  1. If they would put an actual rear sight on those (that actually aligned with the POI) I would buy one. As it stands I shot a friend's .22 and it's impossible to hit anything at distance, and to be honest I think my trigger control isn't the issue.
  2. Very true, that's why my MKIII has a Miculek comp on it. I have no idea if it helps, but it sure does look cool.
  3. Correct answer is always: mount the rifle, run around a bit to get your mind off of what you're doing, then throw your weak hand to your belt. That's how you want the mag oriented. I run left-hip pouch with bullets to the rear because my wrist orientation doesn't move from grab to insertion.
  4. Harbor Freight has them for $20, usually you have to get an adapter to go from 1/2 to 3/4. Some barrel nuts line up at the low end (which feels like "pretty darned tight, but not crazy") and some line up at the top end (which feels like "holy crap, I hope I don't rip this thing in half!) If you find yourself stuck at 65lbs and not lined up, a tiny, tiny, tiny smear of grease on the barrel shoulder will reduce the force needed by 20lbs or so. by tiny, I mean a dot of grease the size of a poppy seed, then give it a wipe with a paper towel to remove some of it.
  5. I finally broke down and ordered some proper roll pin punches. Regular punches plus lots of protective masking tape work fairly well, but I still usually wind up with one small ding. DPMS makes a dandy plain handguard, you can find it on Brownell's or at Del-Ton, $50 for rifle-length 12".
  6. Do be conscientious as you reload on the move, you're not used to it and the revolver reload can swing the gun around a bit more than you might expect.
  7. I went with my gut and built around that upper, it feels good to have a pro confirm my choice. I absolutely love it, the extra thickness makes it feel very solid and I've never had a problem with extraction/ejection/ I will point out that it's not cut for ramps, something I didn't realize when I put a MK12 on it. I've had a couple of occasions where if I drop the bolt from less-than-full retraction it won't strip a shell completely, still working that out. The bullet makes it into the barrel extension so I don't think it's a ramp problem, maybe just a new gun problem that will break in. The setup runs MOA to 200 so far with bulk Federal 5.56, I spent money on a Giselle trigger and not much else. Stag lower, plain FF tube guard, rifle gas, JP adjustable block, generic 6-pos stock, boron BCG. I think it was $800 when everything was said and done.
  8. I can't figure out why the ejector rod would be tight, unless you've seriously bent it. Otherwise it's a classic case of endshake, you're right at the final edge of clearance. Dryfire works fine because the gun isn't heating up, but live fire heats it up just enough to expand and drag on the forcing cone. Get some sparkplug gauges and check the gap with the guns at full cock. You want at least .002, no more than .008 or so. Be sure to check all six sides.
  9. No, on the cant adjustment and the holster/rod interface. It just liked to shift.
  10. It's a point I've made to myself, but I keep coming back. I think we're just unique in that the entirety of our "action" is on the clock, and it's a very short clock. If you put a timer on a golfer from the initiation of the swing to ball contact it's about 3 seconds, times 80 for a decent golfer, for 3 1/2 minutes of action. Same principle but nobody ever breaks it down that way, because the game is so much more. That said, I would like to try a format some time with a big purse, all the shooters are expected to show up on Thursday and dope out the stages to their satisfaction. Friday everyone shoots every stage in golf format with no walkthrough, have a cut, then shoot the whole thing again Saturday and Sunday to get the champion. Top stage HF is reset every day, match points accumulate. I haven't done the math but I think it would work, if the purse was big enough to attract the talent. 15 minutes per stage for a foursome means you get through in 3 hours for a 12-stage match. Hire pasters with the entry fee (which would be fairly steep) so that the shooters are responsible only for mental prep, shooting, then mag loading and recovery while the other three shoot. You could run 150 or so shooters on Thursday and then make the cut down to 70 or so, have the best dozen in each division go at it. Matt
  11. Not bad. Even though it's a snubnose it still weights a lot. I did cut my thumb and trigger finger though. Cylinder release caught my thumb and I got my finger pinched between the trigger and frame. Nice! First thing to modify on a SW revolver is dehorning the trigger, it will chew you up even with .38 loads if you have a properly high grip.
  12. I will say that the Speed Beez magloader for Rugers and similar is a miracle. You have to pay a few dollars extra per 500 for plated instead of waxed lead, but the thumb leather you save offsets it by a mile.
  13. Remember, you're only one eye away from being only one eye away from being blind. Imagine how much more careful you would be with only one eye, and then be that careful with the spare as well, since that's no good way to live. I assume everyone wears protection when reloading?
  14. Hardest part for me is finding something to support the gas block. I usually chuck the pin into my drill and spin it against a carbide stone for a few seconds to give it a little taper.
  15. I had a Speed Sec and could never get it tight enough that it wouldn't move around during a match. Any comments on the Cup Challenge for optic and non- guns? We got a sweet 50% card from Safariland at Nationals.
  16. My only complaint is changing primer rams, it's easily the bulk of my time trying to get a wrench in there and turning it 1/4 turn every time, then having to reset. The primer system other than that is fine, you just need to change it a few times to get the hang of it. FWIW, if you watch the gap between the advance arm and the system where you can first see a primer advance from empty, it's 3 more clicks to get it under stage 2. To the OP, I don't see any reason for you to have a missing primer, as someone suggested clean the system and check for burrs on the primer plate and the primer tube.
  17. This, the hand is too long, and is pushing the cylinder locked before the hammer can drop. You'll have a much better time grinding on a hand instead of the star as well. Buy another hand and fit to the star would be my advice; I'd hate to start on this particular project without a spare. I've heard that the proper timing is to put some pressure on the cylinder (let a finger gently drag on it so it doesn't advance from momentum) while taking the hammer to single-action cock. The cylinder stop should engage ever so slightly before the single-action sear clicks, or maybe at the same time. My main gun runs way behind in truth, but since I don't do any slow shooting with it my cylinder always locks from momentum anyway.
  18. Left hand represent! Good shooting with the horrible 1911. ;-)
  19. It was popular before FO sights were available, and Jerry's video is very old. Jerry shoots FO just like the rest of us now.
  20. The energy difference between 1300 fps and 1145 fps given the same payload, is like the difference between 170 PF and 125 PF in pistol. I can measure a difference on the clock between 1145 and 1200. When I go from 1145 to 1300, my splits almost double. Ahh, that much, huh? Guess I better consign the heavy stuff to trap and buy some Lites. Thanks Mark. Matt
  21. Any experience with the scope? There's a $25 rebate right now, brings it down to $200.
  22. That's all well and good, but I kinda question whether he (you?) could hit separate plates at that rate.
  23. I stuck with my Nordic +18s at the match this weekend, it's nice having that big buffer on ammo. I do need some 20s for low profile shooting, but when it's a close course 48 rounds eases the mind.
  24. Mossberg 930, so a gas gun. It's fun being ignorant again.
  25. Thanks all. Man, some of those videos are shooting FLAT. I'm using regular 1300fps 7 1/2, which probably has something to do with it, plus since I'm new to the game I don't have as much brain power available to set up properly every time. Any shooting teams need a new 3-gun guy with a certain revolver ability? Will represent for ammo and match entries. Matt
