Dillion Customer Service

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if there is a post on this or not. I called Dillion on Tuesday because the "sliding thing" that pushes the brass into the shellplate (650) broke. I also had a shellplate that had a station worn out (probably 100k rounds loaded on it). The service was unbelievable! :P On Friday I had a package at my door with the new parts and no charge. I wish other companies would take note of how much loyalty Dillion Precision shows to their customers.

OK, I love them, too.

However, I do need to throw a bit of reality water on this discussion.

I have a 650. I load both handgun and rifle calibers, and I am a victim of Magnum fever. In my case, 300WSM.

Dillon does not publish a 300WSM conversion kit for a 650, so I contacted them. It took me 6 tries

1) Sent an e-mail, no response

2) First guy I got on the phone said "why would you ever load that on a 650?"

3) Next try: "Can't load 300WSM on a 650, the shortness of the cartridge causes a 'timing' problem". Huh?

4) Called again, guy said no published info, so I'll have the sales manager call you. No return call for 3 days.

5) Called again. "No info available. Round is too new and not many people using it (hogwash), so we haven't worked up a kit."

I did a little homework - looked at cartridge drawings and found rounds with a similar case footprint. Made up my list of parts that I thought would work.

6) Called again. This guy was helpful. Told me why there was no kit - they don't have a case feed adaptor big enough to allow a WSM (300, 270, etc) to drop through. He confirmed that all the other parts I had listed should work. He HELD ON THE LINE WHILE I WENT AND GOT A 300WSM CASE, A LARGE ADAPTOR, AND CALIPERS! We did a little measuring and I could tell that all that was needed was that the adaptor needed to be opened up a little. I ordered the parts.

When the parts came, I checked it all out, and they were pretty close. I needed 2 mods - the one above (opening up the adaptor), and the locator pins were just a little tight. I used sandpaper wrapped around a 30-06 case stuck in a drill press on the adaptor (it is aluminium), and the sandpaper on the pins in the drill press.

My 650 now loads 300WSM with no problem. And yes, they are accurate - .75" at 300yds out of a production Savage 12VBSS. One 8 point buck and 2 does at 400, 275 and 250 yards.

I think I should have gotten the answer that I got on the 6th attempt on the first attempt. I know I'm not the first to ask about the WSM cartridge, and it would seem simple for Dillon to have a canned answer. Even if it is "The parts need mod, and we won't replace moded parts, so purchase at you own risk"

Hi all,

My experiences with them over the phone have been great. I have a used 550 of late 80's vintage that they have always supported. The thing is pretty worn and it developed a tendency to break primer seating punches every 1 or 2 k .45s. Not a huge deal but it was happening. I set the press up for .40 for the first time in about 2 years and noticed that there was major drag on the punch. It would just not align vertically. What it turned out to be was that the primer slide was so worn, the punch was no longer perpendicular to the shell plate. Called Dillon (or Dillion if you prefer) and they sent a new slide assy (free) and all is well. I almost feel guilty.

My one (and probably only) in person encounter did not go as well. Earlier this year, I decided to get some more dies and a powder measure to start loading some .40 open rounds. I thought I might visit the store on my way to Area 2 this year. I left early and fought through some construction traffic and waited about 10 hours to make that left turn onto Frank Lloyd Wright from the north 101 loop. Got to the store to buy the stuff and there was one guy at the counter talking on the phone. He was clearly chatting with a friend about going (or not going) to the Area 2 match. He did not even acknowledge my presence for about 10 min as I looked around. When he finally got off the phone and talked to me he came across as a typical gunshop a_-hole, all attitude and bad karma. Was a real letdown compared to how I have been treated on the phone. I went in thinking I might be able to get a tour or something and I left really pissed about adding about an extra hour to my drive from Ca just to meet this prick. Didn't catch his name and didn't care to. I guess everyone could have a bad day but still, a disappointment.

The weekend just got better from there. Had a good match, did pick up the stuff I needed, so all worked out for the best.

Nope, they ain't perfect but they are still hard to beat when it comes to service! If they made cars I would buy one (but that blue color would take some time to get used to!)

Happy holidays!

Chuck

sincityshooter- I broke the same part on my 650 last week! I called Dillon and had the part at my house without a hassle in just a few days. I love the press, and having that kind of service to keep it running is awesome. I believe I will be a lifetime Dillon customer.

I have a 550 that I bought in 1988 and it is still going very strong after a couple hunnert' k through it. Every time something has broken (not that often), or I have managed to break something with my own ham handed technique (just as often), they have sent the part lickety split and never once charged me for anything. I even tried to pay for a part that I broke, admitted that it was my stupidity, offered to pay the $4.65 that the part cost, but they insisted on sending it no charge anyway. You can't argue with that kind of service.

Regards,

Dear Chuck S

I am fortunate enough to live in Scottsdale AZ. I moved here from the socialist republic of NY. My wife and I came for a long weekend to find a place to live. We found a place and I said let's go to Dillon. Being a long time customer you can imagine my excitment. I was greated imediatley on arrival and explained that we were in the process of relocating. They said,"welcome to America". LOL.

I receieved a tour of the facility (awsome) they wrote down all the matches on a weekly basis for us. Gave us directions to the ranges. We became the best of freinds with Tim, Ryan and Dave. We meet at Rio one Saturday, Tim brought out his subgun for my wife and I to shoot. Never had that stuff in NY. Nor had I ever fired one.

The point of the whole story is that Dillon has the best customer service because the people are the best. I am not sure how or why your experience wasn't great. I have made some of the best freindships just walking in the door and saying,"Hi were new here and we like to shoot could you tell us the schedules and were to go?" There customer service is great too. We know that...

I am going to celebrate the holidays with my freinds. Merry Christmas to you all!

Chuck, the primer slide/punch issue is well known. I have gone through 2 sets of slides so far and each have eventually ended up with the punch out of vertical alignment with the set screw tight. Dillon has replaced all of them gratis but has yet to offer an explanation for it.

Brian, it looks to me like some of the castings for the primer slides are soft in that area.....The hole is actually becoming oblong and allowing the punch to lean over slightly when the screw is tightened. The current one has not yet exhibited any issues after about 5K rounds so far.
