  1. Heh. Just got off the phone with Ellie at Caspian. They are back ordered on the 140mm mags so she is sending me the 170s for the same price. Order will ship today. Can't wait.
  2. Richard Heinie Cal Foster And let's not forget Jim Clark, who pretty much invented the modern Compensator.
  3. I just hope Jerry Miculek never retires to become eligible. He's my second biggest inspiration.
  4. Why not just get them straight from Caspian and save yourself a few bucks? http://www.caspianarmsltd.com/
  5. Looks like the Quick change mags are 140s and I think in my case that should be enough. I may get some longer ones to experiment with eventually, but for right now I think 21 rounds each will be plenty. Most stages will require one change either way and I really can't see where the 6 extra will help on more than one or two stages a match. Frames for both guns should be here within a week and the slide for the 38 as well. Will prob'ly send it off to Gans for some slide lightening and maybe mill the rear to mount a Delta Point directly to the slide without a Novak adapter. Meanwhile, almost everything is here for the 45 so that will keep me busy for a while.
  6. Then your best bet is Caspian. But in my opinion Caspian is always the best bet.
  7. My Caspian has no grips on it, per se. It comes with a die cut grip-tape wrap that goes all the way around. I am so far finding it very comfortable, though different from my single stacks. You can get a very thin wooden grip from Caspian that, as I understand screws straight into the frame with no bushings. BTW: width is 1.060 for the grip frame. about 1.10 with grip tape.
  8. I was going to put a Burris FF3 on my new build until I saw this. Now, I'm definitely going with the DP. Yes it will be slide mount. Here's the thing for me: I see a lot of you talking about dot movement. Understand I have never put on optical sight on a 1911. Always shot iron sights. I have shot 1911s exclusively (as far as autopistols go) for 30 yrs. It indexes very well for me. So when I shoot, I'm looking at the target. I look at the sights only to confirm my aim before I squeeze off the shot. At that point the sights jump. No big deal. I'm looking at the next target unless I was foolish enough to squeeze the shot before I knew it was on target and I will know and remain on that target. The sight, or dot, moving means nothing to me. By the time the gun cycles and the sights are back where I need them I am already on target. Check the sights to confirm POI and squeeze the shot. I have always done well like that. If I am focused on the dot enough to see whether it moves or not, then I'm not looking at the target. The target is more important to me. That being said, I have shot other peoples guns with C-mores and other optics. I still lose the dot when the shot goes off. No big deal, it's where I need it when I'm ready for the next shot. What I don't like about C-more and others, especially frame mounted is that they take up too much of my line of sight to the target. These small slide mounted units don't look like the base takes up more space than a Novak Lo-mount and the frame around the optic is thin enough not to get in the way. So it moves with the slide. I don't care. As long as it is in front of my eye to confirm I'm on target, that's all I ask. For years I have said about coffee, "I like it how I like my women. Uncomplicated by additives." Same goes for sights.
  9. Get a threaded comp, set it up and then have it welded to the barrel. Now it's not threaded, it's a permanent fixture.
  10. Nice! A few features I wouldn't do, but that's me. Nice looking piece.
  11. Bookmarked and I will keep them in mind, but it appears that they have simply welded two mags together. And the video states that the baseplate is welded??? I think I would rather count on 22 I can trust than 28 that "maybe" I can.
  12. I usually have a few spare parts like springs, disconnector and firing pin, but I don't usually have an honest workable spare gun. I could theoretically us my .45 as a back-up for an open gun but as a single stack it would be a waste of time. I have shot steel with it so it could be a back-up for that, I suppose. Just not a very good one. I could use the .38SC I'm building for bowling pins but it would be seriously ineffective. I am, however building a new pin gun so the old .45 would be a backup. But the real key is to make sure your primary gun is as reliable as possible. If you are serious enough about shooting matches to have a backup, you should be serious enough that if you have any doubts about a part, replace it.
  13. The 45 is dual purpose. It will be a carry piece (if I ever decide I need to) with Clark Match barrel and a bowling pin gun with the comp and a different recoil spring. And, yes, the 38 is an open gun. As far as I know, no one make mags for the Caspian wide frame but Caspian and they only make 2 versions. A tactical that holds 18, and a Quick Change that holds 21. I ordered 2 quick change with the frame and slide and will order 3 more when I get it shootable. I figure if I can't complete a USPSA stage in 100 rounds, I got no business on the firing line. So as far as longer mags, looks like my only option is to get two and cut&weld.
  14. One of my neighbors moved out on thurs but, unbeknownst to me, he had a package coming by UPS so he called UPS to have them deliver the package to his new address. But apparently the UPS rep wasn't paying attention, saw my package with a similar address and re-routed it instead. So this morning I get up and check the UPS tracking site and it says my package was delivered Friday. I call them and they tell me it was delivered to this guys new address. Now, understand, Someone walked into my apartment on Weds morning, while I was in the laundry room. They took my debit and credit cards. So at this point, I'm thinking this guy stole my cards and got the tracking number I had written down and re-routed my parts. Called the cops and the same one that had been here weds came back. Between the two of us we worked out what really happened but it took 5 hours of phone calls to UPS, The apartment complex mgr, the ex-neighbor, the police in the jurisdiction the ex-neighbor moved to sort it out. I was spitting nails the entire time and more than once asked the cop to let me just go down there and shoot the bastard. It turned out to be entirely UPS's fault. Not the first time by far. But I learned something valuable too. If you have the tracking number, and that is ALL you need, you can call UPS and have a package re-routed to an entirely different name and address and they do not even attempt to verify that you are the legitimate recipient. I swear by all the gods you can name and some you never heard of I will NEVER, EVER trust UPS with a package again.
  15. After more than 5 hours of dealing with UPS and the police, I finally got one of several packages I have been waiting for. Parts for my new .45 build. Still waiting on the frame from Caspian and a few small parts, and I will be ordering a pair of Clark barrels, one compensated, one not. Also received some of the parts for my .38SC build, but the frame and slide, also Caspian, are still a few weeks out. I'll post updates on both builds as I go.
  16. But... But.... Their all ASSEMBLED! What fun is that? I'm actually awaiting delivery of half a dozen boxes that will eventually be a .45 single stack with a standard 5" and a second barrel an recoil system with a two chamber comp. And a .38 Super Open. Both Caspian frames and slides. MUCH assembly required. But, yeah... I know that feeling.
  17. Last night Checked my e-mail and found a notification from my debit card company stating that my card had been used at BOOST mobile. A total of $130 and change spent. I don't have boost mobile and I was certainly not at any of their stores at 10:41AM. So I called my bank went through the red tape of cancelling my cards and ordering new ones. 7-10 days before I can get a replacement. Meanwhile I have $120 to last me the next week and a half. Cops have been called and on their way. Going down to the local boost mobile to find out who used it and get the security cam footage. Thief better hope the cops get to him before I do.
  18. My trigger finger is uncomplicated by Glocks. I have shot a few as well as the M&P. I'll stick with my 1911s.
  19. I suspect this is a barrel fitment issue. Field strip the gun but leave the barrel in the slide. Move the barrel in and out of battery. Do the locking lugs engage smoothly? Does it take some effort to push the locking lugs int the slide? If so, your barrel hood may be a thousandth or two long. You can use a dry erase marker to coat the slide and barrel locking lugs and then run that test again to see where the lugs are making hard contact. If everything is smooth and effortless there, mount the barrel in the frame without the slide. Now move the barrel back and forth. Does the barrel lug ride over the slide stop pin easily? Or does it take some effort? If so your lug may be a little oversized.
  20. That's interesting considering I have never seen him do it.
  21. Now I know what I been doing wrong. I breathe while I shoot. Though I admit I do it in a controlled fashion so that my sight picture is halfway through my exhale and that is when I squeeze the trigger. I also don't hold the gun with a gorilla/death grip. Just enough to keep the gun in control. And I shoot with both eyes wide open. It's a wonder I can hit anything.
  22. I'll take your word for it. I've never had a gun chambered for 38S to try it in but I would have thought the staight wall chamber would be too tight for the tapered 9. Good to know, though. If I get desperate for ammo I can always shoot 9s.
  23. You're shooting 9mm in a 38S barrel without any issues? That I'd like to see. I would think the tapered 9mm wouldn't even chamber properly.
  24. Well, it should be fairly modern as I haven't ordered it yet. I wanted to make sure of the compatibility before I ordered it. And actually I did a little research on the rim specs and it seems there is only a few thousandths difference in diameter, which was my biggest concern. And if a matt is using it reliably and not having case head failures, I'm pretty sure I can make it work.
