Cobra5
I'm so new I screwed up my first post! lol.... I bought a new Accu Shadow from CZC late last fall that was a customer cancellation. I figured WTH since I wanted to try out USPSA anyway. I'm a rank beginner to pistol competition, & I'm looking for some advice on which way to go regarding belts, holsters, & mag pouches. The amount of choices is staggering, & I'm not sure which would be the best way to go. Also, if anyone has any suggestions, tips, tricks, or rules of thumb that would smooth out the transition from rank beginner would be greatly appreciated! fastlane604
Dry fire practice is very helpful. Ben Stoeger has good books on the subject.
JRM83
Go here and buy 6 magazines: http://www.gregcotellc.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=591 Now buy a set of 6 base pads: http://shop.springerprecision.com/product.sc?productId=252&categoryId=42 And belt, holster, mag pouches: http://www.benstoegerproshop.com/BSPS-BOSS-DOH-Holster-Ghost-Pouches-DAA-Belt-p/boss-kit.htm While you're at BSPS consider making a dry fire target kit and picking up a few other odds and ends. lstone
^^^^ I agree with JRM83. the minimum mags you want on your belt is 4. If unsure you want to pursue this avenue on the cheap you can buy 2 double mag pouches and a standard Blade-tech paddle holster too.. look in the classifieds and you occasionally see belts and holsters for sale. Just get to the range for your first match. But until you do go to the web and look at dry fire drills. Draw and reloads are where most seconds are lost in beginners. Just remember the first thing you want to do is Be SAFE at the range. you will not run with the big dogs right from the git go but you will have fun. PS when the buzzer goes off the first time you will forget all you have practiced

And you kinda end up with this... I use CR Speed belt and Pouches, with the BOSS and Blade-tech holster. I did swap the main spring out for a CGW 8.5# main spring. Last year was my first year of competitive shooting, I'll be a C class shooter in Production after 1 more match. Forgot to add, at first I sucked with it since I was used to 1911/2011. After a week or so of dry fire, I became familiar with the AS. Also practice lowering the hammer as part of LAMR. Cobra5
Thanks for the insight... I went ahead and purchased a CR Speed Deluxe belt, a Boss DOH holster, and 5 DAA Racer mag pouches. I had already bought a 5-pack of the plated 17rd mags from CZC when I was down in AZ in January. http://czcustom.com/cz759mm17rdmagplated.aspx Hopefully, these were good gear choices. I have no idea if I'll need new/additional base pads for the mags. I figured I'd leave them stock for now & see how it goes... Would anyone else suggest getting the base pads right from the jump? If so, why and which ones? Thanks again! Edited March 15, 2015 by Cobra5

This^. The only thing I would change is I would get lots more mags and base pads. I have 4 dry fire only mags. They get dropped a lot and don't go in the gun at matches. Instead of loading dummy rounds for dry fire mags, I have them weighted with bare bullets and have a snap cap in the tip position so they load into the mag well smoothly. I have 12 live fire mags. I go to practice and matches pretty well loaded so I have more time for other things. All of my mags have Springer pads. One nice things about Springer pads is that you can get them for the 17 round Mec-Gars and the 18 round SP-01 mags. When done, they are functionally the same. JRM83
I have taken the approach of not upgrading unless I have a good reason to. I bought the springer pads because the factory base plates on my mec gar mags would pop off when they hit the ground. The springer pads don't. Its also easier to grab the mag with the springer base pads.
Cobra5
My rig is now starting to come together for my rookie season in USPSA production. Here's what I'm going with so far: CZC ACCU Shadow CR Speed Deluxe belt BOSS Blade-Tech holster (5) plated CZC 17rd mags (6) SP base pads (5) DAA Racer mag pouches Do I need to mod the mags with springs, or should I be good to go for now? Anything else equipment related I might need to address?

Maybe consider 1 more mag. Still only need 5 pouches as that start mag can be in pocket etc and go into the gun for the start leaving 5 on the belt.Edit: just saw 6 bases. I'm guessing you have the 1 factory mag and 5 plated. Edited March 23, 2015 by BeerBaron
himurax13
You can cut the costs a little by going with the 16 round mags and rubber basepads ($21 + $9) at Greg Cote LLC. The 16 round mags have been flawless for years for me. Edited March 26, 2015 by himurax13
GJGary
I use 16 round mecgar $20.95 + $8.95 rubber base pad from Greg Cote and also never had issues after years of use.

I just don't see the point, unless one just likes to buy jewelry for one's gun (and there's nothing wrong with that, btw). I've seen stock cz basepads come off, but I've never had (or seen) an issue with the aftermarket mecgar mag pads. selecw
Can someone educate me on the need for so many mags in USPSA... If the round count is 32 max (correct me if I'm wrong on that), isn't 4 a realistic number for Production, and 3(?) for Open or Limited?
himurax13
Can someone educate me on the need for so many mags in USPSA... If the round count is 32 max (correct me if I'm wrong on that), isn't 4 a realistic number for Production, and 3(?) for Open or Limited? Well just because the round count is 32, some people often shoot more than the minimum If you have a mag where the top round has nosedived, it is much faster to go to the next mag. Mags get dirty and cleaning them between each stage is a pain. Magazine springs have a finite life. If you have more mags, it is easier to spread the load. The ideal situation for me is a minimum of 8 working mags per gun. Sometimes I like going to a match with all of the mags that I plan on using are already loaded so I don't have to load any magazines on game day. mrpredictable
Sometimes a situation comes up where you would like to reload before getting a completely empty magazine, between 2 6 round arrays for example. It's also nice to have a spare mag if you have a malfunction or make up shots. I carry 5 on the belt because I ran into a situation where I would have preferred more than 4. himurax13
I was talking about 4 on your belt, not 4 total. When I am playing production, I wear 5 on my belt. 3, if I am playing limited. Sometimes malafunctions occur, sometimes the stage requires you to reload earlier than needed. It is always better to have and not need etc...
