opensol
How can you tell from a spent 45acp casing if it is for small or large pistol primer? Thanks.
Kraj
The primer pocket is a different size? If you dont notice and try to put a large primer into a small pocket you can for sure tell the difference.
Steve RA
Or, if you put a SP or SRP in a large primer case it will just fall right back out. It's pretty easy to tell them apart by looking at the bottom of the case.
Youngeyes
Keep one of each and use as a guide. It's very apparent.
Haraise
Has one been shown better than the other for competition?
Steve RA
No, but if everything else you load are one size or the other you can just stock one size of primers - will only work with small primers. Large rifle and large pistol are two different depths to primer cup.
jakharath
I've seen Federal, Speer and Blazer small primer 45acp brass. It's interesting to shove a large primer into a small primer pocket when one sneaks in.
njl
Just verify your load "works" with SP if you developed it with LP. Depending on the exact primers used and powder, you may see a small reduction in velocity.
jstagn
I noticed a small decrease in velocity with the small primers in 45acp. Good advice to double check with chrono before you load 1000s...
Snapcap
I happen to have one of the little SP bastards here handy. Large primer on the left, small primer on the right.
racknrider
45 SPP are all trash. Send them all to me. Somebody had to say it.
njl
I noticed a small decrease in velocity with the small primers in 45acp. Good advice to double check with chrono before you load 1000s... Or before you go to a match and go minor...or go to a match planning to shoot minor, and find that they don't reliably cycle your gun. i.e. some will say they're interchangeable. I'm not one of them. Though, I had the latter of those things happen just switching brands of LPP with ammo I knew was minor to start with. I just didn't know it was right on the edge of being able to function the slide. Steve RA
I use SRPs and didn't notice any change in gun operation or velocity (yes, with chrono) but that might not be true with SPPs. As mentioned several times above, be sure to check before going off to a match or loading a large quantity.
zzt
Well, if it helps any, my major load uses 5.0gr Solo 1000 and a WLP primer to make 171PF. Using a WSP primer drops that to 164PF.
Steve RA
Try a small rifle primer and see what that does for you. I use Tula KVB-223 in 9mm and .45ACP and have been using them in .223/5.56 but am going to start using KVB-556 in rifle since I've got 5,000 of them. zzt
I'll give that a shot Steve. I tried CCI 550 magnum primers and that didn't boost it enough.
jstagn
ZZT, correct me I am wrong, but don't the Winchester large pistol primers say for standard AND magnum loads? My velocity increased 30 fps with Winchesters large pistol primers, I never had any small, but they may be for standard loads only, adding to the difference in velocity ??????? gng4life
The Federal and CCI SPP and SPM didn't have any significant increase/decrease in velocity for me. I loaded both up for 9Major loads but no changes except for minor variations. I can see differences in velocities between large and small primers but in most loads, you won't notice much difference in standard and magnum primers. zzt
jstagn, that may be the case. I don't know. It may also be powder related I do know that the WLP is universally faster than the CCI 300. The degree varies with the powder. It's much wider with N310 than S 1000, for instance. Interestingly, with my Clay Dot load the CCI 300 is slower than the CCI 550 (Magnum) by 27fps. I didn't try the CCI 500.
