  1. I have a SV 40 gun and a Para 40, that came with two mags. I didnt want to get extra mags for the Para, so looked at the mag catch and the slots for the SV mags, to understand the difference, went to a local muffel shop by the range and ask them to just add a spot weld to the ledge of the Para mag catch, came home and worked with the file, for about 15 mins. and presto! Para works with all the SV mags. thanks
  2. Rich at Canyon Creek can fit a SV trigger to your Para. Check him out.
  3. I like it!!!!! if I didnt any better, I would have thought it was a Matt Cheely gun!
  4. everything you said in this statement is true! For those who don't know, John Shaw was the IPSC US National Champion in 1980 and 1981. He was the first to win a National title with a 'Pin Gun' as they were known back then. In 1982 J Michael Plaxco was the first to the Nationals with a 1911 fitted with a compensator as we know them today. It is not hyperbole to say that the two most sinificant events in IPSC/USPSA shooting were John Shaw winning in 1980 with the first pin gun and Jerry Barnhart winning with a red dot in 1989. But you can not rule out BE winning Bianchi with a red dot? Everything prior to that was with iron sights. Now I cant remember if that was before Barnhart won the nationals with his red dot or not? Am sure someone will step in anc clarify all this. ) thanks
  5. very good advice and very well said from Duane Thomas.
  6. I bought a slighly used Bear Premier II, best 1911 I have ever had. After years of buying SA, Kimber, Paras, and Dan Wessons, none of them compared to this used Baer I got! If I can in the future, I will get another one. Better to have "Quality than Quantity". You could pay more but you couldn't get awhole lot better than a Premier II. IMO I would put the extra $$$ into a really good trigger job.
  7. first email frHi Pete, Todd and Robbie did not shoot a 6” sight tracker, they both shot 6" guns with lightened slides. No sight tracker or ribbed barrels. There is no sight tracker legal over 5” in 40 caliber at this point. John om J. Amidon; we can agree we all agree on this, no 6" STrackers. second email; Pete, I should have added that there are 6” iron sighted guns available in Limited, they have been approved for many years, STI and SV have made them for years, as the rules state, a complete gun or parts made by a manufacturer is allowed if 500 of those components have been made and available. John So, I guess anyone can make a 5" STracker on any kind of frame you want. Thanks for all the replies.
  8. If this is the case, then how would TJ's and TGO's 6 inch guns be legal? Or in matter of fact, anyone else who has a S_I, 6 inch sight tracker? TGO and TJ's 6" limited guns have a Bull and bushing barrel...no hybrids... i have a 6" sightracker but im a nobody yes, this is true TGO and TJ's guns are 6"/bull barrel but none of those were made in a 500 count to the public. Does, SA or Para make a 6"/40sw cal./wide body configuration, available to the public? No I don't so... So, why are those legal and not a Para 5" STracker? BTW, I did email J. Amodin with this question and when I get an answer, I will post it here. thanks its in the Gallery its actually my favorite steel gun shoots awesome with 140gr 40sw mouse fart loads im just waiting for it to be legal....
  9. If this is the case, then how would TJ's and TGO's 6 inch guns be legal? Or in matter of fact, anyone else who has a S_I, 6 inch sight tracker?
  10. am glad I asked before I did do it...
  11. Has anyone seen one? A Para/40 with a sight tracker barrel? Am going to replace my stock barrel and was wondering about a sight tracker barrel. I have only seen photos of the STrackers in S_I framed guns. I also thought about a 6" STracker barrel with a 5" slide. any thoughts on that concept? thanks
  12. Two events I remember about John Shaw. One was at the Steel Challenge, when it was held at the old range in Canyon Cyn, Calif. I had John's book with me and it had an error or misprint in it. He was under the vendor's tent with Jim Clark Sr. at their vendor table. I introduced myself to John Shaw and explained to him about the error in the book. He took the book from my hand and threw it across the tent and grab another one from Clark's table and signed it and handed to me. One other thing I do remember, when I attened the Nationals, in Dallas,TX. He drove up to one of the stages in a black 911 Porsche and parked in front where everyone could see it. Ray Chapman, I remember shooting with him on the same squad at a World match in Caracas, Venezuela. He didn't shoot fast but always shot A's. thanks
  13. thanks, for all the inputs! I did look at the XLR stock, and afew others like Mcgree and Competition Shooting Stuff. XLR was really cool. I will shoot it firts than decide but the action is definitly a long action but chambered in .308. I guess that could be good when swapping barrels? thanks again.
  14. Never had a MOR and was looking for something to get into. Came across at Turner's a "like new" Savage 10FP Tactical/308, for $300.00 dollars. I couldn't pass on it. Yes, I would have liked a Remington but 300.00 dollars, not too bad for a first timer wanting to learn. The only thing that is on my mind is the stock. I do want to change the stock and didn't want to go over on an expensive stock for a Savage rifle. Am thinkg Bell & Carson, less than 300.00 dollars, I can get a decent scope and still be under 1000.00 dollars. Funny thing is that the rifle is chamber for .308 but it has a long action receiver? I did see a Savage 110FP, 300 Win, with a Mcmillan A5 stock and cheapie stock/mount combo for 1200.00 dollars at a local pawn shop. I thought it was over priced, I did like the A5 stock but was thinking why would anyone mount a Mcmillan on a Savage? From what I have been reading on the Savage rifles, their not that bad of a rifle. Any suggestions as far as a stock or anything else would be appreicated. thanks
  15. I shoot a SV 40 and bought a use Para 40 with two mag tubes. I removed the mag catch from the Para and inserted the SV mag and saw exactly where the slot on the SV tube is compared to the Para tube. Went to the local muffler shop and asked them to weld a bead of weld on the Para mag catch ledge that inserts into the mag tube. Went home and began filing the ledge until it held the SV tube in place. Be working fine ever since. The only reason I bought the Para was because I had SV mags already and I knew this would work. And since I live in California, buying a set of Para tubes, springs, etc, would just not be worth it. Now I have a SV and Para 40 gun that use the same magazines. Its easy to do, just take time-out of your day and tear it apart and look at it, look at how things go together and work. I read alot of issues with shooters have with their guns, mags not locking back, not dropping out and so on and so on, and if you just tear it apart and piece it back together bit by bit, looking for where the problem is, you can generally fix it yourself and learn something about it. If not, there's plenty of good advice on this forum and good gunsmiths you can send your gun. good luck
  16. the only problem I see with the waist band techique, although it seems to have the least amount of movement, is if you are squatting behind a low port or something like that. squatting down and trying this might be a problem as to just using the vest pocket.
  17. In Patricks Sweeny's book about the 45acp, he states "remember this number .468". for crimping a 230 FMJ bullet. thats what I use with a 1.250 OAL. really as long as the round will fall in and fall out of the barrel chamber, you will be fine. also, check that the round does not extend pass the barrel hood. but always chrono your load because crimping and OAL will affect your velocity and the amount of powder you will need to make major. years ago at the Golden Eagle match in Indiana, I over heard Les Baer before he worked at SA talking with Rick Castlow about the crimping and Rick told Les, he crimps heavy, since the 45acp is a low pressure round. for what it worth...
  18. Can we see some pics of this? Also, if anyone have pics of the gun where Boland reversed the slide rails (ala CZ-75), could we see pics of that too? wasnt the P713 from B.Gray? the widen major 9 he built did have reverse rails but am sure the P7 were from Bruce.
  19. I had a Double "D" comp 45 singlestack from JB. I dreaded going to his shop for work, he would just talk on and on about his camera's or anything else. I didnt mind his conversations but what should have taken an hour or so, ended up the whole evening! I did see his "wide body" major nine pistol, he built by widening a standard frame 1911, I forget the name he gave the gun but he built it for J. Bartell. He was working out of a shop in the evenings, it was like a cave! He shared it with Bruce Gray and in the daylight hours the shop was used by Dean Wilkerson, which I believe it still here. The thing most different about the smiths back then was that, you just didnt really know when you would get your gun! Unless you paid up front or they liked you or you were doing them a favor in exchange and still that was no guarantee. I had guns from JB and Paul Lindenberge, when he had a shop here in S.Calif. Same deal from Paul, too.
  20. Am having a heck of a time finding Winchester large pistol primers for 45acp. I remember years ago when I started shooting I would get whatever I could, Winchester or Federal. Would Federal be alright to use? I would rather get the Federal over the CCI's. I only ask because on Gunbroker I can easily find the Federal primers. thanks
