  1. I run Federal Walmart bulk box, or Remington bulk box. Lately I've been using Nobel Sport (orange hull). All of the loads are #8.
  2. Perhaps a rifle mag length gage will be in order soon. "Tactical division: Double column mags that fit the gage." I don't mind having to do mag changes in a stage, if everyone in the division has to do them there is no disadvantage. For my battle rifle, the SF mags will be awesome. I wonder how long it takes for them to have an NSN?
  3. Single vs two stage is personal preference. I don't like two stage triggers in a run'n'gun rifle. I had a really nice 4lbs trigger using milspec parts and JP springs, then eventually swapped out for the JP kit. I like the shorter reset with single stage set ups. If you can assemble a lower from scratch, you should be albe to install the JP kit and set it up. There are also drop in "boxes" available to. I've wanted to try them but they cost twice as much as I spent.
  4. Well I guess that saves me $130 then. I'm not against a 30 round mag cap for Tactical either. I don't like the length of Nordic extened Pmag and figured the Sure fire would be perfect. Thanks for the info.
  5. Did I miss something regarding rules and monopoding? Are the rules being changed to eliminate the use of these mags or something?
  6. Bitter Root Valley Ammo: I've been shooting their 52gr ammo for a while now. Good stuff, and I'll be shooting that ammo at the match.
  7. I live in a developed neighborhood, about 100m from the corner (all housing streets with no center line). One afternoon I heard somebody make the turn onto my road and hammer the gas. He was wide open until after he passed my house. He was going at least 55 in my 25mph neighborhood. As soon as I heard him nail the gas I started looking for anything to throw at his car but he went by too fast. I need to inquire about speed bumps.
  8. I have a hard time pressing the latch enough to kick out the shell quickly. The last round (1st in) is the worst. Horner warned against doing that as it wears the leaf spring on the Benelli. He was using an FN by then and the FN has a coil spring that last longer so it was OK do unload the FN that way. Still can only load 8 at a time. I know it won't be for everyone since you have to swap tubes, but for me, I'll use the hell out of it.
  9. Yeah, that Thompson replica was going cyclic on the first two attempts at test fire. It wasn't until the 3rd or so attempt (shown) that he finally mentioned it was running away. Could be the editing. The flare gun thing did bother me too. Don't try to BS the viewers. Discovery said that show has 15 MILLION viewers makeing it one of their most popular shows. Ugh. The sword thing was...well just sad. The Bazooka was an amuzing rocket launcher but at least it was supposed to be fake. Watching Kris use a hand drill trying to make a precision, partial depth hole was like watching a car park across a R/R crossing with flashing lights. I give them credit for somehow selling the idea for a show to Discovery. I do want to see more gun friendly shows on tv. I just hope this one doesn't back fire on the pro-gun movement.
  10. That was my first idea actually. Would be the cheapest. The goal is to be able to load 20 shells at a time without stopping. 5 shell carriers worth. As long as the finger was long enough and tight enough to offer enough resistance it could work.
  11. My idea was to be able to load 20 shells at a time without stopping. I'm drawing it up now.
  12. One of the things that makes reload practice take so long is unloading it. I like to do dry fire at night once the kids go to bed and shucking the rounds out by cycling the action is a tad loud. Here is an idea for a dry fire device. I didn't think of it but was privy to some converstions about it. Replace the mag tube with a dry fire specific tube that allowed the rounds to eject out of it. The trick is to mimic the spring tension of the follower. Taking the mag extension tube off and just putting rounds into the factory short tube is OK but you don't have to overcome the mag spring tension to load. I have a few ideas on how to make this work. What I would love to be able to do is load 4, then as I loaded the second 4, the first four are ejected from the mag tube. Then I could just keep loading and loading until my fingers bled. Would anyone else be willing to replace the mag tube with a dry fire tube to enable faster dry fire practice? I would mount the tube up after a match while I'm cleaning it, then leave it in place until before the next match. It would sit in my safe ready for practice any time I wanted to. In 20 minutes I could load twice as much if I didn't have to unload it each time.
  13. You could always tune it disengage by merely looking at it. I have to have the safety disengage in less than 1/16" of travel or I won't get it 100% of the time. Combine that with lightening the spring tension and it will still work, but won't take hardly any effort to activate. Either that, or completely eliminate it (competition).
  14. My Nodic clamp moves too. I've tried many things as well. Adding anything under the clamp, tape, loctite etc, changes the spacing between the tube and barrel. I could watch the barrel move as I attached the clamp. Carbon Fiber is more porus than steel but I'm curious about this stuff. I may just machine a very shallow groove in my mag tube and call it done.
  15. I voted for what I've built. DSA FAL. I built it to be light and fast to manuever. Recoil is mild for a .308 and it runs and runs and runs. 30 rounders can be had but are heavy when loaded. Folding charging handle for 'slung on the back' comfort. It had a collapsable buttstock but it wasn't comfortable to shoot and the steel lower adds weight. Switched to aluminum lower and CTR stock for better cheek position and lighter weight. Not the cheapest option in my configuration though. Lighter than an AR10, less recoil than an HK91.
  16. You can use cut rubber inner tube and wrap somewhere around the tube. Acts to dampen the tuning fork. Or, just keep your off hand on the tube. I have a long browning type flash hider on my FAL and I use a high temp O-ring on the end to reduce the PING I get with every shot.
  17. Years of riding in fixed and rotary wing aircraft, shooting tons of Sam's bullets, now shooting my own bullets....my hearing is still very very good except in one small frequency range. I do have a slight bit of Tinitis, but when I was active duty there was a huge deal made about using hearing protection. My ears are sensitive so I double plug when shooting rifles and when shooting indoors. Work requires yearly testing and my tests are identical over the past 4 years. I use custom molded plugs with filter and double up with -32db muffs when needed. DON'T use electronic muffs indoors!! Unless you are using them secondary to plugs, or you turn them off. There is a second pressure wave that will hit you right after the muffs cycle back on.
  18. Had rooms booked a month ago. If I don't make it in, I know where you can stay.....
  19. I grew up in Tucson and would move back if the job market wasn't crap there. The Kart track outside of Tucson rents 125cc shifter karts if you need to raise your heart rate above 250. 4 wheel drifts in 3rd gear, wide open, with your butt 2 inches off the ground will get your attention. Anyway... Kentucky has some of the gun friendly-est laws I've encountered. I grew up were a 16 y/o could open carry a G19 without parental consent. Even still, KY impresses me. Besides...then there's the Bourbon! Close proximity to many matches. Rock Castle is 2 hours from my house, or the same as driving from Tucson to Phoenix in traffic. It snows, but usually just enough to remind you how fun it is to drift on snow covered roads (re: first paragraph).
  20. The movie trailer was the heat. Felt like I was watching the trailer to the next big block buster movie.
  21. I use the DPMS, because I couldn't find an LMT for the same price at the time. I wanted to run a non NM rear sight to keep the gross elevation adjustments for range.
