Experience transitioning between a Glock and M&P?

I have been a dyed in the wool Glock man forever (say late 80's). On a whim I picked up a used M&P 9Ls from a buddy just for fun.

Needless to say I am hooked, so much so that I will be shooting a G22 for limited major, and the M&P for limited minor (both seem to fit my old Safariland 007, and mag carriers are interchangeable).

I like the feel of the Smith with the large backstrap, but need to find a medium to try- it didn't come with one (only a couple of smalls that don't work for me). It even shoots "better" (subjective I know) than a couple of G34's that I had tried in the past (installing an Apex competition trigger kit improved things even more).

Have many of you been drawn in like this?

I used a Glock 19 when I started shooting IDPA and quickly started lusting for a long slide.

Tried a G34 and was pretty content with the idea of getting one but wanted to try the M&P Pro 5" and XD 5.25 first.

Hated the feel of the XD (just like the other models I had shot at previous times) and absolutely fell in love with the M&P's ergonomics.

Was impressed more with the M&P upon shooting as it just shoots so soft with the low bore axis.

Upgraded the trigger to an Apex FSS and added Hogue Hand-all Hybrid and a SSS ESP mag well with Springer Precision base pads and couldn't be happier with the gun overall.

Only problem is that I started shooting USPSA Limited as well and don't like minor scoring so plan to get an M&P 40 Pro CORE to set up exactly the same other than going with extended magazine base pads.

Traded my G19 recently for a Shield and previously traded a Beretta 92fs for an M&P 9c so the family is growing and I love every member of it.

Same story. Glocks since 86, mostly 19, last year got a 5" pro and just a couple 9f months ago a 9c to replace my 27 for edc. Ergos better, not blocky and triggers pretty good w apex parts.

This is the direction I am concerned that I may be headed..... I may end up a total convert.

The Apex Trigger Kit makes the pistol twice as good.

Most definitely made a difference, I was quite impressed with what a few parts and springs accomplished in what appears to be a somewhat complicated mechanism.

I cut my teeth shooting LE "division" over 20 years ago between a G17 and a 1911. Then I got deeper and deeper into the high tech tactical tupperware.

Now I am so deep into Gaston's stuff (like a ton of mags, spare parts, etc), than I don't necessarily want to get out of it for fear of losing my assets! For 20+ years my carry piece has been a Glock of some sort (until the Kel Tec PF9 came along), and my esposa totally digs her G26 and G42.

Times may be a changing though....

My personal story reflects that of other M&P converts hereabouts. I owned and carried three different 9mm Glocks before settling on M&P Pros for carry and competition. More 1911ish grip to bore angle (thitherto I had competed with Bul M5s and CZs), a trigger that was easier to reach without toughing the frame or trigger guard, an easier to manipulate mag catch and slide stop, generalized less Teutonic Squareness and a reasonably heavy guide rod assembly for decent recoil recovery. The M&P Pro's stock trigger is nicer than that of a Glock, and once modifications are permitted, the Apex is terribly nice (haven't tried a Vanek or Fulcrum trigger, just a 3.5" connector). I also enjoy the consistent "mag insertion releases slide" design.

That said, it's apples and oranges really. Whatever fits our hands better. I find Glocks slightly easier to carry concealed in a SmartCarry groin holster, on the account of Block beaverrumps not digging into the suprapubic abdominal region like the long beavertails of the M&P, and accessorizing Glocks is a cinch here: carbine conversion kits, holsters, sights of every kind and small kitchen sinks.

So I am obviously one of many that have found the M&P to their liking. I must admit (IMHO) that the ergonomics are superior to Glock. Now I just have to spend a bit of time behind the Smith to see if becoming a full convert to the order of S&W is in my future.

Other than the trigger work the only other mods I could see doing would be trying a different mag catch, and adding a mag well (besides the TF mag extensions I have already added). Thought I had a line on a medium back strap here, but that doesn't appear to have panned out. In this case eBay may be my friend.

If you want a MEDIUM grip insert. I'd suggest you post a "Want To Trade" offer on a couple of relevant forums. I traded a couple of SMALL for MEDIUM just recently. There are lots of ex-police guns being sold right now with random inserts, so you are sure to find someone interested in trading.

I have a trigger job and that is it. Ours are all production legal except mag extensions for 3Gun.

If I decide to go the production route I will pull out the G17 I have. Or just go get a standard M&P9 (kind of goes along with the conversion to the order of S&W). ;)

It appears the member that contacted me a couple of days back is searching for the one he suggested a trade for. That, and the one I bid for on eBay could be the start of a new spare parts obsession.

www.apextactical.com will be on your favorites list, as it should be.

That it is, I have been looking at that site as well as several others that are in the vendor tent here.

Not so much drawn in but failed to be drawn out :).

My Production gun is a S&W M&P 9L. FWIW I use the small backstrap (I have small hands) and the gun fits me very, very well. I also have a Gen 2 Glock 17 that I shoot GSSF with (and I've shot a few USPSA matches with for grins). For whatever reason though I just don't shoot the Glock nearly as good. I think it may be my hand size and the grip it has. I'm thinking of selling the one I have and buying a Gen4 instead. The smaller backstrap it has may help out a little there.

Quite an interesting way to put it.

I myself still have a Gen 3 G17 along with my G22 that I intend to use for Limited/Major. I once had a Gen 4 G26 that seemed to fit my hand better with one of the more curved back strap adapters (probably should have kept that one), so I understand how that particular generation of Glock pistol can be a bit more desirable.

If I find myself doing noticeably better with the M&P I will be having to decide if I go all in, or stick it out with what I have now.

Same boat here. I started off as a glock shooter (g22 and 34) for 3gun and limited respectivley. I worked at an over-priced big box hunting store that shall remain nameless at the time the M&Ps came out and after holding one, I had to have one. So, I waited and bought a 5" pro .40. As others said, Apex and Speed Shooters Specialties will become your favorite websites. I hope I don't start a riot witht his one, but I prefer the Apex FSS in an m&p over a ZEV in a glock any day of the week. Disclaimer: I carry a glock 19 daily.

I got back into shooting Pistols last year. Looking to get into IPDA and USPSA Prod. I got a XDM 5.25 9mm. it shot very well. I wanted something for carry, and got a Glock gen4 17 added TTI sights and TTI 3.25 lb conector kit. The 17 shot better than the XDM, it stayed on target better due to the lower bore axis. So I started looking for a new Comp. gun. I was looking to got to one platform. I could go with a Glock 34 and share mags with the 17. The gen4 34 in my area cost $650 and would need sights, that would cost $100.00. I started at the Pro, it cost $590.00 and comes with good sights, that would save me $150. I got the Pro and loved it. The Pro trigger has a better feel than the Glock with the 3.25 conector. I had found my platform. I traded the XDM for another 9mm Pro and traded the 17 for a Sheild 9mm. The XDM and Glock 17 are great guns and worked 100%, but the M&P Pro fits me better, and I shoot them better.
