  1. A dremel, a file, some sand paper and a little refinishing and you could lose yours too.
  2. I think you're on to something there. I have no problem running an STI slide but when building new I'll always take the Caspian option.
  3. Not sure about the rear but you can't use a SVI fiber optic front sight on the Kimber. Kimber has their own dovetail cut for the front sight. Give Dawson Precision a call and tell them what you're trying to do, they'll help you out.
  4. In my old gun I ran a 9 pound variable spring with a Dawson aluminum buffer. The aluminum buffer has all the advantages of using a buffer without most of the disadvantages. Just inspect it when cleaning and if its starting to mushroom out a little give it a few strokes with a hand file, done. I run a recoil master in my new gun but the two guns are very different.
  5. Ok, so I have a new STI Tactical on the way with fixed Heinie Slant 8 night sights. Going with a Dawson .180x.110 front and a Warren Tactical rear. Question, can I just buy the Warren rear for a 1911 with a Novak cut? Where I'm getting caught up is I read two different things, Novak cut or Novak style cut and Novak Lo mount or lo profile cut. Are they the same thing? Is a Novak cut a Novak cut period? I understand there are variations from each manufacturer and sight company but I should be able to give it a little patience file work and make it work right? What am I missing?
  6. I shot both of these rifles. I was shocked at the difference between to two. Both are very good setups but the clock doesn't lie, JP low mas for me, I just get faster shots. Talk about soft recoil, after the first two rounds I kept thinking the rifle was going to malf but never did. Its my first choice for competition but I wouldn't stake my life on it but that's what its for and I'm ok with that. The upper I'm building for this season has a JP low mass carrier.
  7. Eric, what kind of accuracy are you getting. I assume you have a BAR.
  8. Heat is by far far the closest thing I've ever seen to the real thing. The Town wasn't bad either but Heat will always be my top choice.
  9. Really looking into the Browning BAR right now with the right bullet and comp. Semi-auto seems like a good fit here.
  10. The two guns that I've had have both been 5x40. It seems to be the standard. The only downside is they are a little hard to find in a regular hardware store. Shootersconnection, Brazos, etc. sells them in three different lengths. I just go longer than normal and file to fit.
  11. Thanks for all of the suggestions, keep em coming.
  12. Militec-1, doesn't matter the temperature. I used it extensively on my work carbine. Seems to have far less carbon build up. Has held up great on my Open gun as well.
  13. I have a good friend who recently had his shoulder rebuilt and was told by his doc that he can no longer use his heavy recoiling rifles. He is a very active hunter and still wants to be able to take Moose and Elk size animals. I think he can do this by threading his barrel and adding a good comp like a JP tank brake. I cannot think of one that is more effective off the top of my head right now. Other than that what are everyones suggestions and ideas?
  14. I don't know about legal but they make quality products and are great supporters of the sport. That being said, their sights are great at defensive distances, say contact distance to 10 yards or so. If you are going to shoot USPSA I would strongly consider a different style of sight, Dawson, Warren, etc. Great sights for a carry gun though IF they are your thing.
  15. All of this is great advice but you MUST chrono before you do anything or all of this is still just best guess. Find the load you're going to use and get some data then use all of the above mentioned and you'll be good to go. Ammo is expensive, don't guess, know.
  16. I have never seen or felt a difference with powders and a rifle comp probably because there is just so much gas there anyway with the amount of powder your using compared to a pistol. Be careful of using Varget in a barrel less than 18". You may get a little unburned powder and it can eat your comp prematurely. It will shoot fine but wear faster.
  17. Barrel harmonics may not be as good on a LW barrel. Can you see a difference in accuracy, yes, but not in practical accuracy. I've hit everything I've ever needed to hit in multigun with a 16" chrome lined, CHF barrel because that's what I had at the time. When I told Kreiger that I was turning down one of their blanks they were less than excited to hear that and they know a thing or two about accuracy. I think after this 18"stainless I might try a 16" as well. I like how well they handle and the accuracy can be just as good with the right barrel. I say shoot what you have as long as you can still make your hits and spend the rest on ammo and match fees.
  18. Wooden dowel rods painted orange.
  19. I buy foods closest to their natural form so like more fruits and vegetables instead of easy to make processed foods. I started doing this to eat healthier but found I was getting alot more food in my cart for the same amount of money. When I move out of the far north I'll be putting in a garden of all of the vegetables that we usually buy in the store. Lower monthly bills equals higher round count!
  20. A loose upper to lower fit has no impact on reliability or accuracy. It does, however, effect consistency which in turn effects accuracy. Most will never notice. If you're hunting varmints or shooting from a bench you might. I make sure all of my rifles are tight.
  21. I have to hand it to the writers. I was just telling my wife how it was getting a little boring with Rick being on the crazy train and the con telling his life story when he took one to the dome piece. Can't wait for next week.
  22. I've shot a few but I will be surprised if I ever switch from my SJC Titan comp. Its just flat, period. Its is very loud though, maybe not so much for the shooter but I can tell a difference when I RO.
  23. Call Larue Tactical. Tell them what you have and its application. They'll be able to take care of you. I would also look at Warne. They make some rock solid stuff even though its not quick release. With a SPR I can't imagine you would really be taking it off of your rifle that much anyway. And they have been a fantastic supporter of our sport.
