  1. I have had 4 open guns and had a real problem with bumping my mag release. I have tried every mag release button and custom buttons and still had a problem. A friend of mine finally said to ditch the button and try that. I did and have never had a problem since then.
  2. Aw heck. I just got DQ at my first nationals on the second day and was doing great in my division until that happened. I broke the 180 and had already stopped myself, unloaded and cleared when I heard the RO tell me to show clear. Afterwards I had other shooters tell me that I should not have stopped until I heard the RO because other people had done it and kept shooting. I( always wondered if I would know it when I broke the 180 and brother did I. The staff personnel were great and I told them it was my bad and I was good with it. I did learn a lot from what I shot and had a great time. My wife was in a state of shock though, lol. She said that as careful as I am about safety she was very surprised. But hey, hopefully that won't happen again but I was pushing that envelope to win and sometimes thats what it takes.
  3. I buy packs of 2-3 shower caps at dollar stores, depends on the store. They work great. Keep a pair of Danner ft lewis boots in my truck for rain or snow-work awesome. Rain suit from walmart that I've used several times and works great. Keep trash bags on hand. Hand warmers help also, keep them in my blizzard bag
  4. My son has a set on his carry glock and loves them. He doesn't shoot a lot but feels these are great for fast target acquisition. I haven't shot it yet but I did dryfire and they appear to be fairly efficient by appearances
  5. Ive got two square deal Bs, one is set up for 9mm and the other basically only deprimes and resizes my 38 super comp. I set that one up for my grandson so that he helps me when Im loading 38sc on my 650. I still can't say enough about the sdb as it is a great press. The biggest drawback with the sdb is you can not load rifle on it, but other then that it is fantastic for the money.
  6. tite group is awesome. clean burning and smooth as butter. Plus the fact even when powder was hard to find I never had problems finding titegroup. There is tons of info on the net when it comes to tite group
  7. I shot a friends XD a couple of weeks ago> It had an incredible trigger job on it. I told him it was comparable to my svi, it was that good. 40 caliber. He loads down or up, depending on what type of match he is shooting. I can't remember the name of the trigger but it was very impressive.
  8. Just bought a racemaster, tried it at the range, works great. But... I still like my cr speed, fits my gun perfect, no movement. I haven't decided which is the backup yet.
  9. I never wear prescription glasses when shooting but I had a real problem focusing when shooting indoors. I brought this up to my wife and she told me since I have bad stigmatism I should try my script glasses when low light. I did and it solved my problem
  10. I am former military, former law enforcement, and started shooting IPSC and steel a few years back. Prior to IPSC I had no idea about the civilian competition side of the house. My first IPSC match blew me away. I was stunned at how much more efficient civilians were then police or military. I think all police and military should shoot IPSC, it definately is the best training in the world. Although we can't replicate a firefight we can induce elements to raise the stress factor. I take quite a few military out to the ranch and it never ceases to amaze me how much they learn and carry back with them.
  11. I use just about anything I can get at this point. I use srp and spp. A very knowledgable reloading friend told me that the srp add about 25 fps on the loads to bump up the power factor.
  12. I hit a real low, felt like nothing was helping me get better. Then I met a grandmaster and started shooting with him. He helped me so much, so quickly, it was amazing. This guy is driven and it sort of rubs off on you, he loves to shoot and I mean a lot. I quess that is why he is a grandmaster.
  13. My brother has an open gun very similar to yours that he picked up about 4 years ago in a pawn shop. He doesn't shoot in competition but loves to plink at the range. He shot numerous powders and loads and finally settled on sr 7625, with montana gold 124 gr. He said that powder seemed to run the gun at its peak operating efficiency.
  14. The students will have more respect and you will have their attention if you are able to show them that you can walk the walk. I have seen instructors that won't demonstrate a technique because they lack the skills. Very counter productive.
  15. I saw this on ebay for about 12.00 from the Hit Factor shooting supply, Missouri. I ordered and got it in the mail today, about 4 days after ordering it. It came in a standard size envelope, couldn't even tell there was anything in the envelope. Opened it up and put on my press in about 30 seconds. Now the ad states "this kit eliminates the snap when the shellplate advances to the next position. When the shellplate snaps, gunpowder splashes out of the casing causing a mess on your press and inconsistent loads." Guess what? I just loaded 200 rounds and this thing works. It does run smoother and the powder spillage is gone. Just thought I would share this with you guys since you have helped me with questions in the past.
  16. I started shooting open about 6 months ago or so and am at c class. I thought I was doing good at about 300 rounds a week practice with one or two matches a month at the most. But I also had no routine and felt like I was going through the same old thing every week with no progress. All that changed about a month ago when I started shooting with a grandmaster. All of a sudden I am shooting about 1500 rounds a week with5-7 matches a month and feel like I am starting all over. The progress I have made in such a short time is unbelievable. He corrected things I had been doing wrong, not only showing me what to do but why to do it a certain way. He also established numerous drills for me to do to help me with things like target transition, reloading, shooting on the move and tons of other procedures. I wish I had hooked up with him long before now but live and learn. I also went from 50 dryfire a week to about 3 sessions a week until physical failure.
  17. If you ever get a chance to watch glenn higdon pay attention to how he moves from target to target. You very seldom see him ever stop. He will tell you it is a continous movement-always-when shooting. He is a tight package when transitioning from one target to another, his times are incredible when moving.
  18. I have a set of pro ears I picked up 5 years ago and they still work great. I also have a new pair of pro ears gold that I recently picked up that are incredible. There is a new product on the market manufactured by champion for 40.00 that my brother said work great, a lot better then peltors.
  19. I use non-chlorinated brake cleaner from wally world and mobil 1, been using it for 4 years with no problems. I picked up a dewey bottle at sportsmans warehouse for the mobil 1, nice little drip bottles.
  20. i havea BW sig and used it in two matches and ran great. I used it as a carry gun for about 6 months but went back to my compact 1911. I just like the trigger on my 1911 better, even after a trigger job was done on my sig. If you ever get a chance to meet roger sherman check his sigs out. He does all his own work and his trigger jobs are the bomb. He will be using it at nationals coming up.
  21. mobil 1 syn for 3 years and it works great. Recently used something called super lube from Ace hardware and this stuff rocks. They print their facts and figures which a lot of companies won't do and this stuff is way up there.
  22. I have been using mobil 1 for 3 years now with no problems concerning lubrication, corrosion, etc. A fellow shooter told me about super lube at ace hardware, really cheap and really works. This stuff is incredible. He is an engineer and explained to me how a lot of lubes don't even print their specs so you have idea what your getting. But this super lube is off the charts on specs, just great stuff.
  23. I bought a p18-9 last year and had problems with it right out of the box. It wouldn't extract half the time and the rest of the time it did not feed properly. I called para and they had me send it to a place in Kentucky I believe. I spent 90.00 to ship it thru ups, next day air. Para sent it back to me with a statement that they had fixed the problem and test fired 50 rounds through it. I took it to the range, with several of my shooting buddies who knew of the problem and the gun failed to feed right off the bat-again. I called para and asked them what ammo they used to test fire with and they told me winchester white box. I told them that is what I was using and they related that I could send it back-again, at my expense. A friend of mine in denver said he would give me 500.00 for it the way it was. He corrected it by tuning the extractor and changing the recoil spring out. It runs great but I will never own another para.
  24. I have had problems with the cbc brass and I don't touch the military stuff. When loading up for a match where the rounds will be chronographed I use either new brass or brass with the same headstamp so I don't have a large variation in power factor.
  25. I have a sdb set up in 45acp, a sdb set up in 40 S&W, and a 650 set up for 38sc. I use my 650 a lot but I still love the square deals, for the money they are a great little machine. My brother has a 1050 but he also loads a ton of rifle rounds and I don't. I never have to change my caliber out as I only load those 3 rounds. I think the 650 is the bomb as far as price and the product. I sent one of my sdb back to dillon because I screwed it up and they sent it back to me in a couple of weeks completely overhauled. Their the best-period
