3GN Classification?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to understand the Classification System.

I was under the impression you need to shoot a minimum number of qualifying matches to get a classification. But I know some shooters who have shot a lot of matches and are still listed as "unclassified." So I'm confused as to how one gets classified in 3GN? Thanks for any assistance.

http://memberships.3gunnation.com/content/htm here are 3GN nation rules. Believe you can shoot a match with out shooting a classifier.

There are other rule sets out there from other groups and clubs that do "outlaw" matches.

That link doesn't seem to work: "The page you've requested could not be located, or is unavailable at this time."

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I'm trying to determine what it takes to get a 3GN classification. I realize it isn't necessary to have a classification to shoot in a match.

OK, I finally found the following on the 3GN site (was tricky to locate):

Shooters will be divided by FIREARMS division. Divisions are as follows: Unlimited (U), Factory (FA), Practical (P), Heavy Sport (HS), Heavy Optics (HO), Unlimited PCR (UPCR), Optics PCR (OPCR), Irons PCR (IPCR), Unlimited 22 (U22), Practical 22 (P22), and Factory 22 (FA22). 3GN has implemented a ranking system so that shooters can determine where they rank amongst other shooters across the country and have a goal to move toward. Each division will be divided into 6 classes. A shooter's class will be determined by the score of the first Classifier Stage shot by the club member. After shooting more than 4 unique classifiers, only the top 4 scores will contribute to the shooters ranking and overall points. It is through this method that a shooter will move up through the classes. (Updated 3/25/2016)

Percentages are listed below:
Pro 95-100% Semi-Pro 84-94.99% Expert 75-84.99% High Marksman 60-74.99% Marksman 40-59.99% Amateur 2-39.99%

Based on the above, I'm still not clear. It states "A shooter's class will be determined by the score of the first Classifier Stage shot by the club member." I've shot a Classifier Stage, so why don't I have a classification? This also doesn't explain why I've looked up friends and other shooters who have shot more than four Classifier Stages and STILL don't have a classification?

If you are not a 3GN member and/or your classifier is not submitted to 3GN then you might was well have not shot it in regards to classification. You should be able to see your classifier scores when you login to the 3GN page.

Yes, I'm a member.

memberships.3gunnation.com/content/html/clubseriesinfo.pdf It looks like to get a classification you have to shoot at a 3gn nation affiliated club and be 3gn nation member.

Sorry late to the party. Ask the club you shot with.

Wow. This is harder than I expected. Yes I'm shooting at a 3GN affiliated club, and yes I'm a 3GN member.

If you don't see your scores when you go to "Upcoming Matches, Scores & Classification " section on the welcome screen then the club has not submitted them yet. Normally clubs will charge you a fee to submit your scores, like $3 per classifier.

Much, much harder than I expected. Yes I'm shooting at a 3GN affiliated club, yes I'm a 3GN member, and yes I can see my scores.

Then maybe, and I am just spitballing here, you should ask 3 Gun Nation instead of people in a forum on Enos????

Perhaps (and I too am just spitballing here) if you have nothing valuable to add you shouldn't post?

I didn't anticipate this to be so difficult a question to answer.

It also seems your 4 Classifiers now have to be in the same year to create a Classification that sticks.

I had shot two 3GN matches with a Classifier stage in 2014 as a member. I passed on the $3 per classifier upload by the first club. The second club uploads them all without charging. After a single 2014 shotgun/rifle Classifier I was listed as a Pro in Factory for 2015, which I knew wasn't right and was likely a result of having minimal data to work with. That 'Classification' still sticks today on my Upcoming Matches page, where I am listed in Factory, Classified as Pro for the 2016 Western Regional that l registered for in late 2015.

Fast forward to 2016, I shot a 6 stage 3GN Classifier match in March and botched a couple of the stages with a new rifle. My scores were uploaded and with the 4 'best and current' scores I was at High Marksman in Factory, yet was ranked 3rd in Factory for the Club Series in points. My 'best' score was dropped (from 2015) and my 4 best (of the current) were used for my current Classification.

While it's arguably better than IDPA's Classification system (where I am currently a Master(isk) in SSP due to their recent revision of times), the 3GN Classifier system has flaws too. Based on YouTube, there are 3GN clubs running many of these stages wrong and as a result there are mid-pack shooters setting times that would be tough for even the Pro Series shooters to pull off. For instance, allowing use of dump boxes for support on rifle plate rack stages or use of steel that is much larger than specified in the stage diagram because that's all the club has.

While many hate shooting classifiers, making it a background part of the Pro Series would give everyone real data, sanctioned by 3GN to set the Classification levels for the Club Series. A single 2014 classifier stage also shouldn't set your Classification for a 2016 Regional, but that appears to be what has happened in my case.

If you didn't shoot 4 separate 3GN Classifier Stages in one year and have them all uploaded by the club, you will probably not have a Classification until you do.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding! That's the answer I was looking for. It explains not only my situation, but the others I'm looking at. Four qualifiers in the same calendar year. Thanks so much!

I thought the classifications were bought? Like out of a bubble gum machine or something. Does your local club not have the classifier machine? Next to the temporary tattoos?

That comment almost made me spray some perfectly good alcohol all over my monitor.

My local range does not use the classification system. What is the advantage of getting a classification from 3gn nation. Only thing I could see is that it allows you to shoot one of their regionals?

Close. Shoot them till you do well then cherry pick the results. Hence, " classifier matches" .... At $3 per shooter, per classifier, it's a cash cow for 3GN.

People are far too lazy to try and find the answers to their own questions. They like to post them on forums so that others who are not qualified can take a spitball shot at answering them. So, what scope should I buy? I want to win scope tac and I know that if I had the right scope I could run the table on the long range stage. I already have some 77grain hand loads and Speedcross shoes, all I need is the right scope, tell me what to buy! Oh, I only have $300.

Just to keep this post on the track it started on, classifiers are stupid, just a way for organizations to sneak extra money from shooters.

Come on Stlhead, be honest, trying to find something on the 3GN webpage is like trying to find a man who doesn't play the "deaf joke" every chance they get! :roflol:
