Before you start working on the gun;

You will need moonclips: plastic, Rimz

Or steel

http://www.revolversupply.com/documents/moon_clips.html

And a moonclip loader (spectacular product, I have two, one each for my 610 and PC 627)

http://www.bmtequipped.com/products.php

And a moon clip holder:

Or

Grips: my JM grips do not absorb enough for my taste. JM has big hands and strong forearms and I don't

Model 500 Houg recoil reducer

Extended Firing pin:

Finally and most importantly Sights: FRONT AND REAR FIBER OPTIC SIGHTS (I have two sets my 617, 610 and am now ordering for my 627, they really are outstanding)

http://www.cylinder-slide.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=CS0358SET

The rest you have a good idea. Shoot 500 dry fire, 500 live then do your trigger job by a gunsmith.

Have fun !

I might be strange but I did the trigger work first thing. Wolf reduced power main and rebound, polishing, chamfered the chambers and that about did it. Got a nice real smooth 7lb pull that I'm happy with. Lights off Federals no problem. I kept the partridge sights and I'm fine with it. I use the Hogue rubber grips. Then just shoot away!

Curious, why REAR FO's?

no fiber rears for me either, too distracting. The front fiber is for locating the front sight then aligning the sights with the rears. Three red dots would make it confusing.

Congratulations on taking the plunge into revolver shooting.

Most of the other posts tell all that should be done to get you started. I have big hands and a strong grip but I had to remove the Miculek grips as they were small and painful. Hogues are good but I got the S&W 500 to pad the web of my hand.

I built PPC guns back in the 70's and 80's for a lot of the guys in NY. Most everyone wanted a bobbed hammer but I never found a really good reason to do so. Hammer speed when falling? Maybe. When the mainspring is lightened, I found having hammer mass (weight) was of more benefit for reliable ignition. Personal choice I guess.

Should be at the Dec. 20th match at the Antelope. See you then.

BTW, you are the "Ice Man" right?

Cylinder chamfer is kind of a biggie, I would recommend it just to cut the frustration level. Nothing wrong with doing it yourself, you can either be careful with a dremel or obsessive with sandpaper. If you go the sandpaper route start with something like 80, roll it into a wide cone, then turn that cone in the cylinders. Finish with 200 or so and you'll have a good reload going, it doesn't take much.

Fiber optics on the front and rear sights is all a question of how fast and accurate do you want your revolver. When I shoot my PPC using my aristocrats sights on my model 686 I have a black front and rear sight in that this is not urgent, we should have enough time before the end of the whistle.

When I shoot IPSC Time is urgent and acquiring a fast shooting picture more accurate if I have two red fiber-optics in the rear sight and one bright green fiber-optic in the front. I have found this to be a very significant improvement over black front and rear sights. Rear fiber optic sights are relatively new in the industry and I am confident they will become much more excepted as time goes on.

I recently jumped into revo as well and as you, started with a 625 JM. I shot it in a match first thing...wow, did that trigger need some work. I'm now just a shade under 6.5lb and it lights off Federal primers just fine. I chamfered the cylinders (then take some of the sharpness off the star or you may find yourself bleeding on a reload!). I put in an extended firing pin, whacked the spur, shined some surfaces, put an extended Hogue cylinder release, installed the Miculek spring set, and finally installed a Hogue BigButt grip. You'll *really* like it once you do something close to the above.

I ran into a problem since I bent one of the springs but other than that, its worked out GREAT! You can see my thread here ==> http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=140263

  • 2 weeks later...

i took my new unmodified 625 jm to its first

match and it had to shoot 2 of the steel knock

downs twice.then it ran out of ammo for the last

paper target.took it to its second match and it

forgot to shoot 2 rounds on one of the paper and

got charged with a miss.other than that it was

fast and accurate.i think we just need to get

further aquainted.. shoot it , shoot it , shoot it

and have fun.

Green front, red rear: no confusion. Fiber optics rule.
