  1. I'd forgive ya, I love brats!
  2. Semantics aside - it's best not to do that practice at all -- Just remember that 1911s have a failure mode that allows the sear to unset slightly so that removal of the safety will allow the hammer to fall without touching the trigger. All this is is a slightly worn lug on the safety and this will happen. Remind yourself where that barrel is pointed before you do that next time. I do practice the "laser" rule, but wow, now I'm considering just getting rid of the 1911 if all it takes is a slightly worn safety lug to fire without touching the trigger. I did not know that, good to know, thanks.
  3. " A holstered gun if loaded must be on safe if a safety is available, ie. XD and Glock etc. do not have a safety except for that little trigger thingie. Other guns are hammer down DA first shot. " XD's do have a grip safety like a 1911 : ) I shoot a limted XD and sometimes my Trojan 1911 - When I make ready with the Trojan I rack it, put the safety on, slide it down into the holster then make certain that I did not knock the safety off while holstering, by clicking it off then back on so that I'm sure it's on before I let go. So it seems I'd better not do that at some matches! This was an interesting thread to read, the semantics of language really come into play.
  4. I just "torture tested" my 930 that has the non-ported barrel that I was lucky enough to have gotten from etna while she was there. I went and shot a 100 shell clays course (14 stations with 2 throwers each, some rabbits) and SHARED my gun with my wife's uncle. So over 200 shells went thru it without a hitch and it was 91 degrees and humid. I didn't clean it and a buddy wanted to try it out. He shot another 35 shells, all good. We were using some cheap #8 WalMart stuff and some 7.5 Winchester super-heavy target mixed in. This thing is a crocodile- eats anything and keeps going. Edited for typos
  5. Three Advil every 6-8 hours!
  6. A buddy just showed me a scope that blew me away for the price- it was a Nikon 2-8 power with a .223 bullet-drop-compensator. Seems as clear as my NightForce 2.5-10. It was $345 ! If I was building another AR I'd get that sucker on it!
  7. 18.5": 2692 avg with Hornady Superformance 168 grainers, 2550 avg with 175 grain hand loads.
  8. Yeah, let's just call them PC or non-PC. I like practicing head-shots too.
  9. Sweet. I have a very similar build: DPMS upper & lower, JP trigger group, Fulton Armory bolt carrier group and Fulton (Krieger) 18.5" light barrel, JP brake/comp, Rock River gas block. You can't see it in this picture, but there is a good 1/4" gap between the gas block and the end of the hand guard. I remember looking at the gas tube in the upper and it seems short but this thing gives me no issues at all, about 2500 rounds thru it. Nice tight chamber though, brass cannot be long, must fit the gauge to run well. Which length/weight barrel is that?
  10. I was able to easily install a DP no-gap ICE on my Trojan .45 and I had never even owned a 1911 before I got it. You'll have no problem.
  11. I think my new postperson just hates me, not withstanding any lead deliveries. I had a network adapter shipped to me, the status on the USPS site said "delivered". Never was. I called the office, they confirmed "new carrier started that day, ask her.". So I see her on Saturday and ask about my package. No eye contact, just "call the office". So I say "I did call them, they told me to ask you". Silence, not any suggestions or anything. Great- shipper did not use insurance, their bad, I filed a claim with Amazon and they paid. Now when I buy I specify "do not send USPS, can't trust them anymore".
  12. Ah, just shot my LR-308 again from 600 and 800 yards... fun! 5.5 and 10 inch groups. Doh!

  13. I don't know of a standard AR load. Like the other people say, check as many different loads as you can, see what groups well. My 18.5" Fulton Armory 1 in 10 barrel does the best with 168 to 180 grain bullets, the Hornady, Nosler Custom Comp and Sierra HPBT's, A-Max's all group tightly. MY standard load for it is: Hornady 168 HPBTs, 42 gr of Accurate 2520, CCI large rifle primers- for 3-gun matches any brass I have. For 600-800 yard fun I use Lapua brass (just got 100 count boxes for $62 at MidwayUSA!) These fly right about 2450-2475 fps. Sounds slow but it's very accurate. I just tried a box of the new Hornady SUPERFORMANCE 168 A-Max last night- WOW They chrono'd at 2700 fps and above out of the same 18.5" barrel! The brass was beat up pretty good though- gouged on the base and has big deflector dents. Grouped excellently 8 shot group all touching at 100Y.
  14. Glad to hear that the shooter took it well. I saw a young kid do the same at a 3-gun and him and his dad acted like we were a bunch of scared wusses- because his son had "just joined the Army and they don't have a 180 rule". The RO let them know that the rest of us weren't in the Army (at least not right then) and this wasn't a "live fire exercise".
  15. Just called, they are closed today. I'll give them a ring tomorrow. Just to be specific it's a non ported 24" ribbed barrel with tubes that you aquired? Do you mind if I ask how much it was? David's clamp fix may be the cheap way out :-) Thanks for your time. No problem, yes, non-ported, 24" vent ribbed with fiber optic "bead" sights (red/green). No mag tube included, just get a Nordic. $160.
  16. Mossberg does offer a non-ported 24" now, you can call their customer service and order one. I got mine from them and it's great- good quality.
  17. STUPID STUPID STUPID! ! ! Is what I tell myself everytime I remember the Marlin Camp Carbine in .45ACP that I had and sold. One of the most fun guns EVER.
  18. Just curious, does the gen 4 still bulge the brass ?
  19. I've only been to 10 3-gun matches (like Ft. Benning twice, Blue Ridge Mtn, Area-6, and some local). But I have shot duck with my dad since I was a kid (not for a few years now, as he's 87). I actually noticed, and said "hmm", that I'd seen many folks having issues with their Benellis and FN-USA's. So I don't own one of those because of what I'd seen. That was what made me try the 930 and I've never looked back- had it 3 years, shot thousands of rounds, no problems. The stock angle is adjustable, the fit and finish are smooth. The accuracy is good with slugs, the choke adjustable. It's tapped if you want a ghost ring, has a big button, is easy to re-load.
  20. I think you're trying to steer us away from it 'cuz it's so good! I thought the opposite of each of your points below- plus I couldn't believe the clarity for the $, it's so bright and clear. Made me think "wow, spent all that money on that NightForce for my LR-308, could've gotten another of these and a few cases of ammo..."
  21. I had shot my Grendel out to 600 yds a few times, but this weekend I got to shoot out to 800 yards with my LR-308/Fulton Armory .308 Frankengun. It makes 5-leaf clovers at 100 yds with 168 gr Hornady's so I knew it was a goodie- but I'd only used it out to 200 yds, where it was zeroed. Time to qualify for "open shooting" at the range. So I go to biggame . com and get my dope after chronoing a batch. Wow, 240 inches of drop at 800 yds (F/A 18.5 barrel, 168 grain HPBT's going 2480). Sat AM is cool and just a little tailwind. I dial in my 8.32 MIL of elevation (83 clicks on my 1/10-MIL-click 10x Nightforce). using a bipod and squeeze bag under my grip, exhale, fire. Spotter radios back "20 inches high, 16 inches right". (had a decent tailwind kind of from the left by the time it was my turn) Make one adjustment. "four inches over X, 12:00". Guys with bolt guns were like "hmm, pretty decent gas gun". Then it's open shooting time. I go back to 600 yards and shoot a 5.5" group. These rounds weren't even trickled. FUN. I'll be back. With new Lapua brass and trickled rounds...
