Pushing AutoComp

Just curious, if 7.1ish gr of AC at 1.175 behind a 124/125g jhp gives 170-171 PF.... who has pushed it a little... I'm looking for 178ish PF just to look at how the dot functions?

Thanks and let me know if you've pushed it a little and where you stopped/ended up.

What is the dot like when you shoot it? Does it stay in the glass? Any side to side motion? I'm really thinking about trying auto comp as it's a good bit cheaper than my normal load of VV N105 (at about $30 per lb, there isn't too many that are more expensive!).

the dot stays in the glass, and it shoots nice, i had some around because my wife shoots it in her limited gun, i looked at n350, but at $38 a lb. i can almost get 2 lbs of AC for that.

I've shot N105 and AutoComp. The cheap version of N105 is AA#7 and as everyone will tell you it is chunky dirty, I shoot it in my 38 Super and have also run it in 9 major. The next best thing I have found is Silhouette. You might get enough gas with AutoComp by going to a 115gr bullet. AA#7 has a tick more flip and a tick less straight back than N105, Silhouette is just a tick more of both, and AutoComp is border line violent, well not that bad but the dot movment on my guns was jerky more straight back and more end of cycle flip that is where the jerky comes from.

Well, Coco, I may just have to try Autocomp then, as I use MG 115 JHP's anyway!

well for a little input, we did chrono our loads today. this is in preparation for Golden Bullet 2010 here at northern CA, 8.0gr of autocomp behind 124gr MG JHP, OAL at around 1.165-1.170" (not my load, one of the shooters) and its coming out to 1580+ FPS, way too hot, we ask him how it shot (Limcat turbocomp, full size) he said it feels like the same as borderline major load of N340. from my point of view it was LOUD, and has more shake than flip. again, i was just a spectator.

there was one shooter who was using n350, he really liked it, consistent FPS, and from my point of view, his was FLAT. i was watching shooters attentively during classifiers on weak hand only, his was flat. BUT, personally i had only experienced Autocomp, 7.2 and 7.4gr, 7.2gr made major PF, felt recoil was better than 7.4gr (limcat turbocomp, fullsize, 1.168" OAL, 0.355 crimp, 124/125 MG JHP).

Cocobolo (Ron) advised me to try Silhouette, i have 1lb to try on. ill post my results when i get time.

9x23 win brass, win sm rifle primer, 1.125OAL, 7.25gr autocomp gave me a 169.4 PF at area 5.

I run 7.2 with 9x19 out of the same gun, OAL 1.118, don't have a solid PF yet but gun feels about the same. Dot stays in the lens, gun stays fairly clean. and I don't get a lot of powder spillage due to the density of the powder.

I really hope that comment is 1.180 and not 1.118 (wicked short for 9mm).

I was looking for those running more than 7.2... I run 7.1-7.2 all day long, but in a 5" gun (no holes), that's about 172pf and I was looking for a bit more gas... gonna try some 7.25, 7.3 and 7.35 to see what happens. Also going to try some 115's...

We shall see...

Gents, please indicate the caliber your load is used for. Sometimes the 9mm/38 caliber stuff sort of blends. Know what I mean? We really need to split the two but... Anyway, I don't want to blow the little general off.

Here's what I came up with 115's in 9mm...

Ok, here's what I came up with... all done in once or twice fired Winchester brass, MG 115's at 1.175" +/- .001"

You know the gun I worked this data up with Chris... ;)

7.6 grains got me an average of 1414 fps with wicked high (44) SD's. I'm not sure what the deal was there but I sure didn't like it.

7.8 went 1485 with a 10 SD (not cool) for 170.8

8.0 went 1509 with a 14 SD (getting worse, lol) for 173.5

8.2 went 1544 with a 12 SD for 177.6

The powder seemed happiest in the low 180's PF wise...

8.4 went 1568 with a 3 SD (finally!) for 180.3 PF

8.6 went 1594 with a 3 for 183.3 and

8.8 went 1629 with an 11 (ick) for 187.3

I shot 8.1 at Area 6 which went 1539, 1525, 1539 for an average of 1534 and 176.8 PF which is right where it should have been.

I know you didn't ask for my impression of the powder but here it is anyway...

I was in a bind for powder before A6 and borrowed a pound of it. It's wicked harsh and doesn't work the comp (Brazos Thundercomp 2) worth a darn to me. Dot tracking isn't bad, mostly straight up and down but I can't keep the dot in the lens. The gun is flippy. I have 3M stair tread tape on the right side of my gun (I'm a lefty, right side is support hand) and it chewed my hand up bad just playing with a loose-ish grip to check the dot track. I've never had that happen before. Longshot, #7 or Silhouette are much nicer IMO. The dot stays in the lens and it's straight up and down, not just mostly.

Ten shot strings out of a full size gun with no barrel holes. The powders I used were HS-6 and AutoComp seated with MG 124gr JHP and WSP loaded to 1.170.

HS-6

Avg velocity. PF

7.9 1358.5 168.5

8.1 1391.3 172.5

8.3 1492.6 185.1

AutoComp

6.8 1367.3 169.5

6.9 1380.5 171.2

7.0 1401.7 173.8

Edit to add: loads are for 9 major

My bad

should have read 1.18 for COL for the 9x19.

My 9x23 went 172.4 last weekend may be heat related??

Just got a new CED M2 chrono. It seems to show lower velocities than my Chrony, but I haven't actually tested them side-by-side. Anyway, here is some recent data from my open gun, 9x19, full size, Storm Lake barrel, EGW comp, no holes, 10 shot strings, 82 degrees F.

121 MG IFP/7.5 Autocomp/1.190/Crimp 0.376/Wolf SR: AV=1387/ES=34/SD=12.4/PF=167.8

121 MG IFP/7.7 Autocomp/1.190/Crimp 0.376/Wolf SR: AV=1430/ES=65/SD=15.3/PF=173

121 MG IFP/10.6 AA-7/1.190/Crimp 0.376/Wolf SR: AV=1427/ES=20/SD=6/PF=172.7

121 MG IFP/10.8 AA-7/1.190/Crimp 0.376/Wolf SR: AV=1462/ES=34/SD=10/PF=177

I think I'm going to spend some more time with the AA-7 loads.

+1 on AutoComp being harsh. I agree that Silhouette is less voilent, that is what I'm currently using. AA#7 if you can load it out to 1.185-1.190 makes a nice load with 10gr of AA#7 & a 125 Zero, sloppy to load and dirty but soft and sweet. I also run the Brazos ThunderComp 2 with no holes on a 4.25" shorty.

Talking about pushing Autocomp; I just picked up 8lbs and did my research on BE for a good starting load. Thought I had a good starting load and when I chrono'd yesterday I was at 187-188 pf!! The good thing was the primers did not show excess pressure signs. The load actually felt pretty good and the gun was pretty flat. Bad thing was it was 187-188pf. Measure when I got home and I was at 7.8 (9mm) averaging over 1500 fps. I like this powder a lot when I did my blind test.

Paul,

That's good news in a way, at least we know it's stable at those pressures... back off to 7.2 and start again, I'm betting 7.2 will put you right in the ballpark.

7.25gr Autocomp, 1.185 OAL, 124 MGD CMJ works great in my 9 major gun.

Like CocoBolo I have used both Silhouette and AA7 loads extensively. I like AA7 the best, but IMHO....Autocomp and Silhouette are both pretty close in feel and dot movement. I am sticking with Autocomp for now due to cleanliness. AA7 leaves a lot of residue that I thought was causing feeding problems (actually mag and extractor problems). I will probably return to AA7 (10.2gr, all else same as Autocomp) after the Nationals.

so after 1lb of AC, side by side comparison to Silhouette, i prefer silhouette, it has a lesser kick on the slide.

FS, Limcat Turbocomp, 9lb recoil

Autocomp: 7.2gr, 1.168" OAL, 124gr MG JHP, WSPP

Silhouette: 7.9gr 1.168" OAL, 124gr MG JHP, WSPP

I have shot a lot of 9 Major with Sil and 38SC with Sil, My favorite 9 Major load with a 5 inch Brazo SX comp is 121 IFP with Sil. No holes.

The following data is with Autocomp and 38 SC. I have not shot a match yet with Autocomp, but my first thoughts are SIl and Autocomp are about the same with Sil having a slight edge in how the gun feels. Autocomp takes less powder to achieve the same PF. My current gun is a 5 inch with 4 popple holes Brazo Pro Sx comp.

125gn Zero 38SC new starline brass and WSR primers OAL 1.232

7,9 1385 for 10 shots SD 10.7 PF 173.125

8.0 1398 SD 3.5 PF 174.625 38SC

8.1 1421 SD 5 PF 177.625 38SC

Primers were showing pressure signs, but I seen the same primers with 115 gn with other powders.

My favorite powder for my gun is 3N38. Shoots flat and soft, but is expensive. I have tried N105, AA#7 and was not impressed with them in my gun.
