Dillon .223 case gage
dmc_md replied to b2alphaplease's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
I do not think it measures diameter. It measures headspace and overall length. Darren -
I had both. I just sold my Dillon. I looked at it like this. Trimming with the dillon takes zero time because you're doing it while you resize. However, you then have to chamfer and deburr afterwards, so you have to do two more steps. With the giraud, you trim, chamfer, and deburr in one step. So to resize and trim with the dillon is three steps, while to do it with the giraud is only two. This assumes you chamfer and deburr which I do. Some do not. Darren

Most people at the matches I go to, including myself, use a Kowa. I started with a $50 special at Cabelas. A Simmons. It worked ok for up to maybe 100 yards if I was lucky. Then I bought a Konuspot 100 because some other guys had konus scopes. It was fine for 100, but did not work very well for 200 yards. Then I bit the bullet and bought the Kowa. Well worth it. I won't need another scope. Darren

I have the same problem with cheap ammo in my zombie gun. I finally decided it wasnt worth the hassle My reloads have never had a hiccup. Darren

I've heard very good things about Big Dave at Elk Castle. Darren

Put the "bad" bolt carrier into one of the other guns and see how it runs. If it doesn't work in a known good gun then it's a problem with the bolt carrier. If it works just fine, it's a problem with the upper's gas system. Darren

Reloading .223 is easy: Get some brass. Clean the brass. Lube the brass. I use whatever lube I find that's cheap. Size the brass. You do not need carbide dies. They do not offer any advantage. Get regular dies. Check your sizing with a headspace gauge. You can trim the brass now with a dillon rt1200 and then clean the lube off of the brass, or... Clean the lube off the brass first and then trim with your choice of trimmer. Measure the case length with calipers and adjust trimmer if necessary. Chamfer and deburr the brass. Swage if necessary. Prime, charge, seat bullet. Crimp if you want. Shoot. Get two toolheads. One to size (and trim if using the rt1200), and one to load. Darren

I watched a primer put a bullet into the barrel of a 223 AR last week. The shooter recognized it and broke the gun down before he loaded another round. Darren

How much clearance is needed from the Gas block to the handguard?
dmc_md replied to DocMedic's topic in Rifle - Technical
I have very little clearance in mine. I don't think it will effect anything in practice. Darren -
When I crimped, I used a taper crimp. I haven't crimped in a long time. Not necessary for an AR. Darren

The way I understand it, the bullet does not get to the gas port and the action will not cycle. Darren

I think a good trigger is quite important. You can be good or bad, but if you're shooting a crappy trigger, you probably won't do very well. The converse, however, is not true. Just because you have a good trigger doesn't mean you'll do well. Would you rather shoot a 4MOA gun or a 1/2MOA gun? We'd all pick the 1/2MOA gun. You don't want to wonder if it's you or the equipment. Darren

Which .223 primers to avoid when loading on a 650?
dmc_md replied to JC49ae's topic in Rifle/Shotgun
I've loaded thousands of rounds of .223 exclusively with CCI 400 primers and never had a problem. Darren -
223 0n 650 ball powder everywhere
dmc_md replied to Coleman's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
I have also noticed that the indexing can cause powder to spill. Otherwise, ball powder should flow very easily out of the powder die. Darren -
Never heard of a bolt moving too fast issue. I agree with the advice of taking the gun to an AR enthusiast for a once over. Darren

Pretty sweet set up. Darren

RL 550B Reloading primer system
dmc_md replied to rinconjoe's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
This is a pretty common problem. More likely than not, adding a little extra bend to the wire that extends the primer slide will fix the problem. You have to make sure you're getting a full stroke on the slide. I would do this before I would take the whole thing apart and clean and lube it, but that might also be helpful. Darren -
The way I do it is I hold a bunch of cases in my hand, maybe 15-20 or so. Then I spray the lube all over them while I'm holding them. I use a bunch if lube. My hand gets covered in it, which In turn helps the cases get covered. I think standing them all up prior to lubing them is a waste of time. I don't think it matters how exactly you put the lube on. I spray some cases from the bottom ,some from the top, and all in between while I'm holding them. The trick is just to put a bunch of lube on, not how you do it or what lube you use. Darren
-
I used one shot on a few thousand cases. Once I figured out I had to use it pretty liberally I never had a problem. Honestly, now I just use whatever lube I can find that's cheap. I don't think it makes much difference as long as you use enough of it. I've never had a stuck case. Darren

Are you looking for another balance beam or an electronic one? I have a redding balance that's pretty good, and I've got a cheap electronic one as well. I use them for different things and to check each other occasionally. I like having one of each type. As stated above, don't cheap out on your scale. I wish I had a nicer electronic one. Darren

Check out white oak precision's website. John Holliger is a world class shooter and he has his reloading data on his site. IIRC he uses 25 of Reloader 15 with the 69SMK, but don't quote me on that. Darren

I have a Douglas barrel on my CLE upper. You won't go wrong with this or a Krieger barrel. The Wilson barrel from WOA is good too but won't last quite as long. The Wilson from WOA is a good cheaper option. Darren

There's a lot of silhouette shooters shooting CZ's. They're good guns. Sub MOA? Maybe, but doubtful. It's going to depend as much on ammo as on the gun. Plus, the wind is going to blow that .22 bullet around too much to tell anyway. The beauty of silhouette, though, is that it doesn't really need to be sub MOA. You shoot offhand with no coat, no glove, standard stock. You're not going to outshoot the gun. Get the CZ and a powerful scope and have a good time. Darren

Do you guy recheck your loads when using a new bottle
dmc_md replied to ProGunGuy's topic in Miscellaneous BEginners
I do not. Darren -
This is exactly right. A slight variance will not hurt you. Darren
