  1. As long as it's (a) not a loaded handgun, and ( you mention the trigger lock or locked case when the gun was stolen, you'd survive this in MA. Mention the gun was not locked up and you're now the defendant rather than victim. A friend had an Ed Brown 45 stolen from his condo. Amazingly enough, he got it back along with the grand jury minutes of indictment of the person caught carrying it in NYC as well as the miscreant's death certificate (shot 8 times with a 45 while out on bail for the gun charge).
  2. If you move, change you phone number, etc. - even years later, make sure it gets into the original case file. When a stolen gun is recovered and traced via NCIC, the point of contact is the reporting agency - not the victim. One of our local shooters recovered his Ed Brown 45 taken in a residential breakin about two years later.
  3. Melonite is process of surface finishing that results in a very hard, corrosion resistant, nitrogen enriched surface to the steel. Glock's flavor goes under the trade name "Tennifer". As to it's utility - just ask when you've seen a rusted or scratched Glock slide.
  4. Both work great, but Federal is a bit softer. Federal uses Basic Led Styphnate rather than Lead Styphnate as the priming compound (there is a slight chemical difference between the two). It's interesting that you are finding it harder to get Winchester than Federal - it's usually the other way around.
  5. Chris was indeed at the AFS class, so you definitely met him. He has also recently completed arrangements to schedule the 2009 AFS winter series of matches (Jan/Feb/Mar) at that range and I know he was looking forward to running them. Yes, those matches will still happen.
  6. I received word that Chris Tinkonoff died earlier today. This was completely unexpected (Chris was in his mid 30's). Chris ran the matches at the American Firearms School in N. Attleboro, MA, and was a regular at most of the clubs in the Northeast Section. He is survived by his wife Carine and his dog Otis. Chris was a good man and a good friend. I will miss him.
  7. Same here in MA - the local shop sold out of AR lowers on Wednesday, and I expect the supply being overnighted that would normally last them a couple of months won't last the weekend. The owner tells me it's almost like 1994 all over again.
  8. Interestingly enough, there is a single owner for that Class A block. You have to be careful about blocking it though, since the barristers could have difficulty reaching you if some Nigerian general requires your assistance in moving some money out of the country. ------------------------------------------------------------------ OrgName: African Network Information Center OrgID: AFRINIC Address: 03B3 - 3rd Floor - Ebene Cyber Tower Address: Cyber City Address: Ebene Address: Mauritius City: Ebene StateProv: PostalCode: 0001 Country: MU ReferralServer: whois://whois.afrinic.net NetRange: 196.0.0.0 - 196.255.255.255 CIDR: 196.0.0.0/8 NetName: NET196 NetHandle: NET-196-0-0-0-0 Parent: NetType: Allocated to AfriNIC NameServer: NS1.AFRINIC.NET NameServer: NS-SEC.RIPE.NET NameServer: NS.LACNIC.NET NameServer: TINNIE.ARIN.NET NameServer: SEC1.APNIC.NET NameServer: SEC3.APNIC.NET Comment: RegDate: 1993-05-01 Updated: 2006-04-27 OrgAbuseHandle: GENER11-ARIN OrgAbuseName: Generic POC OrgAbusePhone: +230 4666616 OrgAbuseEmail: abusepoc@afrinic.net OrgTechHandle: GENER11-ARIN OrgTechName: Generic POC OrgTechPhone: +230 4666616 OrgTechEmail: abusepoc@afrinic.net # ARIN WHOIS database, last updated 2008-11-05 19:10 # Enter ? for additional hints on searching ARIN's WHOIS database.
  9. 1148 is you Steel Challenge member number, so that is valid data. The system creates RO exams for persons whose certification expired within the past 180 days, which is why a new exam was not created. Contact Kim at USPSA HQ with any questions.
  10. I'll check the code to see how far back I looked for expirations (that probably accounts for it), however, I'm still puzzled by that 1148 number.
  11. If that's the number associated with my name then there's bigger problems - My number is 16801. -Chet The system has two numbers for you in the on-line database: "1148" and "TY16801". I assumed "1148" was a L number without the L. In any case, a number like that should not exist. I will track down the problem and get it resolved.
  12. It should, however, your member number in the on-line database appears to be 1148 rather than L1148. I'll check tonight and figure out if this is a problem with Sedro's DB or the upload process. It should be resolved in a day or two.
  13. The kid across the street did this and trashed his father's pickup on a pole in the mall parking garage. He compounded the matter by telling the responding officer (New car with free one year Onstar - airbag deployment initiated an call to the local PD) he was texting and was cited for reckless driving. Three lessons: OnStar is not always your friend, and it can cause police involvement in no-injury collisions that require a paper report be filed from a position of comfort and detached reflection, but does not require an on-site police report. It is doubtful a paper report would have resulted in a citation. If you volunteer the fact that you were driving like an idiot when talking to police, expect to pay the price. He increased the chances of being cited increased astronomically by volunteering that he was texting and, even if he was destined to be cited - he undermined his own defense with his spontaneous confession of reckless driving. Don't forget that the entire Miranda business does not apply to civil infractions.
  14. Sticky prices are a different concept - once all vendors in an industry raise prices, the new price structures remain even if the cost basis driving the increase lowers and all high priced inventory has made it through the system. Prices go down only if one of the vendors decides to undercut the others to gain market share. People understand that when it's time to sell their house "what they paid for it" is irrelevant, and the only issue is "how much will a capable buyer be willing to pay". For some reason, those same people expect vendors selling to them to operate by a different set of rules. In terms of economic theory, it's not overpriced if you are willing to pay it.
  15. Read up on the economic concept of "sticky prices".
  16. If you really need it overnight, post your general location and ask if some member would loan you some until you restock your inventory. Forum members are a helpful bunch, and I wouldn't be surprised if this gets you back into operation.
  17. You probably need to find some vendor within a day's trucking distance - power is hazmat and can't go by air.
  18. From now on, whenever I return something, I'm tucking a note into the instruction manual where the vendor will not find it upon cursory examination.
  19. I hate it when home improvement stores put returned items that are no longer new, and missing parts, on the shelf after they are returned to sell as new. It's happened to me on each of my last two home projects. This is the note that is going in with the one that's one it's way back: __________ CUSTOMER: This was returned to ________ because it was obviously pre-installed and missing parts. If you got this unit, it means that ________ didn’t pay any attention to this when I pointed it out at the time of return and is trying to sell it a third time. You may want to show them this note and tell them how you got it when you return this item. October 16, 2008
  20. "The UPS Store" is not an "actual UPS location" for the purpose of shipping ORM-D, firearms, or other items that the actual UPS depot will handle.
  21. The link worked for me: http://www.bridleandbit.net/ebooks/bluepre..._files/main.swf
  22. My wife has been telling me we should move to Florida in once it's time to retire and the kid is out of school. I have no interest in moving to Florida. My wife has a tremendous fear of snakes. I forwarded her the link. Problem solved
  23. There is no ATF regulation on this like there is on receiving a gun. Once the sending FFL receives the gun from the seller, it goes into his bound book (or database if there is an ATF variance in effect) and remains there until is is shipped out of the shop. As long as it's in the dealer's books, the ATF doesn't care about an arrangement he has made a third party to have it shipped to another FFL. Just be sure to get a tracking number when the gun is shipped - it will save you the "is it in yet" phone calls.
