  3. For the reloading process, in addition to your 550 and your dies you will need: Small primer pick up tubes 223 Case guage - the dillon one is ok, though I would recommend the JP case guage. It has tighter tolerances, making your loads less likely to jam. Case lube - I use the Dillon lube on the cases, but there are many options for this Small rifle primers Brass - Brass prep is much more involved with rifle than pistol. There are many threads covering this topic. Bullets - Many opinions on what is the best bullet. For 3 Gun you have several options. 1) Use a 55 g FMJ for the shorter ranges and then something like a 69 g SMK for the longer ranges 2) Use a better bullet for everything (ie a 53 or 55 grain VMax) There are many threads covering this topic as well Powder - the 223 is very forgiving and there are many options for powder. I like the Ramshot Exterminator. Always good to have a chronograph to check your loads If you have the DVD that came with your Dillon 550, I would highly recommend watching it. They also have these vidoes on You Tube Steve
  4. I have both the 4x4 AP's and the 4 round Man Mountain and I prefer the 4 round Man Mountain. I just can't seem to get the bottom 4 shells out of the AP's as well as I can the front 4 on the AP or the 4 on the Man Mountain. However, the 4x4's take up less belt space and if you are on a high round count shotgun stage, it can be tough to pack enough rounds in the 4 Round MM's to make it through the stage. Depends on how much real estate you have on your belt. That being said I believe this is totally personal preferance. If you look at the pro shooters there are guys like Keith Garcia that use the 4x4's, and he is one of, if not the, fastest shotgun reloaders around. Then there are other pro's that use the 4 round carriers or the load 2 system. If possible try both and see what works best for you.
  5. Before choosing you may want to shoot a couple matches and try and make that decision based on your own desires/goals. That being said I think you could make an argument for either the shotgun or the pistol. Unless you decide you want to shoot Heavy Metal, you will probably want to go with a 9mm pistol. Something like a Glock 34 or similar. The lower recoil and higher magazine capacity will be a big advantage over a 45. I'm not familiar with that shotgun but unless you have or can find a tube extension for your shotgun, you will also want to consider getting a shotgun with a tube extension. There are many threads on mods for the shotgun, that you will want to read as well. Welcome to this fun, exciting and addictive sport!
  6. Larue mounts work don't worry. Pat +1 I have changed scopes multiple times on my AR without having to adjust zero. Highly recommend the Larue Mount
  7. I registered for the match, but I didn't see where to pay. Did I miss that info?
  8. I've been very happy with this Tactical Case from Cabelas. I've had it about a year, Zippers and pockets are holding up very well. And it's on sale right now for $50 Steve

  12. I am just getting into the rifle world, so this isn't meant to start an argument - I promise. I really don't know. With pistols, the heavier bullets produce a lighter, albeit slower and more sluggish, recoil. The major reason is that the speed of the round isn't consistent, but the power factor is. The heavier bullets are slower than the light ones. Would it be true that the recoil, for rifle, would be more with a heavier bullet - even with a consistent power factor? My guess would be that it would be more subjective and based upon the particular barrel, gas system, comp etc. This would be due to the fact that we typically tailor our rifle loads to the most accurate load, not necessarily the best feeling, like (as least I) do with pistol. I may pick a load for a particular bullet at the high end of the powder range since it drops from 1" at 100 to .300" at 100 with that particular load. My other guess would be that the recoil across the entire range of common 223 projectiles would be so close that it really wouldn't make enough difference for me to pick one over another. With a properly tuned gas block of course. Good question, and I'm not sure I know the answer, though I did some quick calculations to calculate Energy for the loads that I have data for. I believe this may be the reason. Used the JBM Calculators MV in ft/sec Energy in foot/lbs Pistol MV taken at 10 feet, Rifle at 15 feet Energy for both at 10 yds Data from a Glock 34 Factory AE 115 g loads MV - 2950, Energy = 363.5 Hand loads 124 MG FMJ 4 g N320 powder - MV - 1060, Energy = 301 Rifle: 18 in JP SCR11 55g VMax, MV - 2950, Energy - 1052 69g SMK, MV - 2770, Energy - 1165 I believe this is the reason why there is more perceived recoil from the heavier rifle bullets, but not necessarily with the pistol. Steve
  13. One thing to keep in mind about shooting heavier bullets for everything is that in general your felt recoil is going to be higher with the heavier bullets, possibly slowing down follow up shots.
  14. Wasn't sure where to post this question. I have a friend that has a FN Five-Seven pistol. Looks like the Muzzle Velocity is ~ 2100 fps. Is it safe to shoot steel at normal pistol distances with that pistol? I have MGM KO plates (500 Brinell steel).
  15. This has been discussed/debated several times in the past - see this thread for example. As a minimum, it would be a good idea to make sure your rifle is clean and clear of any debris, etc in the barrel. Otherwise, shoot it and have fun!! Steve
  16. I've been using a LaRue LT104 on my SCR-11 with never a problem. I first had it with a Meopta and now with a Swaro. Steve
  17. Hi Austin, If I remember correctly you were on our squad at the Ruby Mt. Match. Still wishing for another bowl of the chile they served after the match! While I certainly don't feel that I'm an expert at long range, I've been able to improve my long range skills with a combination of a MGM mini popper and a MGM Flash Target. Both of those targets were on sale earlier this year. Before buying the Flash Target I was using a cardboard target with 4 8 Inch circles taped to it. I set up the Mini Popper and one of those 4 in Do-All plastic balls at 100 yds and the Flash Target/Paper Targets at 300 yds. I will set up a "course" to shoot all the targets from different positions. For example - Standing using the side/back of my jeep for a rest - Then kneeling using a plastic saw horse/sage brush etc. Shoot from one knee, both knees or just leaning on the rest. You never know what position you will need to be in at a match - Prone Practice transitioning between the targets in different orders and different positions. Shoot from awkward or uncomfortable positions as well. I probably should, but haven't been keeping track of my times. If you don't have re-settable targets I've attached a copy of my 8 in circle target, that can mimic the steel we have to shoot. Regards, Steve Rifle8inCircle.pdf
  18. Come join us for 5 stages of Multigun fun at our Monthly 3-Gun match in Reno. Hosted by the Western Nevada Pistol League. Make a weekend out of it and shoot the USPSA Pistol match on Sunday. Stages and range location are posted on the WNPL Site at www.wnpl.org Steve
  19. I liked the Score Sheets they used at NWMG so much that I made up similar sheets to replace the ones we were using at our club. 2 Versions attached. Steve ScoreSheet-HVT.pdf ScoreSheet.pdf
  20. Your throw lever is nice. I gave my stock one that came with the scope to 9x23guy. Pat + 1 on the 3 Gun Stuff Throw Lever. Fits the scope perfectly, looks like a well built product. I just replaced my Meopta with the new Swaro. I loved my Meopta, but the Swaro is definitely a step up. Better optical quality, the 6X is nice and possibly my favorite feature is the smaller central dot over the Meopta. As has been said many times, the Swaro may not improve my scores much, if at all, but it is sure is fun having the coolest toy(s)! Steve
  21. I don't think there are any tricks other than a buttload of practice. During your practice sessions try getting your heart rate up before each shot. Run, do jumping jacks, use a timer, do whatever you can before taking a shot to simulate a match. Don't always practice prone, shoot from one knee, two knees, standing while leaning on a rest etc. Learn to shoot from uncomfortable positions. You can do all of the above with dry or live fire. Practice your trigger control so you are breaking your shot as your cross hairs/dot are coming onto the target. Steve
  22. Doug and NWMG RO's and support Staff, I just got home from shooting with the RO's. Just wanted to say thank you for all of your hard work putting on a great match. While our squad (Squad 16) had some challenges getting the kinks out of a couple stages the first day, we were able to knock out the other 7 stages with time to spare. Great staff, great stages, fun all around!! Thanks again, Steve
  23. One other possible cause of your jams is that your loads may be too light to make the bolt carrier operate properly. According to Sierra Data for an AR the mininum powder weight for H335 is 23.6 g. It may be worth slowly increased the powder weight, watching for pressure signs of course. Steve
  24. It's possible I made a mistake when I wrote that down, my notes are from about 6 months ago. I do remember trying to get them as long as I could while keeping the crimp in the cannelure. FWIW, I just measured some American Eagle 55 FMJ factory rounds and they are at ~ 2.20. I've grown fond of the VMax bullets, so I don't load the FMJ's any more. Let us know your results, or even better yet since you only live a few hours away from Reno come up and join us at our monthly 3-Gun matches! Next match is July 7th - Calendar at www.wnpl.org Steve
