  1. If that's your main mistake your first match, you're doing fine. Safety is all you need the first few months....Then worry about performance. Welcome to the addiction. It gets much better with the mental blips.
  2. Think in terms of how it will improve your units readiness and mission accomplishment. You need to be able to sell the command on the benefits. Try to highlight what shooting civilian matches will bring that your standard 101'st schools and SOP's don't teach. What type of unit is it?
  3. Anyone make a full length 1911 frame with full length dust cover? Looking for stainless or forged. Checked out fusion but have heard bad things about their CS. So checking out my other options. Thanks. Square framed would be great but light rail would be fine as well.
  4. You can always look at your barrel around the link after 500 rounds or so. If it is beat up, you either need a stiffer spring or a shock buff...
  5. Anyone working SS nationals? I got confirmation but haven't heard whether I need to get a hotel partner or they provide one or when arrival is, etc. Anyone hear anything.
  6. I have been using Dawson's on both my guns with great success. Usually the TGO is the only "big" alternative.
  7. I have used the tripp corey mags and tripp cobra 10mm mags with my .40 1911. Both feed and function perfectly with 8 rounds. I wouldn't trust them at all with 9 rounds in them. It may be a .40 issue but the second round slides forward when you load 9 in the mag and always nosedives and fails to feed. If I want 9 in the magazine, I always barney one, and then load another after verifying the top round hasn't slid forward. Not sure if this is an issue when loading long but at 1.180 in .40, it has been for me in two different 1911's.
  8. I would be willing to bet no one notices until you put it in the box....
  9. Sqaud size is usually 12-18. That leaves 7-12 people to paste. If it's a big stage, I will help reset closer to my turn. For myself, it's really easy to help with everything at the expense of my shooting. Eventually you have to find a balance.
  10. Dry fire 5 times a week, shoot 4 matches a month. Made C class in Single stack at month two. Switched to limited and made A class by month 4. Switched back to single stack and made A by month 5. Not bad for 5 months of competitive shooting. I did grow up shooting for fun though. So the fundamentals were not as hard for me to learn. I was live firing 3-5 times a month beyond matches. My goal now is just to be competitive in A class. Making the class was great, but I want to be middle to top of the pack consistently. I'm really digging that chalkboard!
  11. I was always taught +4 or Deep hole. Basically when you are 4 away from shooting, you focus only on the stage or shooting. No pasting or resetting. I try to always follow this. Some clubs do 2 away but that is really hard for me to do as a newb. Let the match go. Go practice and do something fairly easy that builds confidence again. Then do well at the next match. A bad match can break you real quick. Just try and see what you can practice to make better and then keep having fun.
  12. Anyone going to show up to SS nationals with a 5.4? I'm tempted to, just to see how it goes. I don't see myself winning anything so worst case I switch to my backup gun and shoot for fun.
  13. Had a similar issue with mine being extremely hard to rack. Ended up being the hammer spring binding. Seems mainsprings aren't all the same size I found out. Replaced and it got noticeably smoother. Just something else for you to check. Does the slide and frame go together smoothly without barrel and mainspring?
  14. I always start low but didn't want others starting that high and not liking the results. I may experiment with some clays and these 165's here shortly. I'm not sure it can get much softer but who knows. I am shooting out of a 1911 so I can load a little longer then some can.
  15. One of the many reasons I don't pick up brass until after the match is over....Even if it means losing it.
  16. This video drives home a point I was taught two weeks. It was my first time RO'ing most of a squad. There was a vision barrier on the stage so I counted heads and called out as a double check. The range master said hold up and walked downrange anyways. Looks like he made the right call after seeing this video. I will always check now as the RO and I always look downrange and around before beginning a string.
  17. We start at 10 and finish around 3. That is 15 shooters per squad with 7 stages. Most are field stages with 1 or 2 speed shoots. When I squad with the regulars, we can finish an hour before everyone else even with 20 instead of 15 on a squad. The more people per squad and the more new people, the longer it takes in my part of the woods.
  18. You don't want any movement when in battery. Any movement is going to hurt accuracy. How much is another topic all together. I would shoot it and if the accuracy works for you, then leave it alone. I would be saving for a new barrel fitting though.
  19. 2.6 grains with 165's for me. Haven't messed with the 115's I have since the 165 was so soft
  20. I tried walnut last night for two hours. Worked pretty well with polish but not much better then just a new factory polished mag. I didn't try stainless because I'm pretty sure it is going to be a pretty satin finish instead of polished. I might experiment after next match. I think sandpaper and a bigger is the way to go. I'm going to use the walnut to polish the insides every few months or when I get new mags. Otherwise I'll just leave them alone.
  21. I threw them in the tumbler. WIll see how it works. Working up to 2000 grit sandpaper and then polish will be my next step. Thanks for the help guys. Was hoping it would be a simple throw them in the tumbler monthly but oh well.
  22. I use stainless pins currently. I have walnut though. Think that would work pretty well or should I try corn cob?
  23. You can spend 2500 for a complete setup one. Still crazy expensive though.
