Merlin Orr
I just can't believe that "pollsters" would be slanted or biased in their compillations of data! Huh???? This reply is TIC for those who don't know me.
Rob Boudrie
Even the state of Massachusetts licenses 15 year olds for the unsupervised posession of rifles and shotguns (standard capacity only).

Ron Ankeny
I see my home state of Wyoming has the largest percentage of unsecured, loaded handguns in the home. At least according to the poll. We have had several firearms related deaths involving children in Wyoming. One of them was a student of mine who managed to shoot his brother in the head. Of course the mean spirited kids at school nicknamed him "killer". Kids can be cruel. Another death involved siblings living not far from a school where I taught many years ago. One of the grandparents is an aquantance of mine. The kids were playing around with the "home defense" pistols while the parents were away. Again, little junior was shot in the head. We all know we can't legislate laws that will absolutely protect stupid people from themselves. As long as folks have unsecured guns mixed with unsupervised children, we will have kids killing themselves and others "accidentally". It's just the price of doing business in a free democracy. Rob Boudrie
Back on topic - I hate to see the term "child" used to describe someone who is able to legally drive a car, enlist in the military, or be specifically licensed by the state to posess firearms without supervision. The press will say "child shooting" rather than "young adult who is old enough to legally handle firearms and hunt without supervision".

EricW
I find it fascinating how guns are always singled out from all the stupid sh*t we did as youths for work and play. In farm country, running around with loaded guns is one of the safer activities compared to just about any job in agriculture. Every harvest season we went through: - Fires - getting trapped downwind of a wheat fire was bad, very bad... - People getting chopped in two when the bed of the wheat truck fell down on them. (This was a surprisingly frequent event.) - People getting sucked into combines. - People getting electrocuted while moving irrigation pipe. The general issue was contacting overhead wires with the pipe. The accidents were incredibly ugly. Limbs were torched into what looked like burnt firewood. - Wrecking trucks and/or combines. Rolling a combine was hardly an infrequent event in the hills. - Grain Elevator dust explosions. A big elevator blowing up was damned near like having a daisy-cutter go off. Most of these accidents involved kids aged 14-18, because that's who did the work in the summers. I won't even go into what I did in a typical summer job work day/night, because you probably wouldn't even believe me if I told you. I guess if all you did as a kid was sit on your ass and eat twinkies between skateboarding and shoplifting, guns seem pretty dangerous.

tightloop
When we were kids, my brother and did things with an axe that would make the regular urban dweller pale...not to mention, hay hooks, brush hogs, and the occasional irritated bull, a colt feeling his oats, or simply riding a pine tree to earth from about 25 or 30 feet... Eric: According to the medical community, kids sitting on their asses eating twinkies is actually a lot more dangerous than guns. Especially if they chase the twinky with a soda pop. I know for a fact watching porn and eating Cheetos is an extreme health hazard but I don't see folks trying to ban Cheetos. The activity is so hazardous it turned my private parts orange.
