G-ManBart
I figured I would get a respond like this thanks for all your help Well, you're already taking part in the other thread about which Limited guns people like...sorta covers the same thing right? Never fear, I took about five minutes, and put together a greatest hits compilation for you....think of it as a buyer's guide to Limited guns. It covers which gunsmith to pick, 5" versus 6", standard or long/wide dustcover, and sight tracker versus conventional barrel. G-ManBart
Do any of you guys have any experience with the SV metal grip? And if so are they better compaired to the polymer grip ie. heavier for recoil control or just more comfortable? <sigh> Alrighty, that didn't seem to work, so we'll try a different idea....it may seem pedantic, but it's not meant to be anything other than helpful (for everybody) There's a theme here....somebody gets interested in a new gun or project, they then start a whole bunch of threads asking the same questions that have been asked multiple times before. That spreads out the information on one topic into lots of smaller threads, rather than having it in one or two places, where it's easier for everybody to find. So, it's not that people mind answering questions, it's that adding more threads on the same topic makes it harder for everyone; harder/slower for you to get your answer, harder for other folks to find the same answers, and harder for the folks who take the time to answer the questions. I almost put threads on the metal grips in my list above, but figured that such a long list of threads sort of made the point that searching is productive and usually quite easy. So, before you move on to "fiber optic or not?", "gun finishes, which is best?", "Recoil Master or standard guide rod?", "which magazine components?", "slide lock back or not?", "what front sight width?", "Shok buffs, yes or no?", etc, get a little crazy and see if you can find what you're looking for. The search function here works pretty well, but you do have to make sure you're in the right area, and sometimes try a couple of variations. I got a little wild and crazy, and typed "SVI grip" in the upper right corner search window, while in the 1911-style Pistols forum and got this: Oh, and to answer your question, I don't think the metal grips are worth anywhere near what they cost...I can make a plastic grip fit my hand better, and I can get the weight similar in a number of different wants. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=117309&view=findpost&p=1329398 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=103336&view=findpost&p=1176540 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=100677&view=findpost&p=1148383 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=93198&view=findpost&p=1068612 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=89763&view=findpost&p=1030761 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83346&view=findpost&p=963426

G-ManBart
Alright guys sorry again this will be my last time to post anything on hear period. I just try to get some help on a new platform for me but it seems people on here have more of a attitude that helpful. Its a forum for people to find info not to catch attitudes from members. It was fun while it lasted. I took the time to search and link a whole pile of threads for you to get the answers you wanted. I didn't have to do that. I tried the subtle approach (so did a forum moderator), but it didn't seem to work, so I politely explained why it's better to use existing threads than starting new ones, and carefully pointed out I was honestly trying to be helpful...but for everybody, not just you. If you call that having an attitude, I'm not sure what being helpful would look like. Did you see anybody else spending time to get you the answers you wanted? It's gotten to the point that frequently when one of the routine questions comes up, people just ignore the thread entirely because they're tired of answering the same thing over and over...I'm guessing you wouldn't have appreciated that. I should have added that the forum mods spend a lot of time consolidating multiple threads on the same topic. They do that for the reasons I mentioned....keep the same info in fewer places so it's easier for everyone to access. They're spending time doing all sorts of other things, and if we can help them out, it helps everybody on the forum
G34 CORDY
I understand that but this is a forum and people are going to ask the same question more than once. There wouldnt be new post if they didnt. You can only talk about so many things before it has been covered. But stop bashing people on here for simply asking a freakin question, if you have some anger to get rid of join a gym dont take it out on fairly new uspsa shooters like myself. BlueOvalBruin
I understand that a lot of this stuff has already been covered in other threads, but there's usually some new information in each one. I doubt this thread would be an exception. G34 Cordy, I have shot both types and my favorite so far is a 5" SVI short frame with a stainless grip, bull barrel, and triptopped slide. I like having the weight in my hand rather that out front. The weight in the grip seems to soak up the recoil just like a full dust cover but having it in tha hand makes the gun feel more nimble. It's all a matter of personal preference though. I am considering a 6" SV at the moment but haven't sent in the order yet, if you're interested in a 6" they have a great one. The SVI in general might cost you about $500 more or so than an equivalent custom STI. They are extremely nice though and feel like a complete system rather than a conglomeration of good parts. It doesn't really seem to work that way. Most questions are either a new topic, or a variation of a topic. In most cases, something as generic as SV or STI has been hashed over so many times, they simply merge new threads into the older ones...more work for the moderators. There was no bashing of any kind. If you feel there was, please, contact a forum moderator and ask their opinion. I very carefully explained, more than once, why starting another version of the same topic was less helpful than posting in an existing thread. Starting into the "if you have anger, go to the gym" stuff is a lot more like bashing...just FYI. Actually, at this point, I really wish I hadn't posted all those helpful links. It's pretty awesome to spend time digging up posts for someone who then says you're bashing them Brian pinned this thread for just this sort of topic: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=55789&view=findpost&p=647148 Edited January 23, 2011 by G-ManBart

Jaxshooter
Gordy, frame for frame the STI and SV are the same. I have owned custom guns on both frames and do not have a preferance. Don't worry about the frame, shoot as many different types of Limited guns you can to see what you like or dislike about each. There are many excellent gunsmiths building guns for our sport. Look at guns made by different smiths and pick a gunsmith to build your gun. Talk with them about what you liked or disliked about the guns you shot and let them help you design it. They can compile the info from you and along with thier input I am sure you will end up with a gun suited to you and your shooting style. I have owned both 5" and 6" Limited guns and have determined that I like the feel of the 5" better and shoot it better than a 6". As far as Sight Tracker and conventional sight on slide models you just need to shoot each one and see if you have a preferance. I don not care for the metal grips on the SV/STI, the polymer grips feel softer in my hand when they recoil but that is me. There are plenty of people that like the metal grips also. I think if I was building a Limited gun with a metal grip I would just use a Caspian frame, but again thats me. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me and I will do my best to answer them. Edited January 23, 2011 by Jaxshooter
