GreenDragon64
Here's what happened to me at the Cavern Cove Multigun match in northeast Alabama yesterday. I cleaned the shotgun targets on stage 1 and then had a great A zone hit with my XDM 5.25. 100% accuracy for the stage. After that first and only trigger pull, I felt a sharp pain at the base of my trigger finger at the joint, saw a fireball about the size of a lemon protruding from the half dollar-sized hole that has made its home in my Springfield's frame, and then felt some small particulates hit my right cheek and nose. Somewhere along the line the pistol was no longer in my grasp and ended up on the ground.Catastrophic case failure. I believe the evidence the case gives us, looks like there was a combination of a hot 9mm load and it being shot out of battery. Top portion of the case is fine, but the bottom is blown out. There is a bulge above the rim at the bottom of the case that matches perfectly to the area right outside of the chamber. There is a lead ring where the chamber indexes off the case mouth and the barrel is extremely dirty, more so than one shot should have left it. RammerJammer
wow. it awesome that you weren't seriously injured. That is an awful place for it to blow out.

RIIID
That is what a case failure does to a polymer frame, if the slide was back("out of battery") the firing pin safety block would have stopped the firing pin from hitting the primer. Hopefully the top end is useable. Rich
GreenDragon64
Thank you for chiming in, Rich. It looks ok except for the extractor is a little bent. Can I call Springfield and order a new frame?
WidowsSon683
I dont know Rich. It looked pretty trashed in the pic. Also green, you are lucky to still have use of the hand. That had to have hurt like he'll. I probably would have crapped my pants.
WidowsSon683
Springfield will not sell frames or slides. You would have to send the whole gun in and hope they replaced it.
Loves2Shoot
Springfield will not sell frames or slides. You would have to send the whole gun in and hope they replaced it. They have replacement frames, and can replace the damaged parts at a reasonable price.
GreenDragon64
Thank you for the information, Scott. Should I take out the trigger kit before I send it in?

GreenDragon64
xdmmaster, it was a reload. That is why I'm sure the kaboom is on me, hopefully just the frame and the extractor needs to be replaced/worked on.
Reshoot
This happened to me, several years ago, shooting a Taurus 24/7 Pro. An incident that I will not soon forget! You and I are both VERY lucky!

practical_man
Green Dragon That happened to me years ago with a Glock 21 and factory PMC ammo. I am glad it was a plastic pistol. I didn't get hurt badly and the pistol was easily repaired. Glad you didnt get hurt too badly. Hope getting repair parts goes smoothly.
chevyoneton
Hmmm, slap a little JB Weld on that and get back in the game. Seriously though, glad you are OK and hope things work out with your gun. Keep us informed.

DDustin
Interested to see what Springfield does for you and how much it costs. Your hand is a miracle, glad you're ok.
GreenDragon64
I had a piece of grip tape on the oval contour where it exploded on me. I bet that piece of tape saved me from having a piece of frame piercing my trigger finger. Also of note, my frame is cracked down the grip over halfway to the magwell and a crack is wrapped around to the trigger opening.
KSH
What primers were you using?
dskinsler83
I always watch my cases to be sure the powder is right where it needs to be. What type bullet (brand) and is there any sign if leading in the barrel?
GreenDragon64
I was using Fiocchi primers. 147gr Falcon bullet. Honestly, I don't know if it is leaded. I haven't touched it since I bagged it last weekend. Edited February 3, 2014 by GreenDragon64
