  1. First, congrats on your new blaster. The thread title states that you're going to use this for USPSA but it sounds like you might shoot IDPA also? For IDPA I like the Comp-tac locking paddle holster www.comp-tac.com and the California Competiton Works 45acp moonclip holders. You could use both these items for USPSA as well.
  2. A lot of K frame love here. Makes me want to give mine another chance. Well, not now, maybe later. Here's a pic I snapped with my cell phone.
  3. My 4" 686 with SDM fiber front sight, LPA rear sight and Hogue cocobolo sq butt conversion grips weighs 41.4 oz empty. I like living on the edge too.
  4. Thanks for all the good info. Looks like I'll be sticking to my own guns and not getting paid.
  5. Well, I do carry a 686, when I carry a revolver. It's a 7 shooter though, which is not legal for IDPA. What was the round count at that match? My hand tingles just thinking about shooting a box of 158 mag loads in a 66 snub.
  6. I'm curious about other SSR shooters guns. The max weight for SSR is 42oz empty. Do you like to be close to the max, as light as possible or somewhere in between? Square or round butt? K frame, L frame, N frame? Colt or other makers gun? I tried K frames but they're too small for me and my paws get in the way no matter how I run my reload. Never tried an N frame for anything but ESR. The best balance for me has been with a 4" L frame and it's pretty close to the max legal weight. I also prefer the square butt grip shape over the round becuase I've had less tendency to grab the gun low. Even my round butt guns have square butt conversion grips on them. Gary :popcorn1:
  7. Arrrrghhhhh I knew there would be some reason not to do this. I hadn't considered the liability aspect of this. Guess I'll just have to pay myself for fixing my own guns. Won't be very profitable though.
  8. Mark, is that how your make your gun run so fast? Get liqoured up while you work on it? I'm not looking at the FFL thing just yet. I was thinking about starting small and just doing local folks guns and seeing how it went. I'm poretty sure I'd need more tools. Keep the info and ideas coming guys. Gary
  9. After shooting wheelguns in competition and doing it on a very tiny budget, I've got a pretty good handle on the basics of tuning a S&W revolver. I've wrenched on J, K, L and N frames for myself and for a few close friends and have had good results. I enjoy working on Smiths and wonder if doing it could actually be putting groceries on the table. How do I get started? :popcorn1: Thanks in advance, Gary
  10. In my previous post, I was assuming it was a 586/686. I just realized you didn't state the model number. If it's a fixed sight gun then I've seen clean used 581, 681's for under $400 at recent gun shows.
  11. I carry an old cleaning rod with a 22lr casing stuck on the end. Slide it down the barrel, whack it a few times and there it is. Cost me ZERO DOLLARS. Everyone has old cleaning rods or sections of rods laying around.
  12. Thanks for the offer but I really want the hard chrome one.
  13. Hard to say without seeing it or knowing the market where you live. I'd say somewhere in the $450-$550 range if it doesn't have the internal lock. A little less if it does.
  14. I posted this in the classified area but figured asking here is probably better. I am looking for a flash chrome serrated trigger. Preferably a .400" one. Anybody have one they'd part with? Thanks, Gary
  15. I had a chance to shoot some 45GAP ammo today in a 625 and while the cases weren't as tight as 45acp in the same moonclips, they were tight enough. I was throwing the loaded moonclips from a pretty good distance and they were going right in the cylinder with no problems. Gary
  16. Magnum loads in a k frame snubby, that's a handful. I'm glad to hear your hands are feeling better, hope you can still say that after your magnum match. Thanks for the kind words. All I can say is that you haven't seen Curt Nichols shoot (look for him at Badlands). He might as well smack my upside the melon with his k frame because whatching him makes me dizzy. That guy is smokin' fast.
  17. Very interesting thoughts, folks. Keep it coming. "doing the impossible" sounds pretty good. Although, sometimes "atempting" the impossible don't turn out so good. I just can't put my finger on IT. I used to really get a kick out of my 1911's, Heck, even Glocks and Sigs were fun. Now they're all completely in the shadow of the round things. Gary
  18. A question I've been pondering... I've shot all divisions in IDPA (started w/ CDP) and enjoyed them all. For some reason, I cannot stay away from SSR. Sunday evening, I thought I'd pull out the single stack and shoot CDP at a local club match. I was actually pretty excited about it until I got the gun in my hand. After a few moments staring at it and working the action, I put it right back in the safe, grabbed my SSR stuff and went to the match. Three out of 5 stages had me doing 2 reloads to everyone elses 1 reload. Not once did it occur to me that I should've brought a different gun. My 686 and I had a ball and I smiled all the way home. So, what is it that makes the round gun so attractive? It's a bulky, heavy, limited capacity chunk of metal with a long trigger pull. But, I adore it. Am I looney tunes? Gary
  19. I've had good luck with the wolff reduced pwr mainspring and the 14# rebound spring. I also clip a couple of coils of of the cylinder latch return spring and polish the internal bearing surfaces. I don't shorten the strain screw. My Carry gun (686+) has the above mentioned spring combo and sets off cci, win, etc. My Lyman trigger pull gauge says the DA pull is just under 8 lbs. Feels good to me too. Gary
  20. I like how the other guys just stood there and whatched him fly rearward. I almost could hear one of them say, "Dude, stop screwing around."
  21. Blazer Brazz 230gr fmj is basically not crimped at all. It's a wonder to me that the semi-auto shooters don't have bullet setback problems. A friend of mine has about 2k rounds of it and he wondered why his Kimber wouldn't run. I put a Taper Crimp on all his Blazer Brass ammo. Now his gun runs 100%. Now for my own 45acp loads, I also use a taper crimp. Four different 45acp wheelguns and not one round has ever tried to jump the crimp. Get your press and components for reloading as soon as you can. Prices are going up on a monthly, if not weekly basis. Gary
  22. I've been wearing the same blue faced black plastic Navy Seals model for 4 years. I've put 2 batteries in it, that's it. It's a tough timepiece.
