  1. buy a rangefinder, a ballistic calculator and a scope with a horus or horus like reticle and leave the math at home.
  2. most people who go hog hunting for the first time go way over gunned. It is like they think they are rhino hunting or something. I have taken a lot of hogs with an AR15 80% is bullet placement the other 10% is bullet performance. do not shoot hogs behind the shoulder like they are deer. Their vitals are not positioned the same. The best shot is ahead of the shoulder in line with the eye and ear hole. They will be DRT every time with that shot.
  3. all around 3 gun / open = Benny Hill - Triangle Shooting Sports.
  4. What is your budget? GA Precision would be my first choice and then McWhorter has a couple of 6.5x47 lapua's that would fit the bill and are 10% off right now. I disagree that 308 won't go 1200. Depending on loading, weapon and atmospherics, it is possible. I would prefer the 308 to a 6.5x284 just in barrel life and load availability. The 6.5x47 Lapua intrigues the heck out of me and will stretch much farther than 1200 yards. If on a smaller budget, Savage makes a good base to build and then it is trigger, scope and bases.
  5. I prefer the Octagonal to round for better grip and the flats for barricades. I know Mark from Carbon Arms has written some very interesting things about cutting carbon fiber and the dangers associated with it. Hopefully he will chime in here. It has given me pause about using Lancer or any other slotted Carbon Fiber I have found that you can get lighter than the Lancer. Even the Noveske keymod is lighter than the lancer. at 11.6 v. 14.5 oz
  6. Here is a link to GA Precision's barrel break in instructions. http://www.gaprecision.net/ga-precision-download.html
  7. The best thing to do is call Derek at Triangle Shooting Sports and see if they have a 26" all ready tricked out. If not, send them one and have them give it their full race package. One stop shopping at its best and it is much better than the factory competition model.
  8. start with Federal Gold Medal Match in 168 and 175 and see if that groups any better. You then at least have a consistent place to start to begin to eliminate variables.
  9. I would give Benny or Derek Hill a call at Triangle Shooting Sports...
  10. off the shelf? .223 My search would start and end with Federal Gold Medal Match and Black Hills match.
  11. Sign up for a week at the Sigarms academy. They have great range facilities, loaner guns, solid instructors, and the Seacoast of New Hampshire is a nice place to hang out after hours. It would be a great place to start. They stack their Handgun 101,102, 103 in successive days and they you could slide into the same with rifle and finish with shotgun on the weekend. Give Adam Painchaud a call. He is the director and a very good guy. He will be able to help you with the schedule etc.
  12. If you can wait, Gopro is releasing a newer unit this fall. It will mean the Hero 3+ black price will be dropping and already has a bit. It is supposed to be smaller, better processor and higher resolution. Gopro cold weather battery life has always been a problem. Hopefully this will fix it.
  13. I have replaced my laptop with an ASUS transformer. It is droid based. Droid is more open and easier to use - removable media options, shows up as a true hard drive when connected to a computer, etc but is less secure. IOS based devices - IPAD = no removable media, everything needs to go through Itunes, no micro usb port, but is more secure. I have both ASUS transformer and an IPAD issued for work. I love the ASUS, I tolerate the IPAD.
  14. you can add a bluetooth wireless mouse to an ipad as well as a keyboard. Not that I am an Ipad fan. I have one issued by my employer that is near useless to me except to check news and email. I run an asus tablet with keyboard as a desktop replacement.
  15. The Versamax is a 3.5" receiver. All of them are all built on the same receiver.
  16. I am terrible in the sun and heat. I wear similar fly fishing. It does make a difference with the sun protection.
  17. I know the answer...but have the wrong equipment... There goes my noveske love.
  18. There is a jig that the builders like Triangle, AI and TTI have that corrects this. It is why they used to bend barrels. Now they use the jig to square it up. I believe the jig is KurtM's creation.
  19. boiled them outdoors in a pot you don't care about.
  20. boil them in a pot your wife doesn't care about, outdoors. blow them off with an airgun if need be and then lightly oil. usually if you take them out while still hot you can skip the airgun.
  21. Shooting on props and barricades can also cause deflection to a non-freefloat barrel. It is amazing how little pressure can result in deflection. You can move point of impact a few inches or more just from changing where on the handguard you are resting and the amount of pressure.
  22. Bowie Tactical Concepts does a nice job for reasonable money. I do not know their current turnaround time.
  23. Check out Advanced Persormance Shooting. They do one that is a $50 add on to some of their grip mods.
