  1. For most of the major outlaw 3 gun matches there are no restrictions on barrel length for any division. The old SOF match did have a few restrictions, but largely they are a thing of the past. A 22 inch barrel will be fine and will not put you at a disadvantage. A magazine tube that holds 10 or more will be an advantage on most courses of fire. The limitation of 8 or 9 only in the gun before the buzzer applies to just that. At most matches you can load to your liking after the buzzer sounds. Depending on the course of fire this can help you avoid additional reloads as you go along. I haven't seen a limitation for how long your tube can stick past your barrel. I'm sure that there are some out there, but I see a lot of tubes that extend well past the muzzle. True HM has always been a big bore pistol (differing capacity rules), a pump 12 GA, and an iron sighted 308 Winchester or bigger rifle fed by 20 rd mags. There are variations of rules and one of them is heavy optics aka tactical heavy. It follows the same rules as tac optics but requires that your rifle be 308 win or larger and use 20 rd mags. Semi auto 12 GA and and any tac pistol allowed. Check out 3gunnation.com and look at division rules. Many matches were running these already and 3gun nation followed suit. As for the JM 930 I cannot help. I know a lot of shooters have jumped on the bandwagon because of the value, but they still take some tweaking to bring out their potential. There is a twenty page plus thread that should give you a lot of answers. I'm a Benelli M2 man myself, but the Remington Versamax is gathering a big group of followers. You can get the Versamax Tactical now and it comes with a 22 in barrel.
  2. Fun! Fun! Fun! The He-Man National Championship was hands down the most enjoyable match that I have participated in. Hats off to JJ and Denise for putting it together and thanks to the RO's who volunteered their time. I was a little disappointed when I arrived and found that the competitor turnout was a little on the light side, but the shooters that were there are the most dedicated and friendly bunch that I have ever had the pleasure to shoot with. It must be the he-man division appeal that brought us together. The sound of 350 yd steel being smacked by a .308 all day long was great. A special thanks to all of the sponsors that stepped forward and provided to a new match. Your support was amazing. Thank you Ken and Jarmo for your sponsorship. I am working a few things out with the Jr Wee-Man shooter Linda Hughes' sponsor (dad) so she can continue her competition career with a Nordic Components AR. For those that did not attend, clear your calendars and let JJ and Denise know that you want to participate in 2013! Edited because my fingers are too crooked to hit the right keys on this "smart" phone. Kuan
  3. I'm driving 12 hrs for this and I'm relying on everyone saying how great it is to keep me going. I would think 3 days out they would have something up about what to expect.... Hopefully they have the stages designed by Friday morning..... Here is my plan: 1) Drive 11 hours 2) Load mags 3) Think about sleep, but I will be too excited 4) Show up at range 5) Nodd head when asked "Shooter ready?" 6) Listen for beep 7) Lose my mind when the beep is heard and try to hit something. Seriously, I am driving 700+ miles to shoot in match that I have never been to and I can't think of anything more enjoyable to be doing this weekend (even if we have to shoot in the rain ). I'm really looking forward to the match, I just wish there were more of us shooting HM. Kuan
  4. If you are an absolute die hard M4 shooter then you only need 3 mods to run one. 1. After you have your one piece magazine tube installed, find a +2 that will extend your tube capacity to 9. Cut the spring about 10-12 inches past the tube. 2. Soften the shell latch a little so you can push the shells in with a little less effort. 3. Put on the field stock. That is all you really need. If you want an bigger bolt handle then go for it. The lifter is good to go with no mods. It doesn't have the same guidance cut as an M2 so it won't tear your thumbnail off. You will be hindered by the ghost ring sights, but with no other barrel options you will be stuck with them. My buddy has been running one for the past 3 years, but he has finally conceeded that there are too many drawbacks (sighting and weight) and will be shooting my M2. Go out and have fun with it. Added - If you want a colorful release button, Briley has some for you.
  5. May need to clear my cookies on my phone. Hmmm. I see there are 4 HMO and 5 HM. If I shoot HMO that makes ten total. I wonder if there is a possibility of combining the divisions for 3GN Division series points? Make us all HM Irons.......the original Heavy Metal Calling JJ for support.... That's fine too but do I have to ditch my scope and shoot looking down the rail? I figured the HI guys were good enough to out shoot the scopes anyways. Well I wouldn't go that far. Maybe you could shoot lefty and give the rest of us a chance to catch up to you. I enjoy shooting iron sights more than an optic, but sometimes modern technology is hard to overcome.

  7. Download the M&P and you will be fine. I used to download my Para P14 before actually having a single stack. I still use the Para when rules allow 10 rds such as USPSA Heavy Metal Optics. Craig Thanks for the reply. M&P it is. Edited - Good thing that I shoot better than I type.
  8. I don't have a cart question, but I do have a handgun question. My M&P 45 has become my go to gun for Heavy Metal. The match rules state single stack rules with no more than 8 rds in a magazine. Penalties will apply if you load more than 8. This makes me think that it is not strict single stack rules (USPSA). Will my M&P be legal if downloaded to 8 rds or do I have to pull out my old Colt 1911? Has anyone shot the match with a downloaded hi-cap gun? Thanks in advance, Kuan
  9. I have some data that will put your 300 out to 1600 + if you want it. A 208 AMAX will do it for a lot cheaper than a .338. About $1.20 a shot if you have brass to start with. You may ask a mod to move this to precision rifle where you will get more answers.
  10. Lose the ghost ring rear. The vent rib with bead only (fiber optic is better) is much faster for this game.
  11. Match fee is 285.00 Classes are: Open, Tactical Optics, Tactical Irons, Heavy Tactical and Heavy Metal. 10 people are required to recognize a Class Stage 9 with Heavy Metal . Who's with me so we can make sure and have the 10 needed for the class?
  12. I have been toying around with some at a couple of local matches. I keep them mounted on the end of my rail and have them set at a radius comparable to a pistol. They are pretty good from 10-30 yards when transitioning from your scope. I no longer have to dial from 4x to 1x to engage close paper. This includes engaging mini IPSC's also.
  13. Try it with your original trigger group first. The only internal variable that you introduced was the trigger, so try and eliminate that possiblility. If it runs with your original trigger, then you have your answer.
  14. I saw these at the SHOT show and I was intrigued. The only hesitation that I have is that the tube is less than 3/8" of an inch from the barrel for most of it. It seems like it could get uncomfortably hot during an extended firing session. Some stages that I have fired during the summer here in Texas have been warm enough with my Troy Battlerail.
  15. Eye relief is 3 inches per the Leupold website. I find that you can move about 1/4" either way without getting too much shadow going. If you are 5" back you are playing chase the center with the reticle. You can get away with it up close, but not when you are trying to stretch the legs on your rifle.
  16. The Pris will not co witness like an Aimpoint or other RDS. The glass is ground and eye relief and scope shadow matters like a magnifying optic. It isn't a huge problem and a good cheek weld will help tremendously. Its just as fast as any RDS for me and the DCD reticle is the way to go. The stock mount is good and it comes with multiple spacers so you can set it up the right height for you.
  17. I have competed in 2 of the competitions and ran straight duty gear. Glock 17 in a 6280 SLS holster on a nylon duty rig with covered pistol mag pouches and Fastmag rifle mag carrier. I carried the belt with baton, taser, cuffs, etc. The only non-standard gear that I used were the loaner shotshell caddies that the NRA loaned out to the competitors on the 26 round shotgun stage from one match. The second match differed only in the manner of shell carry. Competitors had to use the supplied "go" bag to carry their shells in. Due to the course design (lots and lots of rules about shooting areas), it doesn't really slow you down much to run your duty gear. They emphasize accuracy from specific shooting areas, so don't worry about being super fast. Have fun and see how good you are in your duty gear and go from there.
  18. + 1. What they said. I paid attention to what James and Kelly did and went with the Prismatic too. I have used Aimpoints and Eotechs for a number of years on working guns, but the Pris is the way to go because of the clarity of the etched reticle. I know that the Pris was a definite asset and it carried me to the Tac Iron win at Fallen Brethren last year. It didn't hurt that Kelly was shooting Tac Optics and that Kurt and James were absent
  19. That seems to be the way it went. The ticket was only for the prize drawings. We boarded one of the buses and there was no ticket check and then watched the event after turning in the stub for the drawing. It was a public range and there were no provisions for making the are restricted.
  20. It depends on how your rifle shoots it. My gun will shoot the 75 gr. into 3/4 moa consistently. I run Federal XM193 in the same gun and it will group about 2 1/2 moa. I can get away with having a less than dead center hold and get a hit on a 10" plate at 300 yds. when I know that my ammo will hold a group around 3 inches. With the XM193 I will be lucky to get a hit unless I am holding dead center. Having ammo that will hit where the sights are makes it easier. It gives you a greater cushion. The bigger the cushion = shorter stage times.
  21. Black Hills is great ammo, but the cost increase is seldom worth it for 3 gun. Black Hills 75 and 77 gr. match ammo will run anywhere from $33.00 to $43.00 per 50. Steel Match 75 is around $21.00 per 50. With the average rifle round count for a major match being around 150 to 200, Black Hills Match ammo will drive up a competitors cost 50-100%. The slim (very slim) advantage in accuracy is also nullfied since you are shooting from field positions and not from a bench. Most big matches are lost brass anyway. If we all shot Steel Match we could brass with only a big magnet
  22. VTAC over the MS3. The VTAC is easier to adjust when properly configured. The MS3 is more awkward to adjust quickly because the entire length of the sling must slide over your body. If you absolutely can't stand to have a free running end, then go with a VCAS by Blue Force Gear. The VTAC is still superior for 3-gunning with the limited amount that slings are used.
