer and continues to constantly raise taxes. We are looking for a "gun friendly" state with a low tax burden, where we can afford a few acres to do some shooting, run our business, and raise a few kids. We prefer moderate temperatures and somewhere fairly close to some shooting and a major airport and that has a FedEx hub nearby (we ship lots of packages.) We are conservative, family values type folks and want to give our kids a safe place to grow up.

Any input would be greatly appreciated as my wife is fed-up with the way our state is headed and she found this Prescott Valley place and she thinks looks like a nice place to her.

I've been looking into that general area as a potential relocation for retirement. Prescott Valley is more flat deserty than Prescott itself. The higher altitude makes it less hot in the summer, yet gives it 4 seasons. The area has been traditionally a conservative region.

You need to shoot the Western States Single Stack, then go on a "fact finding tour". :D

Thanks Dan! I am shooting the WSSS and am planning on doing just that :)

My last post was for entertainment purposes only and not meant to denigrate Prescott and surrounding areas.

The Prescott area is a great place, I like it a lot. There are lots of nice places in Arizona, look around. Now is the time to buy if you can swing it.

I'm going to be out there for the match, and a week's vacation too. We're staying in Sedona for the week. Beautiful, but pricey.

Here's one site for the town.

There's a great shooting club in Prescott. The area is magnificent and even gets snow although not much.

Prescot Valley is about 80 miles north of Phoenis so it's a nice trip down to th evalley for some larger matches.

Lots of deer in the area, lots of antelope. If you are retired Military there is a VA hospital in Prescott.

If you want good deals on guns you are not far from J&G Sales in Prescott.

You can also make it to The Grand Canyon in about 2 hours. You are going to love it there.

I used to do some work in Prescott and wanted to move there, really nice area if you can afford it. I was living in Gilbert at the time and loved it. The Phoenix metro area is a great place to live if you find the right parts, but I digress and will get back to Prescott. Get out a little bit from Prescott to Cottonwood or somewhere like that and it gets a little bit more affordable. Payson is another area to look at, an hour and a half from just about anything you could want and was a true small town the last time I was there. I liked Payson better than Prescott but there isn't nearly as much work there. Get out a bit further to somewhere like Show Low or St John's and prices come down a lot, a true small town, nice weather, etc.

Thanks for the feedback all. The great thing about working for shooters for a living is FedEx makes us only a day away. We've talked some more about a move and are most likely going to look for a few acres somewhere that we can build on in the future. The area looks real nice, the wife hates the winters here and the area isn't that far from our friends down there.

You mean I have to FedEx my guns to you now? No more same-day service? No more access to the Bridgeport? Say it ain't so.

Well with direct flight to Pheonix now, I might be working up here 3-4 long days a week and flying down to visit my family in the winter. The new shop should be done by the time you get your butt back up here.

BTW, my wife found a new town in AZ, Springerville, up near the NM border. Anyone know the area? 4 hours from the city doesn't sound bad.

All things considers, Springerville is a better life style choice than Prescott Valley (Preskit). PV has grown way too much over the last 10 years and is dealing with traffic on the main roads. Only 2 roads into town, Hwy 69 (iirc) in from I-17 and the back road to Sedona. Water is also another issue, the aquifer under Prescott / Prescott Valley has been pumped way down. Prescott had to build a pipeline north to Chino Valley to suck all the water out of that aquifer. Water will be expensive. Land is expensive for Arizona, all the Californians moving over the last 10 years have driven prices up in that area. But, depending upon the prices in your area, you might not notice.

Springerville is a traffic stop town between Showlow and the N Mexico border. Used to work for a firearms academy that did rifle classes in NM, so spent a lot of time in Springerville. Very small town atmosphere, Mormon background, traditional small town and laid back, up on the Rim with pines nearby, so really scenic. There is an Apache casino fairly close if you have the periodic gambling urge and there is a ski resort not too far away. No night life, so to speak, but from my perspective of a place with no traffic and laid back, Springerville or nearby Showlow are great options.

Take my opinions with a grain of salt. I'm of the school here who feel that all the movement into Arizona from liberal bastions are changing AZ for the worse, especially the current migration into Phoenix from Los Angeles. I'll be gone in 2 - 3 years, so you're welcome to my spot as long as you have the right mindset.

My job has required me to travel all over AZ the last 18 months. From Kingman to Springerville. From Yuma to Douglass. Flagstaff to Bisbee

If I moved there, I'd stay north of Phoenix. Just because I like the higher elevations. Summers are still warm but not as bad.

I'd check out the I-40 corridor. Flagstaff is a very nice town. East and West you can find smaller towns if that is more your speed but can always take a trip to the big city if needed.

Now that it has turned to Springerville, in the same area, sorta, St Johns, Round Valley, Show Low, Pine top. And further north is Taylor . etc. Mention my name...but please don't tell them where I am... ..Later rdd

How about Washington? We're a nanny state, but without an income tax. :) And you can shop in Oregon without sales tax, not that we ever do that. ;)

We're a desert (at least where I live), but we have plenty of water (Yakima+Snake+Columbia). Want a few acres? No problem. Electricity is cheap here (Hydro, Nuke), probably compared to AZ.

FedEx, no problem. Port Authority cheap incubator space, no problem. Arts and Entertainment, OK leetle problem. We go to Portland and Seattle for that. :P

Plus we need you to show us how to shoot (I've shot with you).

Sounds like you can write your own ticket on where to live though, so maybe rural Washington can't compete.

Dr.

WA is a no go, they ban some of my more fun toys and not warm enough for the wife AND (this is the big one) I hear they are trying to ban lead bullets there :(

Thanks for the kind words though :)

Bubber,

Show low looks cheap and small, is the town decent?

Warp,

We liked Flagstaff, and I'm a fan of the trees.

I'd like to build a small range eventually too.

Yeah, we have to drive across the border (20 miles) to play with certain toys in Oregon. Course, that's closer than the regular range. But point taken.

Once they get us all herded into Az, what do you think they'll do with us? or :surprise:

Sorry, you should just get there while you can.
