StraightUp_OG
Base setup is the cost of a high end open gun.
StraightUp_OG
Thanks, you are an inspiration! I hope I can make stuff half as good as you do. Thanks as well! And with that bad boy you should be able to do anything you want!
dskinsler83
Well that ain't as bad as I was thinking but still lol! What do you have in your mini mill conversion? Is it a wash or you still cheaper
ajg308
Damn! I bet that cost a pretty penny I worked with Matt at PM and he put together a real nice package deal for me. $6k shipped. A buddy and I went in together, but it gets to stay at my house. Edited January 10, 2014 by ajg308
StraightUp_OG
The initial outlay was $3500 including the cost of materials for the enclosure. The nice thing is when I upgrade, all the stuff I have acquired since then will work on the next mill. Now if I had a buddy that I could have spit the cost with I would have gone bigger! That's a great deal and a great friend indeed! Edited January 10, 2014 by StraightUp_OG
kevinj308
Congratulations on the pm45!!!!! Lots of mill envy here too. Kevin
donnyglock
Congrats on your PM45. I looked real hard at that mill as well. We need pics when she arrives. Home smithing is on the rise !!!!
dskinsler83
I looked at a mini mill for a little thing I am working on and they seem more expensive now. I don't really need CNC right off maybe DRO and just a basic knowledge which I will never have but oh well.
kevinj308
For what its worth dskinsler grizzly just came out with a g0704 with dro. Pretty cool package if cnc isn't in the near future. http://www.grizzly.com/products/Mill-Drill-with-Stand-and-DRO/G0759
ajg308
Thanks guys, I definitely will send some pics and updates. Right now I have to make a hole in the garage and get 220 installed.
tanfogliocoe
I am completely ignorant when it comes down to machining. Would a machine like this be good to start off with and then upgrade from there. http://www.grizzly.com/products/Mill-Drill-with-Stand-and-DRO/G0759
hanau
While searching for cnc conversion i ended up finding OG'S thread here and read thru it and ended up going with the same mill that he built. Think i am right around $3k still need a few things to go with it. I eventually will like to close it in for using coolants, but while i am still larnig to use it i am cutting wood. it is a little more forgiving than metal. One of the first thing made while learning. 2 days to figure out how to make the gcode and about 15 mins to cut it.
a matt
Congrats. Heck Enos can start a section in the forum for mill work. Good news for us voyeurs, more work to admire. cheers gents.
StraightUp_OG
First attempt at Cerakoting. It is quite a process and is all prep. Took me all day to do 2 guns and they are not without issues. I have a little orange peeling on a grip safety and one drip on one of the extractors that I did not catch and I had to do the slide twice on this gun. I started to get the hang of it but I still need to find the sweet spot with my spray gun and I definitely need improved lighting. I will shoot this for a while then bast it and do it again after some more fine tuning. But all things considered it turned out better than I thought it would for the first time. Now need to dial in a load. Could only find AutoComp so I grabbed 8lb. If you have a pet load lay it on me. I have 10MM mags so I can load long. Czhase
OG, Does the checkering still have a good bite once it is coated? I plan to cerakote my first gun in the next couple of weeks and that was one of my concerns.
StraightUp_OG
Plenty of bite. The blasting sharpens it up and if coated correctly will only add .001", feels good!
B45C22
That is beautiful. Really really nice work, Bud. Keep it up.
donnyglock
Nice job OG. Spraying Cerakote can be tricky. The blacks are thin so they go on fast. Its easy to get orange peel if it goes on to thick. If you dial the flow down to much then the finish becomes rough. Gun looks fantastic!
StraightUp_OG
Thanks again guys. You ain't kidding it goes on fast. About the only thing that happens fast in the process.
ltdmstr
Looks nice. What did you blast with (beads, grit, pressure)?
StraightUp_OG
Thanks! 120 Grit Aluminum Oxide and I have a little compressor so max pressure at 100lbs and my smallest nozzle. But after consuming the Cerekote propaganda I will be switching to 100 grit because the 120 does break down quickly as mentioned in the instructions. But the 120 leaves a sweet finish on the gun. ltdmstr
Thanks. I have 100 lb of 120 grit glass beads but haven't had a chance to try them on anything. Hoping to do that when I get back from the SHOT Show.
kevinj308
For anybody out there reading this most awesome thread and considering jumping into cnc here's the beginning of what will be a series of blog articles by Bob Warfield on bench top cnc mills. Cnccookbook is a pretty cool resource anyway for anybody looking at or already into this. Particularly the g-code tutorial! http://blog.cnccookbook.com/2014/01/08/ultimate-benchtop-cnc-mini-mill-part-1-the-donor-mill/ Kevin
