I can't get a caliper under the FF handguard to measure the barrel width. I'm pretty sure it's .650 under the handguards and lighter than your JP, but not significantly. You may save a few ounces. It's certainly cheaper than the JP - but you would have to have a smith cut and thread it which adds to the cost.
I have this Bushmaster 9 twist 20" barrel with Clark carbon fiber handguard and it's very light. I've been very happy with the Bushmaster barrel. Great performance with Rem 55's, Sierra 69's, JLK 75's and Nosler 69's...
I have that barrel cut back to 18" and threaded. Very nice set up. , but I'm thinking about selling it. I pretty much shoot either a 16" or 20".
I have an older Colt "pencil" barrel on one upper. 1/12 twist, so you're bacially limited to 55's - but that's what I mostly shoot anyway. Lightweight and swings and transitions very nicely. I considered having a smith cut it down to 18" and open up the ports - but it's so lightweight and balenced that I left it at 20".
I don't know of any manufacturer that uses a good brake that is permanently pined - but I could be wrong. Although I think Bushmaster may offer a 14.5 with a permanently attached Y brake or mini Y brake - which are decent brakes.
Not wanting to derail but do you have any experience with the Osprey or Ares kits? I have a gun with PRI SPR handguards that I do want to convert to piston.
Adams Arms told me that the JP tubes will don't have enough clearance and won't work.
The Ospery has a good rep. Take a look at the AR15.com forum on pistions.
I think there new slogan is "Glock 20+ years of development... still the same stuff"
Why does it have to look different?
But it is... http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1174232
Great pics in the linked thread. Thx!
For many people, the grip angle makes the gun point high. Many companies, including Robar, do grip reductions. However, each one of those I've handled makes the backstrap almost completely flat - making the gun point low for me.
Like many of you, I run FF rifle length hand guards on all my AR's - including my 16" uppers. I grab the handguard all the way out - toward the muzzle - pointing my left index finger toward the target.
I'm building an 11.5" SBR upper (not for 3 gun, mind you) that will have a carbine gas system and an Adams Arms piston conversion. You can't put the AA gas block under a FF tube. I hate the little handguards on carbines.
I'm considering a Daniel Defense 9.5" handguard - made to extend the handguard on a carbine (and it fits the AA conversion). Here's a pic on a 16""
If I grab the handguard as described above - with my left index finger running along side the FF tube and in front of the gas block - am I going to fry my finger with the hot gasses coming out of the gas block?
Thanks.
Alex,
Would you care to give a little more info on your assessment of the Osprey. Toying with the idea of a piston gun but I would like to run a rifle length tube on a 10.5 inch gun so the osprey is one of the few options.
SS - I have a Form 1 pending and have the same thoughts as you. The AA kit will work on a 10.5" barrel, but it looks like the Osprey kit requires an 11.5" barrel Osprey carbine kit
