  1. I've been looking at magwell options- I'm just trying to get a 1911 ready for dabbling in Singlestack, but I'm trying to do it as cheaply as possible. I saw these: Mako grips with an integrated magwell. They are about $25 shipped on Ebay. It seems like a great idea, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with these. Thanks! Hopefully the picture is attached successfully...
  2. It certainly helps me be more content with my glock. We've had a stormy relationship, but I think I'll stick it with her. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
  3. It would be interesting to recalculate his score based on him shooting major, and see his placement. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
  4. To everyone who worked hard to run the match, score it and upload results, Thank You! I don't want to diminish any of that hard work. I just wish USPSA on an organizational level would try to turn these matches into a user-friendly media event on some scale, where following along is easy and there is something more than just raw data to interpret. Maybe some captions telling how the match is going could be added to the facebook video posts, for a start?
  5. Thanks Chuck. That is a little too much work- looking up squad schedules? Guessing how long it will take to finish? USPSA needs to learn how to do media. We have such an exciting sport, yet this is how we market it.
  6. I've never really tried to follow the Nationals, but this year I'm wanting to see how some local shooters are doing. You would think the USPSA website would have some updates, news items or maybe make it easy to see whether there is still another day of shooting or if the results posted are final. I just want some real-time way to follow along. I guess I'm asking too much?
  7. I shoot a G35 in Limited and I just bought my first 1911, mainly as a range toy. My thinking was "if this works well for me then I'm ditching the glock and getting a 2011 for Limited". After shooting the 1911, I really appreciate the aggressive grip angle on the Glock, the lack of an external safety, the low bore axis and the general ergonomics. It would take me a LOT of practice to get as comfortable and fast with the 1911 or a 2011. I'm sure the fast trigger would eventually show it's advantages, but for now I am much more content with my Glock and I think I'll stick with it a while.
  8. well, I picked it up yesterday, cleaned it and oiled it. Slide to frame fit is tight, machining looks clean, and the trigger- wow. If I can ever get used to the grip angle difference between it and my Glock, I'll be getting rid of the Glock for a 2011 asap. I'm not going to change anything except grips and a magwell for now. Now to start loading 9mm...
  9. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, very helpful. I pick it up from my FFL on Tuesday and for now I'm just going to start loading 9mm and put a new recoil spring in it. If I have any issues then I'll get a couple mags, but for now I'll just see how she runs.
  10. Thanks for the replies. I may just pre-emptively get a 10lb recoil spring because I've read in a couple places that the PT1911 is too heavily sprung from the factory. I've looked at magwells online and it seems there are two kinds- the first has a mainspring housing integrated and the other seems to just hook over the grip screws and not include a mainspring housing. Is there an advantage one over the other? My mainspring housing is already checkered and the finish matches the rest of the gun, so I'd rather not spend more to replace something that is fine, unless there is a good reason to. (Forgive me if my 1911 parts terminology is incorrect)
  11. The catch detent, or whatever you call it, on your magazines will wear out and can make them unreliable. That's more of a slow building problem than a sudden breakage though.
  12. I normally shoot Limited with a .40 glock, but I just sold a Ruger sr22 that I had bought for my boys and ordered a stainless PT1911 in 9mm for just a couple hundred more. My intention is to set it up for singlestack competitively, yet be able to swap a recoil spring and have it run bunny fart loads for my boys to shoot. This is my first 1911 and 9mm. So, I know I need tripp mags, but... What recoil spring # should I get for uspsa, and is that the only spring I need to change to suit PF I load to? What bullet weight in 9mm is the go-to, like 180 is for .40? Is converting it to series 70 really that important? Are Wilson combat parts from brownells the way to go for that stuff? Any reason not to get the $30 hi-viz front sight, vs a much more expensive option? I'm mechanically inclined- can I still work on this thing myself? Can simple polishing of parts achieve a 3# trigger? Basically, what do you recommend I do to this thing? I've read a lot in the forums and could spend the next week digging through all the posts, but I'm hoping one of the many 1911 gurus here could set me straight quickly. I know I may get a lemon with the Taurus, but I really wanted a checkered front strap, front cocking serrations, stainless, full length guide rod and an ambi safety. I got all that for $515, so I'm not worried about swapping out some internal parts to make it run reliably, if needed.
  13. For the sake of the debate, I personally think that it's logical that not seeing your sights is faster. If you think of a continuum where far left is not seeing your sights, far right is hard focus perfect sight picture then the not-seeing your sights would be the fastest time and the absolute best sight picture would be the slowest. It matches our expectation on time for close vs far targets. To my C class mind, that makes perfect sense. To me the question is not "is it fast?" but "is it effective?". To which some far better shooters than me have said it is not effective...
  14. I think the division is a great idea- people see the open guns and want to try shooting with a dot, without spending ridiculous money. I'll never shoot Open, but I may one day try CO.
  15. GARD72977, I'd say you can save a lot of time. I recently shot a match and Ron Avery was on my squad. I asked him to scrutinize my stage, and after I shot it one of the questions he asked me was "What did you see?". since it was a close-target hoser stage, My reply was honestly "not much of my front sight". He acknowledged that it does seem to work on stages like that, but he said that that habit would "become my nemesis", which I took to mean that one day, at a higher level of performance, point shooting was going to start holding me back.
  16. My first 'real' pistol was a bersa, a thunder pro .40 ultra compact with the stainless slide. It was an excellent gun that ran 100%. The machining was nice, everything about it was quality. So, I'm looking forward to seeing this piece in person.
  17. I would buy the weight too, if it didn't require me to spend big bucks on a new race holster. My bladetech works great for me now. The frame weight puts the weight exactly where my gun needs it. Sometimes I think it's dumb for me to keep putting money into my glock, trying to make it into what I really want but can't afford... a steel Limited gun. When I make the switch one day, I think I'll miss all the tinkering and cheap parts to try.
  18. I only removed maybe 25% of it's thickness along about 2" of the rod. But yes, if it broke that would be a serious problem. I've got a chunk of brass I'm about to take out to the shop to cut into a tab that will mimic the mag releases sold at glockstore.com. The oem extended mag release came in the mail today. I'm disappointed- it's only about 1/32" taller than the one I took out. Not nearly enough difference for it to be sufficient.
  19. Okay, I have to admit it. This thing is too big and has been screwing me royally. I was .5 pts away from making B class and the last classifier I shot was a table start. Dropped the mag both starts. I've also been dropping mags here and there on stages from just not having a consistent grip. My 'official' grip doesn't hit it, but in the heat of a match I guess I don't always have it right. I removed the button and took the mag release out and found that I don't have the extended glock mag catch in there, but the standard one. I bought the pistol used and the previous owner must have switched it out. So, I've ordered the factory extended one ($8 shipped) and I'll see if it's sufficient.
  20. Excellent review format! Tons of rounds down range, and feedback from someone who really knows what they are looking at. It also makes me want to try steel challenge.
  21. For the extremely limited budget, 'airsoft' belts and mag pouches are really just competition gear knock-offs made in China. Check out aliexpress.com and search "IPSC". My cr-speed knock-offs work flawlessly and are about $16 ea shipped individually, less if you buy 4 at a time. I know this is un-American and I'll probably go straight to hell for buying this stuff, but it works and I just plain can't afford the name-brand stuff. I bought my real Bladetech holster off Amazon.com for about $35. I don't shoot Singlestack but I'm following this thread because I'm thinking about getting my first 1911 as well.
  22. Great advice here- I'm glad to know I don't need to unlearn something while I'm trying to learn so many other things.
  23. When I'm shooting a hoser stage with lots of close targets, I find myself not using my sights at all. It just happens that way, it's not something I've practiced. I'm getting the hits I need, and the stages where this happen tend to be some of my best stages as far as HF. But, I'm just a high C/low B shooter and I'm wondering if I'm picking up a bad habit. Do you better shooters out there actually see you front sight on close targets, like 6 feet away, or are you looking over the pistol at the target (like I have been doing)? If you are doing this, is point shooting something you practice?
  24. Thanks for all your hard work on the MHS! It was creative and tough, and it went smooth as far as I experienced it. Great match.
  25. LOL, I didn't replace the screw. In my defense, have you ever taken apart a plastic kids toy? They have a million screws. You could remove half of them and it would still hold together. This screw came from something that doesn't work and was on the way to the trash can anyway. I predrilled the mag release with it still installed on the pistol. The first hole was too close to the middle and the screw protruded into the channel the magazine needs to travel. About 1/8" away from the side closest the trigger worked better. Of course this would be obvious to anyone installing in on a mag release that you have taken out. BTW, the wire spring that holds the release in place used to be really, really stout and made it require a lot of force to drop a mag. I pulled it out with needle nose pliers and filed on two opposing sides of the part that stuck out of the hole it goes in. This made it flex much easier along a single axis, and I put it back in so the flex was in the direction that the mag release moved. Problem solved.
