ysrracer
I've got a 617 that spits lead, and is filthy to shoot. I also have a 1960 M17 that doesn't. I bought a little tool to check the forcing cones, before I send it in for gunsmithing. Here's the tool

ysrracer
What do you guys think? Send it in? Is the M17 the correct forcing cone?
MikeBurgess
I re did the forcing cone on my 617 for the same reason, I don't think you will have any issues.
Toolguy
Yep - forcing cone needs to be bigger and/or cylinder timing. A lot of guns now have the hand too wide, which pushes the chamber centerline past the centerline of the barrel. Need to check alignment with a range rod. MWP
Timing issue like Warren said. My 617s with custom barrels don’t have forcing cones, we just broke the hard edge.
AzShooter
I had to ream the forcing cone on my 617 because it was spitting lead. Once done I had no more problems. You can buy a kit from Brownell's. If you shoot a lot of revos it's worth being able to do it yourself. If you have friends with revolvers go together to get the tools. AzShooter
That's the kit. Go for it. You may need to buy another reamer for the .22.

Lately it seems like that’s the only choice. I feel like the market is a little dry for new guns right now.
S&W627shooter
My 627 "Performance Center" revo leaded up badly all around the cylinder and especially between the top of the forcing cone and the top strap. My gunsmith used a tool to shave off a little of the forcing cone to increase the cylinder gap, and I was disappointed that the face of the cone was not even square with the cylinder until he fixed it. Now it seems to be building up less lead. Edited October 3, 2021 by S&W627shooter

ysrracer
Ok, I had my gunsmith finish chamber ream the cylinder, and re cut the forcing cone. I took it to the range today, and.... and... and... Meh, it's about the same but that new forcing cone sure looks pretty
