  1. There are many good mags, and many bad manufacturers. But if you want the best, by a margin x3 you need to contact Virgil Tripp (the "T" in STI) and have him fabricate and send his Cobra-Mag. Nothing comes close. He has .45acp, 40sw, and is going to reintroduce, 38 super and 9mm shortly. NO CONTEST for S/S. And one of the best gunsmiths in the country, with a turnaround time of 4-6 weeks not 4-6 months !!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. Just one quick story: Although I shoot CZ's in Production, I keep my 1911's (wide and narrow) all ready to rock. Cliff note version: I bought a Single Stack Custom .40 Caspian about three years ago that was the Haunted gun, first match - 2nd shot, both ambi safeties fall out, same guy holds Honor and builds a new gun for me but it turns out that the smith in his shops that gets assigned my build has a drinking problem (I respect the disease and go easy on them) but cuts the frame openings incorrectly (now its an STI) so a year later at the next match, the safeties fall out again, then I pay a local gunsmith $1000 dollars to make this gun right, done with the first guys - the new smith almost gets there but the safeties (the pinned type) drop 1/16" whenever I rested my thumb on them, so annoying that I shelved the gun for 6 mos - on a whim I say to myself, let me run some of Virgil's Cobra Mags out of the gun when Single Stack gets approved as a provisional class in USPSA, but still that Safety issue getting in my head - spoke first with Sherri (a class act), then Virgil, who talks me into sending him the gun while he builds me 5 .40 cal 8 round mags - $150 dollars for the gunsmithing, the mags are unequalled and I finally, finally get this gun back and its perfect, runs any ammo, safeties are as smooth and solid as any 1911 I've ever owened - for those that pass on Virgil as a gunsmith to just buy his by far "Best in class Mags", you are missing the boat my friends, Virgil is still one of the countries top 5 gunsmith's - oh and the gun was back in 4weeks. TY Jkushner1
  3. Just to clarify, the gun in question is NOT a CZ. The ruling is clear that the legal and approved 85 Combat's trigger can be legally installed in the approved SP-01. This is different, the manufacturer that makes this trigger offers it for sale OEM, the only gun you can install it on already listed as approved (because all their double action guns are already on the approved list. No big sweat here, because I can always back the overtravel screw out and take it out. I may be in Geroge's court here. No sweat.
  4. A certain gun manufacturer that produces a Pd legal gun, offers in its OEM parts line the same trigger that all of its approved double action Pd guns have but with the addition of an overtravel screw. Everyone of this manufacturer's DA guns are approved for USPSA Pd division. And they dont make any race or limited gun that could utilize this trigger (what sane competitor would shoot a double action gun in Limited or Open anyway). So this part can only be installed in guns that are already on the approved USPSA PD gun list. I believe this trigger is legal for PD. I have read the Vanek thread and 85 Combat/Sp-01 thread, and still stand by my position but welcome comments. Thanks, Jon
  5. Reloading Gurus: Please take a guess at what Power Factor the following load comes in at: 3.3 gr VV 320 OAL 1.090" 147gr Remington Match FMJ RN Federal Small Pistol Primers: Its between 120PF and 140PF Thanks for you input: jkushner1
  6. Guys I am primarily a CZ guy. But have three Tanfo's - since I shoot production mainly I bought the eaa Tanfoglio Stock Elite. A gorgious gun. I dont think it will ever replace the SP-01/85 Combat love affair I have but I will mention a few things: 1. These guns are as good as any S_I out there, period. 2. Eric Grauffel is a great guy and ships parts to me all the time from France (to PA). He has a grease and oil called ARM II that has become my absolute favorite - so anything you see on the Tanfo Italy website can be sent to you by Eric. 3. There are not many master level Tanfoglio gunsmiths in the country (USA) I know of one - D.R. Middlebrooks - he has my Elite Stock right now and I hope to have it back soon with trigger/sear and overall action at as good as anyone in the states can obtain (D.R is the owner of Tactical Shooting Academy - google it). TY Jon
  7. I bought an older Tanfoglio Longslide Sport .40 (4.5" bbl - hate to see there shorty ) from a gunsmith friend that used to compete with it the early 90's - he dialed the trigger in w/SA 2.8# and DA 5.5#, the gun still shoots great - I bought some Corbon Performance Match Minor .40 which makes about 132pf using 165gr MontGold TC - I did knock down steel better, the gun ran like a charm, I may shoot it at a couple steel matches, mainly because I am already dealing with a major equipment change, I pretty much exclusively shoot CZ's in Pd, and went from an 85 Combat finally after a year of owning the SP-01 to the SP-01 permanently (after a certain CZ Shooting Team member tweaked that trigger like I have never seen a CZ trigger tweaked - its gorgious, and he shortened SA reset to almost as short as the 85 Combat). I have Kinda found that my 147 gr 9mm 900 fps load - Hornady RN feels alot like that Corbon Ammo in .40 cal. As C hoping to become a B, I just may not be good enough to differentiate.
  8. STI Edge, Trojan, Custom .40 (non PD), S&W 5906, G-35, HK Expert, Para LDA 9mm x2, Para P-16 40, New worked Tanfo Stock Elite, Tanfo Long Slide .40, so on, so forth - everday I pick all these up polish em up with a rag and put them back, for three years I went right to my tuned 85 Combats, Now it my SP-01, Tuned and tweaked (second being built right now). I watched three Glocks break over the last three club matches, when reliable there too light, hate it. One had the Mag release shatter midway thru El Pres. I can shoot what I want, I been there - its CZ without nothing coming close. Our Ergos are better than any, our accuracy cant be matched, our reliability is unquestionable, yeah a little heavy for carry, but my Kahr does me just fine there. In 2-3 more years also take look at Ltd, the Tac Sport is catching on - I have twins that will run with any STI Custom shop product. CZ Period. I may buy a Korth SA/DA so I can say I paid alot, but not on a CZ, I'd pay three times what I paid, to have the priviledge to shoot the best DA action gun ever. Hey Jeff Cooper doesnt lie - he said that the best DA pistol in the world is the CZ 75 - period. Weight wise, the Stainless, non tac-rail Sig 226 is the only one that come close if you can learn that trigger.
  9. Whoa ! My load CZ 85 - chrono'd at last major tourney at 135pf Hornady 147 gr RN OAL 1.150 TG 3.2 gr !!!!!!! Fed small pistol Do you that new ported chamber ?? If not, you may shortly
  10. Whoever stated that the TS rear sight is junk just got added to my IPSC Fraud list or is an employee of a competing Ltd gun company - this stock fixed rear may be the best fixed sight ever put out as ofm.
  11. I shoot Hornady'a 147 Grain RN TC over 3.1-3.3 gr TG, OAL 1.150, Last chrono at Major MAtch was 135 PSF. Gun CZ 85 (BBl 4.7") The Hornandy Non Taps are better than 90% of all else out there, the only other bullets as good are certain montana golds and believe it or not remington. Midway usually has great prices on the Hornady 147 RN's TC Thanks, Jon
  12. Owner of PSI is the former President of MecGar USA and Petersen Publishing (Guns and Ammo), Nighthawk, SIG GSR and other are using his single stack mags OFM. I can guaranty you the quality here is only equaled by the Likes of Virgil Trip - Cobra Mag, Wilsons Aristo and other top, top shelf Mags. Jay knows the business, and has the contacts in Italy to create as good a product as possible. LPA sights are no slouch product either, their the Bomar of europe. He is very close friends with my Best Man.
  13. Not only have I gone through the evolution of replacing the ofm Fixed sights that came with alot of the guns I bought and tried and then realized that fixed sights are the best option for me, I now have also retired from the use of fiber optics and gone back to good ol' black steel front blades - no breakage with the front f/o's, just found I was cheating shots that lead to less quality. My Pd and Ltd gun are now all fixed front and rear with no more f/o either. Travis Thomasie noticed it when I took the Double Impact weekend course with he and Max (it was awesome), and recommended departing from fiber optic fronts. Here are my CZ Limited Guns, the best fixed rears I've used.
  14. Canada, New Jersey, New York, add Australia and England - their collective idea of civil rights is "Let us, Let you, help yourself". Scary ! Mags - MecGar is the OFM mag manufacturer for more than 60 factories. You dont gain this status by building shitty mags. It always comes down to a balance of the mag spring strength and freshness versus the same for the recoil spring. Try to see if you can stay in your car by showing a NJ State Trooper a pinned mag, not likely, you'll be taking a small trip quite likely.
  15. Assuming your dealing with NJ law, just search for the 15 round Megars and buy the rubber base pads directly from CZ USA - these are as good as ofm and are legal in NJ - of course still have you buying a 2nd set, The ofm 10 rd mags are not as reliable as the Mecgars, do not but ProMag, although they tend to work in CZ, case of superior gun engineering overriding inferior mag engineering. Thanks, Jon
  16. To be real, its has to be STEEL (with Fancy walnut grips) CZ 85 Combat - have an SP-01, but just can't leave my 85's alone. * I'm stacking sandbags for Glock/XD response to my wisecrack ! oh, and if its Limited, I'll pass on the 1911, I do it about twice a week, my hand passes an STI Edge .40, a G35 w/Bomars, an HK Expert with speedchute in my safe and just seems to always land on those twin 85 Combats that Angus built. For Limited see attchmt. J
  17. Cool Photos - My Bigger Twins (CZ 75 IPSC ST & Tactical Sport) My smaller twins are two 85 Combats built by Angus with Omega Fancy Walnut stipled grips. Here: Belt: CR-Speed Holster: Ghost Mags: TS 17 rds w/Taylor Freelance +2's = 19 rds Load: Alternate between 200 gr Zero TC / 4.5 WSF (not wst) / Win Small Pist Primer / oal 1.180" OR 180 gr Zero HP / 4.6 gr TG / Fed Small Pist Primer / oal 1.180" Gun in Holster: .40 CZ 75 Tactical Sport courtesy of Angus; Competition Hammer; Competition Steel Trigger; Steel Front Sight; Fixed OFM Rear Sight (the best), Matfakta Grips; Sprinco Recoil Reducer with Wolff 12 lb Std CZ 75 Spring (no coils clipped); Non-OFM buffer - BufferTech (Until gun breaks in them black OFM. Gun on Mat: .40 CZ 75 IPSC ST enhanced by Angus (ser #2000); OFM Hammer, Comp Steel Trigger; Fixed Tac Sport Rear Sight (the best); Steel Front; Matfakta grips; Sprinco Recoil Reducer (This gun used by Alan Dugger to design the Sprinco Rod for this model series) with Wolff 12 lb Std CZ 75 Spring (no clipped); OFM Black Buffer *Recently removed all IPSC front fiber optic sights, was cheating the sights too much I mostly shoot Production but these guns will shoot with any Edge or P-16 or otherwise for that matter.
  18. I just got my gun and Mags Cobra) back from Virgil for SS. A custom STI Single Stack .40 that loads 8 flush fit. I would love to use 9mm STI Trojan in SS, but I just cant calculate a benefit, so I am going to load major. Virgil also cleaned up the gun, its the tightest its ever been, modified the feed ramp on the ultimatch bbl, and this gun will be a SS dominator. With a an S&A magwell/mainspring housing, Virgils BP9 .40sw 8 rounders fit flush and he tuned the gun around the mags. An aside, I had him pull the front fiber optic as I a making a massive switch back basic black steel front sights on my main Pd and Ltd gun (Angus built CZ only) and the two STI 1911's I have retained for SS. I have to Colt 38 supers with Cobra's. But I am going major or 9mm, love 38 Super but just too expensive. Virgil is still one of three best gun guys in the world, and he and Sherry are honest and good people. TY Jon
  19. For a hypothetical shooter (not me, we'll maybe) who shoots as a C in Production with a current USPSA classification of 56.99% C (I believe B is 60%-75%) would the following clasifier scores be more in the B range or C range: El Pres 9.69 sec; 50 pts; HF 5.16; no pen Close Quarter Stds 20.28 secs: 102 pts; HF 5.0296; no pen Bookout's Boogie 15.29 secs; 54 pts, HF 3.531; no pen TY Jon
  20. Agreed - no need for email to Mr A. I read throughout this site (Vanek, Beretta Speed Bump, etc) and the USPSA site, Both guns are approved are th part is an unaltered state from the factory. I wont bother John on this one as it quite obvious to me. TY Jkushner11
  21. CZ - an 85 Combat Trigger in an SP-01 I will email this same question to John A. Both the SP-01 and 85 Combat are on the approved list of Production Guns. So my question is would it be legal to install an 85 Combat Trigger into an SP-01 (similar to the new CZ Shadow that has not been approved yet). I am looking for opinions not rulings, obviously. Thanks, Jon
  22. I have not been able yet to transition from my 85 Combats to the SP_01 that Angus built for me, at first it I thought it was a longer trigger reset but I think it is the redesigned grip/frame that is slightly narrower at the neck than my 85 grips diameters. In addition, the different trigger geometries added to the difference - I did notice that Angus is installing 85 style tiggers on the Shadow. But in the one practice session I had like three reset misses and pulled the trigger with no boom. Its beautiful, but I am still using the 85's. Does the SP-01 have a trigger travel stop screw, I didnt see one. TY Jkushner11
  23. EERW:Ooh ! They are purdy !! I have four sets 100% checkered on the way from Angus. Two for my 85's to compare to my stipled Omega's and my expensive but super well made Nill Griffe CZ 75/85 "Combat" version grips. Once I make my pick, the other two sets go on my twin Tac Sport/IPSC ST's - sayeth, Mike Eagleshield, "just shave 1/8" from the bottom to clear the magwell - other wise the exact same grip, Btw, my magwell's Leif Nilsson's Matfakta alum wells. Thanks, JON
  24. Vlad: I am on a move back to basics since taking the class with Max and Travis at Factoryville (both of them truly, down to earth, great guys) so on both my twin Angus built/tweaked 85 combats, I have removed the front CZ/Angus fiber Optic front sights for his std steel front comp and comp rear sights. Additionally I am moving back to wood grips. Here are my oberservations, I use Wolff 10/11/12 lb springs right out of the package (14 lbs ofm for 9mm). I use them on Sprinco Light Load recoil guide rods - Alan dugger dials them in for me - the wind of the inner spring should oppose the wind direction of the Wolff. I very rarely have any binding and when I do (1 of 750 shots) it comes in the form of slight delay at slide back when cycling shots. Jack ash GR's are also less likely to produce any binding, I haven't done anything but a range cleaning (5-10 min) in 2000 rds. This same spring (listed on wolff under EAA (CZ only) in 12 lb is what I use in my major CZ 75 tac sport also over Sprinco guide rod. The lighter spring, the less likely that binding occurs in all my CZ's. As to getting back to battery, add a buffer tech recoil buffer - they help the gun with that last 1/8 " of return. I clean my mags also after every stage, I am fanatical about the mag being clean, not the gun. A couple other notes, CZ's ofm rubber grips regardless of how much material you remove from the inside, always find a way to grab the mag body a little, especially when dirty. Regarding the mag brake, the 85 already is modified out of the factory, so my mags (currently using Mecgar 15 rounders due the laws of your state) drop very cleanly. Sam Barbakov of Omega, Nill Griffe and Angus' new gorgious coco grips all make for a better mag drop and regrip, especially if you have smaller hand and do a flip on mag changes. Lastly, if the fp safety is still in your gun, a gritty one loves to hang up the slide on the last movement into battery (again, owning an 85 I don't deal with that). Lastly, you should grind down the internal lobe of the slide stop, especially if using 124 gr bullets or heavier, if not the stock lobe will skin copper jacket material from the bullet which builds up and causes all kinds of things get sticky. Thanks, Jon
  25. I have 7 seven CZ's and 3 Tanfglios - All my CZ's have either been built, bought or tweakd by Angus Hobdell. I shoot an 85 Combat in Pd mainly which I bought thru Angus (2 - twins), I also have an SP01 but cannot leave my 85 Combats, I love them. I have a CZ Tac Sport and Twin CZ IPSC ST again either bought, built or tweaked by Angus. I have the new CZ 75 .40 Compact, that I am dailing in for home defense only purposes. I just finished a project with an EAA/(all EAA's are Italian Tanfoglio's) Stock Elite with parts coming from Eric Grauffel although EAA is getting better in the "what is an action pistol shooter cetegory", but they cannot hold a candle to the support, commitment and innovation of CZ USA and CZ BRNO. It more difficult to get a really good DA tigger out of a Tanfoglio than a CZ, easy with a CZ, I have Matfakta's metal magwell for my twin big CZ's TS/ST's - I think you will be much happier wth CZ, The EAA Stock is beautiful, has a bull barell and Eric got me the euro fixed rear sight, havent competed with it yet, but it is deadly accurate at the range. (I also have an older EAA Witness Long Slide 4.75" bbl built by a gunsmith for himself, that DA trigger is gorgious, In addition I have a small frame .40 Limitd EAA Witness that has all the euro upgrades from Eric) I still would stick with CZ. Here are some notes of worth: - Metal Magwell for Tac Sport - Leif Nilsson - Mafakta Sweden, great guy, good stuff, and aways innovating CZ's. - For an EAA project, Savvy Survivor (google him), also get alot of parts from Eric Grauffel - a great guy and the uncontested best IPSC shooter in the world, that is until Angus starts shoting Open !! - Anthing CZ: Angus at Ghostholster/CZ USA or Matt Mink CZ USA can do any work (as can Miossi or EGW) or get any available part to you like lighning, also Mike Eaglshield head gunsmith at CZ USA in KS, KS is an excellent resource. - For the Big Limited CZ TAC Sport or IPSC ST - same Gun) Robin "Glock" Taylor, is making great mag base pad extensions to get you to 19 rounds .40 - google: Taylor Freelance - Omega Grips are the best custom wood gips for CZ's, The Nill Griffe wood is quite nice also, but Angus is about to unveil some gorgious wood grips. - I am going back to basics, just pulled most of my fiber optic front sights to go back to conventional steel blades, pulled most of my rubber grips for wood - rubber grabbed and slowed down mag drop and hampered my short hand flip to mag release. ty Jkushner11
