  1. I just started shooting 3 gun last year and for my shotgun adding a tube was all I did. You will get to matches and see other setups that will give you a much better idea of what you want. Buying a tube like a Nordic you can use that on your next gun if you get a +5 thru +8 with only the purchase of new nut from Nordic. Save the money for a barrel for your next shotgun unless your 870 has a 28" with a fixed full choke. Your going to want to buy a bunch of stuff to start but resist the urge until you've shot a few matches.
  2. Having extended barrel life would be melonite treated versus a standard untreated stainless barrel correct?
  3. That's correct. Finding some way to keep it steady while knocking the pin out is the hardest part.
  4. I'd also be a customer wanting to get a little different reticle. Thats the main thing that has been holding me back from getting one of these.
  5. I emailed Midwest with my concerns about the hand guard ID and I received a email back with a diagram indicating that it's 1.7 from the bottom of the handguard to the top of the rail. The 1.3 which is stated on their site is a left to right measurement. Not a lot of room to spare, and with the Carbon Arms gas block side to side you need a bit more. Its a great rail and can be had for much less than some others.
  6. I've got the MI SS Gen 2 on one upper, its light and small diameter feels good in the hand. Downside is the small diameter makes it impossible to get certain gas blocks underneath. Another upper I have a Rainier Arms Force on. Its still very light and most any low pro gas block will fit. They now have a mod 2 that is even lighter. I had a Samson on an upper that I sold. Felt in the hand like the Rainier just a few ounces heavier. I wanted to shave off as much hand guard weight as I could to help balance the rifle better.
  7. I haven't bought a low mass bcg yet but I'm looking at getting the voodoo when I do. I did replace 4 steel weights from my rifle buffer and drop the weight to 2.9 oz with some delrin rod. Cost about $2. It did let me use less gas. Recently switched it for the Taccom ULW buffer. Don't have many rounds through it yet but so far I like the results. For the price it is worth a look.
  8. I'd say about 2/3 of what Pat did and about 1/2 as much as you can safely remove. The factory is only gonna go so far. They have to make sure there is a certain safety factor built in so they know its not gonna break no matter how many 1800 fps turkey loads someone shoots through it. Remember they gotta warranty their product. The amount the factiry removed is as much or more then I've seen on any other 3-gun shotgun. It's plenty for the first time shooter to be able to drop dueces successfully. If you want to load at world class speeds you're gonna have to do more on any factiry gun. That answers my question, thanks for the info. Sounds like a good gun for a guy like me. Street price will decide I guess if getting one of these or buying a modified gun from MOA will be the better option.
  9. I'm interested to know how close the loading ports on these guns are to the port work Patrick Kelley did for his original article. I'm also one of the shorter people who is interested in the compact stock as a stand alone part to replace the standard stock.
  10. I was looking at trying some of the matches because I've only shot longer outlaw style matches so far. The combination of super short drag stages, the factory rule changes from what I normally shoot, and long travel to the nearest kinda kills my interest.
  11. I've got the Timney and the SD 3G. I prefer the SD 3G over the Timney, it's not a two stage but is closer to that then a single stage. You apply pressure to the trigger face and it will move a little bit, very repeatable. Then a small amount of more movement without an increase in pressure the gun goes off. Reset is extremely short. Shooting limited it's been good out to 400 yrds in matches. You can still prep the trigger before breaking the shot. I still want to try the CMC from all the good things I've heard, I just don't have access to one to try like I did the other 2 before I bought them.
  12. This in my opinion is the real reason to have a trust. The leo/fingerprint/picture as an individual is important some places where local politics make it almost impossible to get a sign off. The ability to have multiple people able to use the item makes it a simple decision.
  13. Are you wanting a quick detach or thread on can? If you want qd I'm a big fan of my Silencerco Specwar 7.62. Price is good and rated for way more gun than anything in my safe. Heavy and long are the downside. Just got a new email today that Silencerco has a new model, the Omega, that looks like it may be my second can. I have yet to see a can from any company I didn't like, just need to be sure before what you want out of it.
  14. I could run that rule, I love my upper but its replaceable. I agree that between a fairly basic $600 AR and say a $1300 AR built for competition there is a difference that even a newbie shooter like me can realize in performance. Having one of each its going to be interesting when I upgrade the el cheapos trigger. I'd think the average 3 gunner would be hard pressed to see a significant performance difference between my $978 upper(sights included) and a much more expensive upper. At the same time I think the better than average guy could run it and be happy with the results.
  15. As I don't shoot in 3GN Popular, or 3GN Mostly Unlimited, I will only speak to my thoughts on 3GN Limited-er. I like the proposed changes with the exception of the 15 round pistol rule, and I would not consider the 15 round rule a deal breaker, just that it is a needless and arbitrary limit. The rifle limit makes sense, 30 rounds is the standard size. 8 +1 is the start amount for the shotgun, so why not cap capacity at that to make it easy for compliance. The 15 rounds in the pistol is the arbitrary one, 140 is the accepted magazine length, why not use the same measure everyone else does and not have a bunch of drama? The reason that this thread exists is to get some feedback on the rules prior to them being set in stone, let's spend our time debating the rules and possible improvements. This is exactly what I am thinking on the pistol mags.Rifle mags in the same division have a set length but unlimited capacity.7.3.3.3 All Rifle magazines must be in a thirty (30) round factory configuration max length ONLY and fit in the magazine gauge. There is no maximum capacity, as long as the magazine is of legal length or less. Use of lower capacity magazines is allowed So if you can cram 32 rounds into a standard 30 round length rifle mag you are good to go, why not the same for 140 mm pistol mags? And I do have one rifle mag that fits 32 and is standard length.
  16. +1 the trick is to capture the spirit of run what you brung. From what I read on the original document 3GN tried but missed the mark a bit. IMHO I see where they are going with all this, but reading it makes my head hurt. Hopefully they sort it out before the SW regional in February because what I read was pretty confusing. I was the new shooter who wanted to shoot 3 gun not long ago. I ran and still run what I had. Its been a blast, I run limited because I enjoy it. First match I showed up with 40 round rifle mags, a 9+1 shotgun, and bone stock pistol. It was a blast and I got my butt kicked by experience. Now I have upgraded a little but long term I think creating a division for "new" shooters doesn't work, it will be gamed. Create divisions for of the way people like to shoot, don't create a division for every single piece of gear to have a place. Some guns may never be optimal or competitive.
  17. So they did update the rules for Factory. 7.3.1.4 Magazines shall not be loaded with more than fifteen (15) rounds after the start signal. However a (15+1) magazine is legal to charge the chamber at the make ready command. 7.3.1.5 Magazines used shall not exceed 171.25 mm OAL (overall length) for single stacks and shall not exceed 141.25 mm OAL for staggered magazines. Downloading magazines to fifteen (15) rounds is allowed. The divisions are meant to group like kinds of equipment, downloading magazines to force ammo capacity equality between platforms misses the mark for me. Every gun had pros and cons, competitors should make the choice and live with it.
  18. I used a 1/2" diameter, it was the closest I could find that dropped right in. I think to get the 2.9 oz I have 1 steel weight, the hollow spacer, and replaced 4 weights with the delrin rod. The insides still shake around and haven't seen a problem in the last 2 years of running it.
  19. I would be shooting Factory division. Not much factory about it. I would need to plug one shell in my 9 round tube, only run 30s on my rifle. I thought just run factory 19 round magazines and then I watched the video and reread the rules and got confused. I'm still seeing 140s are forbidden in the ruleset for Factory. 7.3.1.4 Magazines used must be of factory configuration and length. Use of after market base pads or extensions is strictly forbidden. I'm ok with that, much rather run factory mags and load them up rather than download any to 15. 30 instead of 40 isn't a huge deal I just like the 40s and don't think $18 vs $13 round mags is a barrier to entry. Factory looks more like a name that kind of like Unlimited doesn't make sense to me.
  20. Your H buffer is a carbine length, you will need a rifle length buffer. Bummer. I knew you couldn't use a rifle buffer in a carbine tube as it was too long, but thought the opposite was ok. Evidently not, so it's off to order the JP Low Mass Rifle buffer..... Before you order the JP, you can buy a regular rifle buffer and remove the steel weights and replace them with something like a a length of delrin rod. Mine came out to 2.9 oz and much easier on the wallet.
  21. The Dynamic Resistance brake is short and light. Might be a bigger outside diameter then your barrel but its and excellent option for a decent price.
  22. Went ahead and chopped the stock off last week. Turned out well, got a very straight cut with the chop saw and only needed some light sanding to clean it up. Grinding the new pad ended up being the most difficult part but turned out pretty good for free handing it. Much nicer to shoulder and shoot at a few clays so far. When the weather warms up I will shoot some slugs to see what if any change to POI. Always needed to aim about 6 inches high at 50 yards so I am hoping maybe will be a little closer to POA/POI with the change altering the drop/comb height a little bit.
  23. I bought 500 rounds of steel match .223 about 2 years ago, all grey colored cases. 0 failure to fires. About 6 months ago I bought 300 rounds more. 2 Different lots, 150 rds of the grey cases and 150 ended up being greenish lacquered cases. 0 failures out of the grey case lots and 2 failures with the lacquer. 1 was a solid primer strike, the second was an obvious light hit. Far from extensive sample but the only 2 failure to fires out of that rifle in about 1500 rds.
  24. Thanks for the advice on the sanding. I'll start with the block and sandpaper. Then if that doesn't seem to be going fast enough break out the belt sander.
  25. I have googled it, lots of videos for the Supernova, haven't really found any for the Nova. From my research the 20 gauage has another lip inside the stock that makes for easy shortening but my 12 gauge has no provision. I've got the process thought through I think except for finding a way to secure the stock/receiver assembly to ensure a nice clean straight cut. I'm not going for perfection, but I want to have a professional looking job once I'm done.
