  1. I probably missed it somewhere along the line, but has there been a schedule announced??? Just getting flights arranged and need to know the finish time on Sunday. THanks,
  2. Exactly how is a 4" steel target at 100 yds "dumbing down" anything? think about it for a while OK I give up, the evil 3 Gun Nation has already made me a stupid zombie. Since I am so dumb, please explain to me how a 4MOA target is "dumbing down" the sport. Option A: 4 MOA targets at 100 yards, you zero your rifle for 100 yds and only have to worry about holding high on up close targets. Everything else, you put your cross hair / dot on the center of the target. Negligible wind affects. You could use 55 gr bullet for everything. Option B: 4 MOA targets out to 400-500 yards, do you zero 100, 200, 250 or 300 yards? Some targets you hold under, some you hold over, some you aim at the center. If it's a windy day, maybe you want something heavier than 55 gr. Ability to adjust for wind comes into affect. Option A seems a lot dumber to me. That decision where to zero is a real killer, you would have to be smart enough to use a ballistic calculator and everything! I don't know how to do this but someone once told me that if you run a 200yd zero you never have to leave a 10" plate to hit it all the way to 400yds! and if you run a 300 yd zero that stretches to 450!!! all without holding anywhere other than the center of the plate!!!!!!! even more amazing huh? Like I said I'm just a dummy, but it seems like a few purty smart fellers only shoot 55gr bullets already....but then again one of them is Kurt Miller so he must be a dummy too. Bottom line you can think this is "dumbing down" all you want. I'll bet $100 to a donut that the stage design, varying stage strategy, positional difficulty and most importantly level of competition will keep this endeavor plenty "smart". The dumb move seems to be playing the critic who throws rocks from the stands at the guys playing the game.

  5. Geez Jim, two round mags? I think you might look to add a 1 in front of that. A nice 12 rounder would be very helpful. (Typo?) Chuck, Adding the current extension to the 5 round mags is a good solution but starting with a 2 rd mag and adding an extension allows for better geometry of the shells as capacity goes up making for a better solution.
  6. Keep in mind most of my critique is in comparison to utilizing an RDS/Magnifier setup vs. a comparably priced 1x variable optic. First. Price... By the time I purchase the initial RDS and the Magnifier and possibly two mounting systems the cost is well past some very nice 1-4 variable territory. Second Function...I am either saddled with having the X power in place all of the time or I am hampered by having a dangling optic on my rifle. At best it is simply in the way and worst it is getting hung up on gear, obstacles etc. and severely hampering my weapon manipulations. Third Optic quality. I have yet to see a magnifier that comes close to offering the optical quality of even mid priced 1x options. Fourth Weight. At best most RDS/Magnifier setups are at least 4-5 oz heavier than a good 1x optic. Although a couple of ounces sounds small, keep in mind it is being added at the top of the rifle which is well above it's CG making the weight more noticeable from a handling perspective. Also magnifiers were developed to give users who already purchased tens of thousands of RDS an option to put some magnification behind them rather than repurchasing tens of thousands of 1x variables to replace them. So for the rest of us looking to place a versatile optic on a single rifle 1x variables have much more to offer.
  7. Hang on to your ass boys and girls, the boss is gonna have the ability to make chips anytime he wants.....this show is going to be incredible! I can't wait.
  8. Depends on your budget. If its $2300 get the Benelli 3Gun and be done with it. Benny is doing them anyway so the mods you would do to the base M2 would be the same anyway. If you are trying to save a schekel or two...The FN is a great platform. Send the carrier and trigger group off to CRums to weld up the lifter and give you a better trigger. Dremel up the loading port and you are off to the races with every bit as competitive platform for about $1200
  9. HAHA!! If you pissed me off, you'd know it because I'd come up with something a lot better than not letting you into the match!! I've been out of town since the middle of Novemeber. I know that isn't a good excuse, but I did my very best to make sure all of the updates were on the website, including the preregistration for shooters that had shot the match the previous two years or 5 years total. Not sure what else I should have done. The entire reason for doing the registration on line was to remove any hint of favoratism. Just so everyone out there knows it, I HATE THIS MATCH! IT IS A COMPLETE MONEY LOOSER FOR MGM DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE IS SO MUCH SHOOTING, WE ARE LIMITED TO HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS WE CAN TAKE. IT IS A COMPLETE DRAIN OF MGM'S EMPLOYEES TIME. I ALWAYS SHOOT LIKE $H!T AT THE MATCH BECAUSE I'M SO FREAKIN' TIRED FROM BEING OUT THERE FOR THE PREVIOUS WEEK AND HALF SETTING UP. I'VE SPENT MY BIRTHDAY AT THE RANGE FOR THE LAST 7 YEARS. Just so you know, my fun meter is about pegged. I'd actually considered this being the last year. Maybe it will be. My birthday is in May, and we don't have any employees(so it's just JJ and I before the match), we don't have our own gun related business(just our own money to lose), but, some days...I'm so with you!!!! (Edited to add...about RM3G not MGM! Just wanted to clarify! ) Denise (and what's in these little glasses anyway???) From all the whining I'm thinking the shots are estrogen!
  10. This seems to be a major problem with new Saiga shooters. I talked to one Saiga shooter (a frequent poster here but I won't call him out) that didn't know there was a piston in the gas system. He started getting FTFs and was finally clued in by the gun's builder. It ran great after a good cleaning but hurt him at a big match. Another guy I shoot with asked me how to clean the piston without hurting the o-rings. O-rings, what o-rings? He had fired over 500 rounds out of his R&R Saiga without cleaning the gas system and had built up a solid mass of carbon on the puck that did kind of look like a pair of o-rings. For me, finding the right load and sticking with it was the trick. I always shoot 1oz AA Super Sport loads, they work every time. Operator error is the most common problem but that doesn't stop some people from badmouthing a product that is not actually defective. Doug Seriously? Someone who is in competative shooting and has that little knowledge of a gun they shoot and paid big money for???Thats pretty bad. Id hate to see what the rest of their kit looks like. Sorry to disappoint you Kent. Apparently I had better things to do than learn all about the Kalashnikov system before ever owning one. There is a learning curve, particularly with different firearms designs. I can't tell you the number of 2011 pattern guns I've seen malfunction that were due to poor maintanence. It's very, very normal. If you're an AR shooter and swap over to a Saiga, a gun that really doesn't have a decent manual anywhere and one that no one else in your club probably has yet, I'd bet even the best shooter is going to have some learning time. I'd also be willing to be that no matter how good the Akdal is, within 3 months of Jim shipping the first one, at least a couple people will be bitching that they suck. And it won't be Jim's fault it will be the nut behind the butt that didn't realize you need to clean that one little spot where the crud builds up. (I know about it but I'm not telling.) Sorry. I had no idea who it was and mean no offense. Just suprised since cleaning the gas plug is just a part of a routine cleaning every few hundred rounds. I honestly wasn't trying to diss anyone and sorry if it seemed so. Actually I was not refering to Chuck but another shooter. Both of the guys I mentioned are A class or higher shooters and know how to maintain a gun. I had to have my buddy show me how to strip my first Saiga because I was clueless. I have a clue now. Doug Actually Doug you can name names. It was me. For anyone who doesn't understand that receiving a gun a couple of weeks before a match from your sponsor with little time to get it dialed in, sometimes things get overlooked. The conversation between Jim and I went something like me..."What do I need to do to keep this running?" Jim... "Keep the gas system clean and lube it once in a while" Most of the rest of the conversation was concerning parts, mounts, mods, prototype parts etc etc all the things going on with a brand new platform and trying to get it out in view of everyone. The mistake came on my part assuming the gas system on the Saiga was EXACTLY like the AK (no puck). Initially when I had some short stroking I assumed recoil springs, changed em, ran better (little shot but lots of buck and slugs on the next stage go figure) back to square one with the shorts stroking and I finally tore into the gas system thus finding the puck chamber and cleaning it out. Problem solved. In a perfect world I probably wouldn't have been shooting a new gun without the proper shake down time but it was what it was. FWIW, as the last couple years have passed I have "taught" several people about the puck, apparently it wasn't as painfully obvious as some would have assumed. With respect to your judgement over how well I know my gear or don't know my gear....feel free to come take a peek at my "KIT" whenever you like....both mine and Jim's desire is that it will look well used
  11. Do have an accuracy system on your pellet spreader? Please update me when you get a chance to shoot it! Working four straight....but plans are to heat it up on Tuesday!
  12. I'm a little torn. I like having the variety for the shotgun. It tends to separate the pack a little especially when the "recoil sensitive" have to pull the triggers on some heavy loads. However it is going to make traveling so much easier.
  13. I wasn't picking out anyone comment in particular, just pointing out that a good number of the comments questioning the process (whether intentional or not) took away from the accomplishments of many of those who made the top 64. Not to mention took away from the amount of work Pete, Chad, et al have done to make this happen. That being said, I will take my beer in the form of a nice bourbon, and on the subject of Chuck Anderson......NOBODY likes that guy
  14. I could have worded that better. The origin of my question lies in the fact that the ranking list of last years series is gone from the website, so it's impossible to see where people were at. I didn't think about how that came across until you pointed it out. My aplogies for that. I just looked at it... its there now. http://3gunnation.com/the_series/standings/s/overall_standings/P0/'>http://3gunnation.com/the_series/standings/s/overall_standings/P0/ There are at least a few on that "shooters list" that were well outside the top 100, so I doubt that list is really official. It keeps telling me that the website is unreachable Working fine right now. http://3gunnation.com/the_series/standings/s/overall_standings Have any of the people making the baseless accusations of impropriety considered how much you are insulting all the shooters who busted their ass and made list
  15. Jeez....get over yourself. Tromix made the first custom AKDAL posts/parts on this board in May of 2011 and have been working on a slew of parts ever since. Just like Firebird. Tony Rumore Tromix OK, I'll play. I would like to order a complete fire control group, a grip adapter, a side charging forend, a bolt handle, and 8 10 round magazines. Please pm me for my CC # and address. You have these parts right????? But just to be clear, the facts speak for themselves. Firebird is the first to be shipping completed guns and has by far the most extensive parts list.
  16. Show me where I can get a race ready AKDAL and mags right now? When I check Firebirds website it says "in the works". Others in this thread have spoken of mag issues. This gun looks promising but its too soon to say that its a Saiga killer in my opinion. As for taking offense at the Alaska comment, I appologize for that, it was late and I read into your post something you did not say. Pat Firebird's the place. Jim developed all of the parts last year and after many hard learned lessons about "sharing" with others, he is in the enviable position of having production parts being installed in builds as we speak. Everyone else gets to play catch up this time. "Right now" is relative as I can't think of a single custom gun that anyone can get "right now". In this game lead times are a reality. Call Jim and put in an order. Rather than updating the sight he has been busting his ass making parts and building guns. The guns are shipping to those who put orders in prior to the first of the year.
  17. Please point to all the funny parts that aren't here already As for the offense you seem to have taken over the local availability of product, my point wasn't that you are still loading cap and ball. It was merely that the fact a particular product is not found in your local gunmart has absolutely zero correlation to its viability as a 3gun product. FWIW, I haven't seen a glut CR speed belts, Double Alpha mag pouches, Meopta ZD's, JP CTR02's etc at my local Cabela's, but we all know they are pretty good products for the sport.
  18. Not moving to AKDAL until there are high cap mags and it proves itself. My R&R Saiga is doing good for me. I have not seen people moving away from the Saiga at all. It seems a few people are experimenting with the AKDAL right now but there has not been a mass exidoous from the Saiga like you speak of. I am not slaming the AKDAL its good to see more options out there. But its way too soon to call it a Saiga Killer. I have not even seen one for sale up here. Pat First there was never mass acceptance of the Saiga. Therefor there can be no mass exodus. As to the popularity of the Akdal Firebird is already entertaining more orders than the earlier saiga models. So while there were plenty of people who stayed away from the Saiga either because of it's reputation for horrible stock build quality or the expense involved in making one run, there are plenty moving into 1919's. It already is a Saiga Killer. The development and tuning of the AKDAL has only taken a year compared to the 5-6 years spent trying to make the Saiga into what it was. The AKDAL enjoys manufacturer/factory support far and above the SAIGA. There will be barrels, bolts, operating arms, replacement parts etc to support the 1919 which have never been nor will ever be available for the Saiga. The far superior build quality of the 1919 allows for repeatable machine operations facilitating modification of the gun. This was never possible with the Saiga due to huge dimesnional variances seen from gun to gun. The dimensional tolerances in the 1919 alone far surpass the Saiga which allows for large scale manufacturing of aftermarket parts unlike for the Saiga which were a crapshoot at best. All these things before we even get into optimizing the 1919 for our game. As to one not being available in Alaska????? I'm sure there are quite a few specialty items that are not widely available, but I don't know how that translates into the product not being significantly better than the Saiga.
  19. It will stop it's forward motion, but send the splatter back at the shooter or anyone near by. I'd want 100% the bullet captured, if it were me. He is not talking about making his garage a shooting range. Just one guys opinion, but proper dry firing assumes you have removed any chance of a mishap before starting the endeavor (no live ammo in the area, empty gun, etc etc). To think that after doing so you will then be able to predict and confine the unexpected "ND" to only the small area behind the target is a little shortsighted. A piece of steel may provide a warm fuzzy blanket but any unforseen incident has just as much chance, if not more, of being not directed at the target area.
  20. Take notice of the weapons used. They are always drawn accurately and there is often obscure weapon references. An early episode even had a Walther 2000 in it.
  21. Do you mean to blend where the extension attaches or where the shells first enter the tube? Thanks, Allen Where they first enter the tube. Smoothing the transition there will not only make loading them easier, but it will eliminate deforming the crimp on shells as they are loaded which has the potential to cause malfunctions later on.
  22. Bar none MGM..... 1) The quality of their targets are second to none. 2) MGM's customer service and support after the sale is incredible. 3) Noone....noone supports the sport more than MGM. Not only with match and target support but with the MGM Junior Camp as well. 4) And they're OK folks to boot Their prices may be a little higher, but IMO the value is far superior to other target systems.
  23. I'm at 8gr of Silhouette and 1.18 OAL. I don't believe it is compressed. If so, just barely kissing the powder surface. FWIW one of the reasons I switched to Silhouette was the volume as it allowed me to load at a normal rate rather than artificially slow to reduce powder spillage.
  24. If you decide to port the barrel you need to port it at least 5" inches back from the muzzle so you have enough pressure to make it effective. Blend the inside of the magtube opening to make for a smooth transition as the shells are pushed into the tube.
  25. If you are not sold on having 6x (IMO it is not necessary) take a hard look at the Meopta ZD. $900. All of the things you need in a good 3 Gun scope and nothing you don't. Excellent glass, daylight visible illumination (under all conditions), clean easy to use reticle that is well suited to 3 gun, and a pricepoint that is more than competitive.
