38superman
Last night I had a long talk with my race gun. It went something like this: "Lately I've been thinking about shooting some matches with my single stack" "What"? "Yes it's true" "But Why?, ... we're good together and getting better all the time." "I know" "Don't I practically leap out of the Ghost holster and into your hand?" "You know you hate it when you bruise your armpit drawing that antique". "True" "Have I ever asked you to wear those stupid bifocal shooting glasses?" "No". "Do I make you drag around 600 pounds of ammo?" "No" "Don't I gobble up those high cap mags slick and easy?" "Yes" "Then why pray tell would you do this to me?". "Mostly just for grins, but let me ask you a question" "OK" "You are great for playing games, but if I ever have to shoot for real, will you be there?" (Silence) "Allright, you got me. Go and shoot the old girl and get it out of your system." "Just one thing". "What's that? "Don't let me get dusty." "Not a chance" Tls Edited February 21, 2008 by 38superman

AikiDale
38Superman has his head in the right place. But I would like to take this opportunity to speak up for that open blaster. It has at its heart the 1911. We would not have it if not for JMB's design. The internals are the same. And, though not generally suited for everyday urban concealed carry, a former Army Ranger, current LEO and USPSA, Steel and 3gun shooter answered this question on the range once. A shooter with a (pardon my language) Glock said "I guess those are okay, but I'd rather have this in a real fight." Our hero, speaking as a LEO, replied, "If I were going on a raid and knew there might be a gun fight I'd rather have my open gun than my Glock." An SSES chooses to compete with and perhaps carry good old slabsides. We should not I think disparage our popular cousin the 2011. Any SS shooter who achieves a higher hit factor on a stage than any other division shooter is however entitled and encouraged to smile with an air of superiority. Scout454
+1 Dale! More Dogma ETA: I'd shrunk this to use it as an avatar and it's too small. (Silence) Tls NOT here!! Give me my OPEN gun any day...Hell, they will think there are 3.9 of us.....(29+1 VS..8, 8, 8, 8) and for those of you who have seen me (LATELY) attempt to shoot iron sights you know I am right...... 38superman
No argument here DrawandDuck. If I knew I was going to be in a gun fight I would reach for my open blaster. (Although I probably would end up stone deaf if I took it into a firefight without the benefit of hearing protection). But the reality is I don't carry it. It lives in my range bag and stays at home except on match days. The gun I do carry is a Para P18.9 LDA. No dogma, just the facts. Tls
Scout454
Thanks Steve! Depending on the weather and where I'm going I carry: An old(er) Kimber Compact in .45ACP Another Kimber 5" in .45 ACP or (don't beat me Merlin!!!) An STI 2011 in - - .45CP Generally with 200 grain +P Federal Expanding Full Metal Jackets stuffed in the magazine. And I hunt with a .45 (70) or a .45 (90). DMS42
While a high cap race gun might be better in a fight I would still rather have my Single Stack .45 on my hip while I'm carrying my M1A in my hands. With it I can open fire at 1000 yards and if we are up close and personal those .30 caliber bullets will go through almost everything, except engine blocks, on their way to the target. 38superman
Now that my race gun has given permission for a menage et trois, I will definately be sporting a SS. Coming soon to a match near you. If I can drag out my camera, I will tender an official application for SSES. After all I do have 4, count 'em, 4!!! single stacks in my collection. Who better to occupy member #38 than the 38superman? Tony Edited February 21, 2008 by 38superman
Scout454
Yeah Tony - .2011 in .45. I bought it 'cause a bud gave me a hard time about not carrying a spare mag with my SS. This way all the BB's are in one package.
