  1. I had a MBF and was seating and crimping in separate dies. While the occasional squib was a pain it was mostly that I had to stop and fiddle with things too frequently. The pace of loading is slightly slower on a 550 but its interrupted less often. If you don't have to worry about crimps I don't think the 1100 is any faster than the 750 for pistol cartridges; maybe it indexes smoother and spills less if you're loading 9 major? I'm just speculating. I mostly shoot 9minor and wanted the seven station for swaging. I'm very happy with a 1050/550 combo and don't miss the 650 at all. Dillon is about to announce their automation package from their acquisition of Ammobot which might sway people towards the 1100 over a 750 too.
  2. When I bought the 650 that I've since sold I think I was only 3-400 difference in price between the fully upgraded five station and the seven station. The 1050 was coming with dies and a casefeeder included at the time, I'm not sure if it still does.
  3. It's really the lack of swaging and cost benefit. The 750 once kitted out with ergonomic upgrades is very close to the 1100 in price that you should really make the full leap for the swage station and eventual automation capability. Also, cheap high volume 223 is rarely worth the price of components to reload; even the precision rounds aren't really a savings opportunity but more an option to tune your load to your gun. This thread is four pages now and my reloading set-up has evolved since I initially commented. I've sold my 650 and now have a 550 for loading rifle (223,308,358win) and some pistol (40sw, 38spl). I have an automated 1050 dedicated to 9mm, and a second automated 1050 dedicated to brass processing that I found cheap. I still think of the 550 as the best value work horse. It's the last press that will be on my bench. I've actually bought it, sold it, and bought it again because I like loading on it more than the 650. With auto indexing I'd produce a squib every 3k rounds or so because I'd be fiddling with something and advance the shell plate without powder and not notice. I don't have that worry on the 550 because everything happens under your control and at your pace. The 550 conversions are also much cheaper so if you pick up a new caliber it's pretty easy to outfit the press for it. The 5 station press only makes sense with a case feeder, which might require new plates, and the conversions are more expensive too. The 5 station press operates in the awkward middle ground without full features but a quite higher price. You can get 90% of the way there with half the cost in a 550. If you find yourself outgrowing the 550, it's the 1100 you'll look to for an upgrade, but the smaller volume calibers will still be well served by the simple 4 station. Finally, on a 550 you only need the powder die to convert between 223/9mm. You can use the same shell plate and buttons and just switch tool heads. Switching between the two calibers on the auto indexer requires a new shell plate, case feed plate, and case feed components.
  4. I think what you've listed is way overkill for a pistol, especially on a manual press. A carbide sizing / decapping combo, Lee is cheap and their undersized sizing die is generally well liked Case mouth expansion, anything works though this is typically part of the powder drop on a progressive machine Seat die, a micrometer isn't really useful unless you change bullet weights/profiles often Taper crimp, and I usually use the Lee Factor Crimp Die here
  5. Not the point of the the tread, but it's a shame this observation got overshadowed. I think it's really interesting and would like to hear more of your thoughts. I would like to see more women at our matches. My wife has expressed an interest but our kid is too young to bring or leave at home right now.
  6. Your comment just made me realize I was responding to a different concept of flat than you, and I'm not sure which the OP meant. I was thinking how high the sights lift in recoil, whereas you're commenting as if the discussion is about bullet drop with distance. I wonder what the original question was about.
  7. Hi Tim. What part of Arizona? If you have a Sportsman's Warehouse nearby you can ask what day they receive reloading materials and stop by that morning. It's a way to not get gouged on primers.
  8. Doesn't almost everyone end up in the Phoenix valley eventually? I'm not sure what the price of horse properties would be - they'd probably be most available in the SW, SE, or NW parts of town. 5 stages on 2nd Saturdays about 2hr NW - https://yavapairecreationleague.net/ 4 stages on 3rd Tuesdays and 5th Saturdays on the Southern edge of the valley - https://phoenixrodandgun.org/practical/practical-schedule 8 stages on 3rd Sundays on north end of town - https://www.cactusmatch.com/matches , or 5-6 stages on 3rd Sundays about 2hr SE of the valley - https://pimapistolclub.com/steel-challenge/ (both are in the morning and conflict) 4 stages on 4th Sundays at the east end of town - https://rsscaz.com/divisions/practical-pistol And then Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday every week there's non-challenge steel somewhere in the valley. Non-challenge steel 1st Sundays 2hr SE of the valley at Pima Pistol Club too.
  9. I agree with this. Outside of an open gun, flat is a fiction of the camera shutter speed, not a feature of a gun or ammo combination.
  10. The local waste water treatment plant has processes in place to extract the lead and remove it from gray water. I think down the drain is better than in the dirt. Let the professionals do their stuff.
  11. I'm glad you asked this question almost a year ago. I think I've finally found some peace from the same guy as the rest of y'all.
  12. I've had a DAA large magnet just hanging around since they were first banned. It recently ended up on my SS belt which has six pouches because it makes the barney juggle easier. On my production belt I have five pouches, plus a simple folded kydex one that holds a mag for make ready at about 5 o'clock. I use it to hang my earpro from the belt when not shooting. The fifth pouch is usually populated and I've never planned to go for the fifth pouch, but I've accidentally fumbled a mag before and needed it. I've heard of some timers being set too sensitive for PCC and accidentally picking up the 'click' of a mostly empty mag on the magnet as another shot during unload and show clear. Never encountered this myself but its spooky enough that I don't go the magnet while unloading. If it was covered I probably would.
  13. Does it have a pinned ejector? For me it's the wrong caliber and wrong barrel, but I think a tri-topped slide and light rail are nice.
  14. That's true. For the five hours it takes to shoot a local the foam plugs work fine, but if I haven't been to the range in a while I notice my ears getting sore at the end of the match. If I've worn them recently they don't become irritating. I've also done some really long distance (intercontinental) motorcycling for which I wore custom molded inserts. Those are comfortable for 12+ hours a day, for multiple days, but its also clear they're not quite as effective as the simple foam plugs. Though they're still better by themselves than most muffs are by themselves.
  15. This is what I do. The foam plugs do the brunt of the work. I wear the foam plugs non-stop and just put on the simple earmuffs when I shoot. It's a cheap easy solution that lets me have a conversation and which I trust to protect my hearing.
  16. I don't see a crack. Where exactly are you looking? There's a small scratch behind the ejection port where the extractor tunnel is. Thanks for taking such a bright well illuminated image though. If there was a flaw that would help us see it.
  17. This is giving me Baz Luhrmann's Romeo+Juliet vibes. I like those large pockets in grips too.
  18. Thanks. I just wanted to confirm we were all on the same topic. I'm glad you hear you had a positive experience with .40 in 47Ds. They're cheap and readily available and it's good for people to know the option.

    DA trigger prep

I'm glad you shared these insights. I don't prep the trigger, but there's more for me to gain elsewhere and I'm going to consider it insignificant at my skill level for a while.

    S2 no decocker

    Have to learn sometime.
  21. .40sw in 47Ds or is your SS a .45? I've had no trouble with 8 rounds of .40 in the the 47FX, but I haven't pursued 10 rounds of 40L like tomjerry1.
  22. That's a dedication to the project I wouldn't have. Wish I had better guidance for you. Is your limited gun also picky? I just ordered a new to me limited gun and my fingers are crossed that it runs with factory length ammo so I don't need to adjust my dies and keep track of reloads.
  23. 40L often runs okay in a 45 mag. Some people are using 47D's for their .40 guns. Have you tried just loading 10 into your 10rd 45 mags? I have Tripp 10R-40SW-RG's but they're for factory length 40. I can take a picture of relative tube lengths between Tripp 45 cobra mags, Tripp 10 round 40 mags, and Wilson 10rd 45 mags, if you wish.
  24. Someone with more experience may come along and explain this to me, but I assumed target focus was the realm of dot guys, and not something that had spilled into iron sights. I only shoot iron sight divisions and my focus changes with target size and distance.
  25. This is what I currently do because an automated press runs much more smoothly with pre processed brass. Being certain that my 9mm is decapped before its swaged is important to me so I currently do the swaging while loading. Lots of automation stems from laziness and I'm no different. I process 40 and 9mm on the same press with the same tool head, shell plate, dies, etc. One of these days I'm going to need to process a lot of 223, and if I can do the processing in a single pass with two decap dies and a swage station I'd be extra happy. The only way I can think to do this without a CP2000 is by reversing the index direction of a 1050/1100.
